Phobia has some interesting credits - co-written by Hammer stalwart Jimmy Sangster, story by Ronald Shusett and Gary Sherman. Best of all it is directed by one of the greatest American directors, John Huston, when he was 74! That would be like Scorsese or Speilberg making a cheap slasher movie now.
Bo Hopkins passed today. I watched Tentacles yesterday. Apparently Kino used an older master supplied by MGM, probably the same one Scream Factory used for their Tentacles/Reptilicus double feature in 2015. For what it's worth, I thought it looked quite good. Now as for the movie... A giant octopus is an excellent candidate for a movie monster - alien appearance, arms that extend its reach beyond its aquatic confines, and a powerful beak. Pitted against the charismatic Bo Hopkins and the formidable Shelly Winters, and there's no reason why this shouldn't work. But it kinda doesn't, and the culprits are baffling musical cues and weird stylistic freeze frames, not to mention the obvious technical challenge having the actors convincingly occupy the same space as the prop octopus. It's in the category of 'I wanted to like it', and I hope to revisit it in a more forgiving state of mind, but as far as corny, cash-ins of Jaws go, I find more satisfaction in Up from the Depths and Monster Shark. Oh, and there has to be some region where they can sneak out a release of L'ultimo squalo.
RIP Bo Not to hijack, but have you seen Killer Fish? There's a blu-ray from Scorpion / Kino. I really love that one. The cast is fantastic. That said, it's kind of a '70s heist movie first and a piranha movie second. But when the killer fish do come into play, I was completely invested in these characters.
I enjoy this film, very much. However, I absolutely LOVE the Mystery Science Theater 3,000 version that I watch on Netflix. Awesome.
I believe I saw it as a kid. When the Blu-ray came out, I passed on it because I read that it was cut. It is an excellent cast of genre familiars, though!
If you have the means it has been released in Germany on blu ray and it's uncut, I have the disc and can confirm the footage is there, fun little movie, anyway here's a link. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Killer-Fis...words=Killer+fish&qid=1653809483&s=dvd&sr=1-9 I really like this sleeve as well.
