Hey Everyone, To those that got this I am wondering 1 thing, Shout said they restored the entire audio but the film start song(Dead Beat Dance) is this is fact true, has everything else been restored? the reason I ask is I already fixed this for a previous release, all of the errors, and it is DTS-HD MA 5.1, so if this is the case it would be very easy for me to restore this little section and have in sync for this new release. Thanks
Hey Vidjunkie, This isn't true... to a degree. The theatrical mix is only presented in 2.0 Mono, whereas it does have a 5.1/2.0 stereo track, however, those are from the MGM releases. They didn't so much restore the audio as they did use the pre-existing mono track, and replace the one song. Since this is something you're thinking of tackling, there's been a known issue for me as a fan that I'd like to see fixed as well. When the zombies are trying to break into the mortuary and "Surfin' Dead" is playing, in the VHS/Laserdisc/Theatrical release, right before they go into the chapel you can hear Spider say "Where else can they get in here?" That's when Burt yells, "The windows in the chapel!". The recent Second Sight Blu Ray, plus this release as well, that present the original theatrical tracks have that line almost muted for some reason. It's even like that on the 2.0 and 5.1 mixes, even though if you turn on the subtitles - it shows the line. Since these releases are made for purists, I just thought I'd let you know about that.
Yes it is. You can sort of hear it but compared to the VHS/Laserdisc releases, it's almost inaudible.
So if I understand you correctly the original theatrical audio is only 2.0? like I said I already fixed the audio but now I need to see if I did that spot you mentioned, need to dig out my old files lol.
Yes, it is only available as a 2.0 Mono track. It sounds a lot like the one Second Sight used, being that the line is missing from both. The only difference is the song being replaced, everything else sounds the same.
Well lol I do not care for the 2.0 I want theatrical DTS-HD MA 5.1, so I will look into checking that line you mentioned and if needed fix that and then sync this bitch the SHOUT's version.
Holy shit! The Shout disc is WAY sharper. The UK disc almost looks like a DVD in comparison Guess it's time to finally upgrade my old DVD.
The uptick in PQ on the Shout version is undeniably better. The only thing that mars this release is the quality of the workprint.
As long as everyone else have to be the buying guinea pigs, I guess I don't really care how many Blu-ray releases Return of the Living Dead gets and how many different edits are eventually made to the audio to reconstruct the soundtrack as close to its original form as possible. Though I'm still not buying any of these BR's, so... this is all on someone else's dime.
