The trailer made me want to see this... The Taint I just can't figure if it will be awesome or Troma-tastic (not a fan of Troma). Has anyone seen it?
Drew Bolduc (director/star of The Taint) actually sent me a screener to review for my site. This movie is fucking bananas. I suck at reviewing, but here's my review if anyone wants to see it: http://the-manchester-morgue.blogspot.com/2010/12/taint-movie-review.html Even if you hate it, you'll think about it for weeks and tell everyone you know about it.
They put up some of the songs from the soundtrack on SoundCloud if you wanted to download them: http://soundcloud.com/user494923
I finally had the chance to watch this tonight. I'm a bit mixed. On the plus side, the filmmakers didn't pull any punches, and were quite inventive with their use of gore and effects. The effects looked fairly good. The camera work was on the good side, but not great (but some inventive shots). The acting was forgivably poor. And it didn't overstay its welcome, at only 66 minutes before the credits rolled. On the negative side, the story, characters, costumes, locations, and style were all very haphazard, and really didn't contribute towards a coherent narrative (visual or otherwise). Some jokes were included at the expense of the narrative - they didn't really fit, and certainly didn't help maintain a suspension of disbelief, but were crammed in anyways. It was bit better than most Troma films, but nowhere near as good as say, Bad Taste. The movie it reminded me of the most was Shatter Dead, but maybe not as good. I might watch it again to hear the commentary, but I doubt I'll come back to it again after that.
The directors of The Taint have put the full movie up on Vimeo to watch for free, but only for 4 more days. I already own the DVD/VHS and can recommend as psychotically brilliant and deranged comedy/horror. http://vimeo.com/18612484
I'm glad it was available as a free download as I had wanted to see this and I would have been pissed if I had paid money to watch it. It seemed like the type of movie I would have liked when I was younger and, to me, felt like something that a middle school aged kid with technical abiltiy would have made. The jokes were very juvenile and got stale very quickly for me. The gore and filming were well done and the acting is what is to be expected. It just became tough for me to stay with when it was just an hour long penis joke.
Appropriately, it looks like Troma grabbed this one and are putting it out in March. I haven't seen it, but the trailer definitely has me interested. Hmmm....I don't remember if I enjoyed this enough to warrant a BD upgrade. I might have to watch it again.
