Why So Blu reviews Elvira's Haunted Hills: Elvira’s Haunted Hills – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review) at Why So Blu?
Well, my October is f'd... in a first world problem kind of way. The last Scream Factory e-mail suggested an even further delay in shipping for the Halloween movies as they're still waiting on all the items for those of us who ordered the vinyl/poster set. As I said in a previous post, during every October since 1995 I've watched the entire Halloween series in order. I guess I'll start watching them in reverse order, since by the time the new ones arrive October will be at least halfway over.
^ I'm thinking everything is delayed, since I'm still waiting on a shipping confirmation for Deadly Friend direct from Shout Factory. Street date is Tuesday. There was a time they used to ship things two weeks early. I remember a few years ago they released the Night Of The Demons 4K remaster steelbook during October, but didn't ship it until November.
My record store got the rest of the Halloween 4k movies so I got the 1st 2 movies. They also got alone in the dark finally and Elvira's film sequel. No Deadly friend yet so it may be after street date. They did get killer party early though.
Halloween 2 UHD caps: https://caps-a-holic.com/c_list.php?c=6121 The UHD disc seems to have a bit of DNR applied. 4K should have sharper grain, not less. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=16155&d2=16569&s1=172197&s2=179080&i=5&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=16155&d2=16569&s1=172186&s2=179076&i=1&l=0 I'll think I'll skip the UHD:s. There is so many movies released these coming months, that I don't already own, that I rather buy.
It looks like the images are switched from caps-a-holic and hifi digest, at least in the fire walk. On Hifi digest is seemed much sharper on the new scan , and on caps they looked opposite. That being said I'm still on the fence if I want to splurge 1900 Nok. on films I've seen a million times with "possible" upgrades in in image quality, and nothing I already have.
Yeah, I'm starting to feel this way about a lot of re-releases now. I've upgraded these movies so many times now (multiple releases on every damn format), it's not that exciting anymore. If the Blu-Ray's looked like crap, then I wouldn't hesitate. But it's just not the same major leaps in PQ, as when we went from VHS to LD, to DVD and again to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray. And HDR/Dolby Vision, just isn't enough, as it can be very hit or miss, on older 16/35mm movies. I'm gonna focus on upgrading movies, that REALLY have a big noticeable jump in quality to UHD, without zooming in and doing A-B comparisons, to see the difference.
I I'm pretty much the same as you, for me I'm happy with Blu, yes there is a difference with UHD but it's not massive, I don't think it's worth buying collection over again, but in some instances it is worth the upgrade. (I sold my original Arrow Demons release and brought their remastered UHD & Blu Ray pack, definitely worth the upgrade). But I'm happy these have got releases, it's good to see UHD titles getting out there, if it's good for consumers then great, and if they are successful for the company that they invest in more titles showing up on the format and more money to invest into never released titles (or titles that have never had blu ray release), then I'm all for them.
I JUST received an e-mail that the Halloween set (with posters and vinyl) has shipped! Only a label has been created so far, but that's great news. I was afraid it wouldn't arrive until much later in the month.
The next time I see DNR or "edge enhancement" will be the first. I don't know what it is, don't want to know either 'cuz I'm afraid once I see it I won't be able to unsee it.
I know what it looks like, but I have to wonder how many people think something has edge enhancement when they may really just have their contrast/sharpness settings up too high.
Deadly Friend arrived today. I guess I got spoiled with the hard cases Elvira and the Halloween series came in, as I was expecting more of the same, but Deadly Friend came with a traditional, thin slipcover. I assumed SF changed their quality for all releases, but such is not the case. This isn't a complaint, I just wasn't sure if they'd made a permanent switch or not.
