My girlfriend is willing to watch horror movies, but I'm having trouble thinking of some that she might like.

She likes strong female characters that kick ass, but doesn't like much blood or sex. She liked Silence of the Lambs and Kiss the Girls. She didn't like Frailty at all.

She turned off the first episode of American Horror Story during the opening credits because the visuals were too grotesque/scary.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

She might like THE CONJURING/INSIDIOUS flicks. Can she handle older movies (60s/70s/80s)? I know a lot of people are turned off by that.

I'll have to look into the Conjuring. She didn't like the look of Insidious. I'm not sure about older movies - she tends to like modern stuff, but if it's good it might not matter.

If she hasn't already seen Alien there's a really good chance she'll like it (I'm guessing).

    Thanks! Keep 'em coming!

Like some else said already the Scream series is a good start. Maybe even I Know What You Did Last Summer could be good.

    Some more:

    Hard Candy
    Resident Evil series
    Urban Legends
    The Craft
    Nightmare on Elm Street
    Suspiria
    Carrie
    The Birds
    Rosemary’s Baby
    Species

Just stay away from À l'intérieur. She's NOT gonna like that one. She'll probably even leave you. :p

    Some good suggestions, thanks!

I'm not sure she likes found footage films. She might like the Shining (I'll have to listen more when she's talking :) - she showed me Room 234, and it was her second time watching it. She does like documentaries quite a bit.

Suspiria, The Descent and Resident Evil may be too bloody, but I'll see, and the Others may be perfect.

And I'll avoid Inside... Call it instinct or male intuition, but I also already crossed Martyrs and Cannibal Holocaust off the list :)

Based on Silence Of The Lambs and Kiss The Girls, Sam Raimi's The Gift might a good suggestion? Copycat is another good movie in the same vein that isn't overly violent. The recent film The Call with Halle Berry might be another that she'd enjoy.

From what's been mentioned so far, I'd think Scream seems like a strong pick.

Also, if she's looking for something female driven, what about something like Ginger Snaps or Jennifer's Body? On the other hand though, if she thought the opening of American Horror Story was too much, she's probably not going to enjoy the opening credits of Ginger Snaps. If you can ease her past those though, she might really like it.

Instead of delving into heavy subversive stuff right off the bat, you could always simply start with a few that are just lite, fun, and accessible (Trick 'r Treat, The Lost Boys, The Monster Squad, etc). See how she feels about those, then ease her into something like Rosemary's Baby from there.

    The Gift might be good.

She did like Alien, but not the Shining (too intense).

Thanks everyone! I've got some things to work with that might pan out :)

The Caller is also worth a try. Just remembered it when Cpt Hook mentioned "The Call".
