Sad news, Michael Vraney, who founded Something Weird Video, has passed away at a tragically young age after a long fight with cancer:

    Daily Grindhouse obit

Though he may never be recognized by the mainstream film archivist community, Vraney did an amazing amount of work when it came to preserving the history of exploitation cinema, rescuing countless films and in many cases restoring them to a stunningly beautiful condition. As one of the earliest entrepreneurs to specialize in releasing these works on home video, Vraney deserves a lot of credit for building the world that supports labels like Synapse, Vinegar Syndrome, Code Red and the like.

I'd been worried for awhile now as their releases have dwindled as of late and Frank Henenlotter had been taking up the reigns of what little Blu-ray stuff was put out there.

Wow, this is sad news. I own every DVD and Blu-ray release of SWV and a good chuck of their VHS's too. He was a man after my own heart and I owe a lot of my current cinematic loves to him. If it weren't for Mike Vraney, a favorite of mine like Love Goddesses of Blood Island, and countless others, never would be seen by this generation or the next.

Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Mike Vraney had done marvellous things for American exploitation cinema, and I hope Something Weird Video continues his legacy. RIP.

I discovered this man's amazing company back in the days of Blockbuster-or-nothing. I bought WIZARD OF GORE at Suncoast and continued to buy pretty much everything that Something Weird put out for quite a few years. He basically shaped my taste in movies. Thank you and RIP Mike.

I've always had high regard for Something Weird Video and all of the few times that I spoke with or dealt with Mike Vraney left me with the impression that he was a real nice guy. I really hope that he lives on through the company that he founded. RIP and thanks for the massive amount of awesome stuff that you made available to us!
