I've got some extra cash and I'd like to add more horror titles to my DVD/BD collection. I love slashers and Italian giallos such as Torso, Deep Red, and The New York Ripper. I also love films dealing with the supernatural, but zombie films aren't my thing. Getting back to slashers, I love graphic ones filled with blood and female nudity as much as I love the slow burning ones built on suspense like Black Christmas (1974), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and Halloween (1978). Any suggestions? I really would like to add more Italian horror...

    Here's what I already have:

Based on the categories that you like and what I didn't find on your list, I have a few recommendations from my own list of favourites. You are probably familiar with at least some of them.

    Slashers:

Blood and Lace - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066848/ (perverse proto-slasher, undeservedly obscure)

Cold Prey - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808276/ (suspensful wrong turn type slasher)

    Cold Prey 2 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1188990/

High Tension - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338095/ (absolutely essential, very gory, and very suspenseful)

    Gialli:

The Fifth Cord - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067134/ (featuring the awesome Franco Nero)

Strip Nude for Your Killer - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073470/ (not the most elegant giallo, but enjoyably sleazy)

What Have You Done to Solange? - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068416/

    Supernatural horror:

Ghost Story - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082449/ (ghoulish effects and an all star cast lead by the wonderful Alice Kriege as a mysterious, dangerously unsettled seductress)

Messiah of Evil - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071396/ (spooky and stylish drive in fare)

Sole Survivor - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181012/ (a forerunner to Final Destination, less flashy, but much creepier)

Oops, I see that you already have The Collector in your list.

Not a slasher, but another recommendation (since I see Death Wish 2 and Ms. 45 in your collection) would be Anchor Bay's Special Edition of Class of 1984 (1982), which can be found for pretty cheap.

Ditto on Superstition. It was the first thing that popped into my head and then I saw it wasn't on your list. If you can, grab the widescreen rip of The Boogens floating around the internet too, it's good fun.

I'm also replying to this thread because I need to add some of these very recommendation to my own collection, starting with the aforementioned Superstition. :D (I have it on an old, chewed VHS.)

Unlike you I don't mind zombie films, it's the cannibal movies I hate! Ugh. Badly made up cannibals chowing down on badly made dummy innards. Fun for all!

I'd recommend Corman's Humanoids From The Deep, it's a really entertaining b-movie that gets much replay at my house. The Shout! Factory dvd is stellar too.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Lots of good suggestions. I just placed an order for StageFright, High Tension, What Have You Done To Solange?, and Strip Nude for Your Killer.

What about Thriller: A Cruel Picture? Any recommendations?

Great choices there, Billy! :) StageFright: Aquarius aka Deliria aka Bloody Bird is an enjoyable late 80's Italian take on the slasher movie. Slightly overwrought at times, but also gory and tense. I'm kinda hoping that a blu-ray will see the light of day in the not too distant future, but I don't remember it being announced.

Another late eighties entry into the slasher subgenre that I would heartily recommend if it's one you've been putting off: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095583/. It's actually pretty seedy, fairly (if not extremely) gory, and effective as a horror movie.

Oh, and if you "enjoy" I Spit on Your Grave, Last House on the Left, and New York Ripper, you might want to check out Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071650/. That movie has plenty of gore and nudity.

Thriller is worth checking out, but I wouldn't say it is essential. It is a little too long, and it takes a while to get going. Definitely not in the same league as Last House or I Spit On Your Grave. It is still a solid buy though, for both the film and the content of the disc.

I'm not sure how sleazy you are willing to go, but I recall there being insert shots of actual penetration in this one. So be prepared for that if you decide to check it out.

Also, if you've never seen StageFright or High Tension before, let us know what you think of them after you check 'em out.

From looking at your collection, I think you're going to like them.

Have you ever checked out Fulci's Cat in the Brain? It's a hard one to precisely categorize, or at least for me it is, but if you enjoy Fulci you might dig this one. While I'm on Fulci, how about Murder Rock? It had a bunch of other names it went under, my favorite being Slashdance. It's basically a giallo that capitalizes on the dance movie craze of the early 80's.

Great recommendations everyone. I LOVE High Tension. When I first watched it I was a little disappointed
with the twist ending, but now I much prefer Marie being the killer. The closing shot with Marie looking in the two-way mirror and suddenly reaching out for Alex creeped me out. To me, that was far scarier than having Philippe Nahon as the killer, although the movie would still have been excellent that way too. But knowing that Marie was *that* bat shit crazy was creepy as hell.
This is how to do a great horror film. Everything was excellent. The actors, the locations, the suspense... I purchased the Unrated Widescreen DVD, but the Blu-ray is next on my list.

I really enjoyed StageFright and What Have You Done to Solange? too. I haven't finished Strip Nude for Your Killer yet, but I'm impressed so far.

Thriller: A Cruel Picture started out good, but the slow-motion death scenes at the end really hurt it, imo. Why they thought that was a good idea, I don't know. Still, Christina Lindberg was gorgeous and seeing her completely nude was a delight.

Check out Ravenous for a damn good cannibal movie. It's not choke-full of blood or nudity, but has the most realistic cannibal(s) ever seen and is twisted as all fuck. Great fun, seriously needs a blu-ray! Much scarier when an average looking dude wants to eat you, not someone's Zulu nightmare wearing bones!:D

Glad you enjoyed the recommendations! Haute Tension is an absolute favourite of mine too. I love the twist.

Regarding Strip Nude, it definitely isn't as technically accomplished as, say, Solange, or Argento's gialli, but it compensates with a sleazy sense of humour.

I would definitely second recommendations of Madman, Just Before Dawn, and Hell Night - slasher classics!

Doesn't she have a girl/girl scene in the Japanese sleaze classic Sex and Fury?

This movie has topless women, samurai swords, and arterial blood sprays. All at once!

Christina also dresses as a topless cowgirl and whips a naked woman while a bunch of nuns watch.

It's what I imagine heaven to be like.

If you enjoyed High Tension, then I might suggest Eden Lake (2008) and Them (2006).

A lot of good choices mentioned so far. I would add,

A Blade in the Dark / Macabre Double Feature - two fun giallos Directed by Lamberto Bava

Inside - If you liked Haute Tension you will probably like this. Full of tension and gore.

    A Lizard in a Woman's Skin - A trippy Fulci giallo
