    Another double-feature evening!

Leviathan (1989) First-time viewing, and I thoroughly enjoyed it: the characters were funny and well-rounded, the underwater sequences were well-paced, allowing the dread to creep and creep, and Amanda Pays was easy on the eyes. Plus, it's always great to see Stan Winston creature effects.

Shadow of the Vampire (2000) This one, however, didn't hold up to my memory of it. Not sure what was wrong--Dafoe's transformation is incredible--but much of the film left me wanting something more. Didn't connect with me as much as it originally had.

    The Velvet Vampire (1971) 3/10 **

Young couple Lee and Susan accept the invitation of a mysterious woman to visit her secluded desert estate. A little too swingin' 60's for my taste. Majority of the film is just three characters, neither of which are likable or interesting. Most of the time is spent watching a married douchebag trying to hook up the lady vampire while his wife (of 2 years) is standing/sitting right next to him. His young wife is mildly annoyed by this but not enough to confront him. It's quite strange and takes up most of the screen time. There is plenty of nudity but unfortunately there is little gore and ending is weak.

    Time Walker (1982) 4/10 **

An alien entombed as a mummy is reanimated and terrorizes a college campus. I found myself entertained for the entirety of the film. It kinda has a NIGHT OF THE CREEPS vibe minus the gore and Tom Atkins. The cast and premise are engaging but unfortunately the ending is horrendous. It's insulting to the point that I reflected on the entire film and realized that there wasn't one scene that really stood out. Even worse, the alien doesn't want to hurt anyone on purpose. This might have been okay if they would have used this fact to make a compelling finale. Well, they didn't so it only ends up making for a crappy horror (or non-horror) film.

    Grotesque (1988) 6/10 **

A gang of crazed punkers breaks into a family's vacation home in the mountains and slaughters everyone. This one seems to be getting some heavy criticism so I prepared for the worst but I really enjoyed it. There were some enjoyable kills and its always a treat seeing Linda Blair in an entertaining film. The gang of "punkers" sets a new level for over-the-top so I can see how that turns some people off. The film is so consistently over-the-top that I thought it fit and made the film very entertaining. Even better, the film really shocked me about 60 minutes in when the story takes a turn. That said, I don't know what to think of the finale. It's not what I would have liked, but considering the film is kinda batshit crazy it wasn't completely off base. Either way the final 5 minutes didn't ruin the film for me.

    Movie Total = 59
    TV Episode/ Documentary Total = 23

Arachnophobia (1990) - This movie opens with a helicopter shot sweeping across an island as an epic score plays. It almost makes you think you accidentally through in a Jurassic park sequel, not a B movie about spiders. That's the thing, this movie surprisingly takes itself very seriously for most of its running time. Other then when Dan Goodman is on screen with the quirky music behind him and his comedic one liners which are a highlight of the film I might add. It actually feels more like a virus outbreak movie then a horror film. It delivers the fear that comes with the situation but unfortunately doesn't offer too many all out scares. That isn't necessarily a bad thing though, although a strange way to tackle a movie about deadly arachnids. The last 20 min. or so of the movie gets a little ridiculous and becomes more of what you expected. Because of this though it almost feels like two different films, like it isn't sure what it wants to be. It's all quite cheesy and reminds of the way the Jaws movies went from being A+ quality to having the shark hunt the family down, jump out of the water, and roar. Also, I should add that it could have been edited a little tighter. At just shy of 2 hours it's way too long for a movie about killer spiders.

The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973) - The franchise had become stale by this time. They tried to reinvent it by having Dracula killing hippies in the swinging 70s in the last film. This film again takes place in modern times (Well modern as when it was shot) but again tries something different to make it stand out from the pack. It feels more like a spy/ secret agent film about a cult going to destroy the world with a virus, then it does a horror film. Dracula is barely in the film, and when he is he doesn't feel like the Dracula we know and love, he feels more like a Bond film, even going as far to explain his master plan, which I might add isn't very well thought out. This is definitely not the film to show friends how amazing Lee's portrayal of Dracula is. Either way, maybe because it was so different and out there but I actually did find some enjoyment in all of this, just know going in it is more action spy then horror film.

The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) - I really enjoyed the first Hammer Frankenstein film and was glad to see this takes place right after that one, with Cushing back in the role of Dr. Frankenstein, now hiding out as Dr. Stein (Do you think he could have came up with a better disguise?). Even though the title is revenge and he even states as much in the film, no revenge really takes place. Here you actually see the good side of the Doctor as he not only takes care of most of the city including the poor, but is creating a body to help out his assistant Karl who suffers from a disease that makes one side of his body dead. I'm sure he is doing it more for the science behind it all, not necessarily for Karl, but either way he isn't set on doing wrong. The monster this time around doesn't look as good, and attracts more of sympathy then fear, but other then that the story is very intriguing. So far these flicks are two for two and I can't wait to see what the good Doctor has in store.

Anthropophagus - Inspired to watch this one by Hellbilly's last post in this thread. Nobody was safe in this movie, pregnant women, blind girls, fetuses... I think this movie might be the only time anyone has ever said "Eat me" and meant it.

I also caught several horror TV episodes today

    The Mummy's Curse (1944) :troll::troll::troll::joshua::joshua:
Takes a big nose dive in quality from the previous entries with too many characters, too many stereotypes and too many unintentional laughs. The framework of the series is all mixed up and watered down to the point that bad guys aren't really that bad any more and good guys aren't really that good. They're just reacting by the numbers to a thread thin plot. Still, Virginia Christine is just about all I need to make it watchable.

Inferno (1980) *** An Argento favorite, with the chilling violin score, viocious death scenes and the interesting architecture-alchemy dissertations.

    10.10.2011
Hellraiser (1987) ** A bit too soap operish for my taste, but the stop motion animation is great and the cenobites are actually scary.

    11.10.2011
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) *** "Strech"... what a strange name for a DJ. One whacky horror comedy: lots of chainsaws, blood, guts, surreal imagery, gratuitous violence and a mad finale.

Opera (1987) *** A favorite, even with that strange monologue at the end.

The Prowler (1981) *** I was starting to hate this movie, with all the wandering around in the midsection, but then watching it with the Zito-Savini commentary is a blast!

Dracula (1931) ** Mmmm... liked the weird/clumsy camera movements. More enjoyable with the Phillip Glass+Kronos Quartet score.

Eyes Without A Face (1959)*** Alida Valli... what a grat actress!

Young boy becomes the victim of a prank gone wrong. Years later he returns and kills everyone involved back then.

Horror Rises from the Tomb (1973) 6/10 **

A medieval warlock is beheaded and his mistress executed. Centuries later they rise again seeking vengeance against the ancestors of their executioners. Wow, this one is crazy. This is the 11th Naschy film I've seen and it's all over the place in terms of quality and plot. It really tests the limits of your ability to forgive gore effects that don't quite work and a plot that's difficult to comprehend. But when its good, its amazing. The gore effects that do work are excellent or at least entertaining. The zombies are some of the best you'll see from this era. And who needs a coherent plot when you have Naschy's talking head in a box and gorgeous eurobabes walking around in sheer clothing or nothing at all. It's flaws are also easy to forgive because the locations, sets and wardrobe are fantastic. I expect that I will enjoy this one even more on repeated viewings.

    Scream (1981) 1/10 **

A group of friends on a rafting trip stop at an old ghost town to spend the night. I've seen more than 100 slasher films in the past two years and this might be the worst yet. It's easily the most boring. Off screen kills. No gore. No sleaze. Unseen killer. Forgettable and stupid victims. A killer that is never explained or revealed. Nothing interesting about the location. And to top that off it isn't poorly crafted in the "so bad, its good" kind of way either. By the end I wondered "what was the point?"

Terror Circus (aka The Barn of the Naked Dead) (1974) 6/10 **

Captive young girls... chained... abused... by a Madman! I found this film to be disturbing and mean. Despite the alternate title BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, it's incredibly sleazy and grimy without showing much nudity. Andrew Prine (THE CENTERFOLD GIRLS and SIMON KING OF THE WITCHES) shows once again that he is one of the best actors at playing a psychopath. His performance in the lead role is the highlight of the film. I can't say I enjoyed TERROR CIRCUS, but I was captivated by it.
