Can anyone recommend any essential Jess Franco film? I've been curious to see something he has made - but I keep passing up renting one of his films. For those of you who are huge Jess Franco fans - what's would be his best...in your opinion?
Franco. it's a love/hate relationship. for me...it's more love than hate. at the bottom is a cool site about Franco. I'll list the fav's from my personal library...not really in any order. the first 2 titles may be good start-up dvds. Vampyros Lesbos Female Vampire The Awful Dr. Orloff The Diabolical Dr. Z Eugenie...The Story of Her Journey Into Perversion Marquis De Sade's Justine The Sadistic Baron von Klaus She Killed In Ecstasy A Virgin Among the Living Dead Jack The Ripper Exorcism I'm building a Franco section actually....so good timing on the thread. some great new releases are just around the corner....including Blue Undergrounds Christopher Lee Collection at the end of the month. this limited box set(7,500) includes 3 Franco titles, including: Blood of Fu Manchu, The Castle of Fu Manchu and The Bloody Judge. also...check this out.. coming soon...and it's gonna rock!!!! see HERE for more Franco.
My personal favorite is FEMALE VAMPIRE, but I would recommend starting off with VAMPYROS LESBOS or SHE KILLED IN ECSTACY.
I've only seen Female Vampire and The Awful Dr. Orloff and i thought both were pretty good. Orloff being the better of the 2, FV was ok but not that great i should give it another view though.
I've only seen a couple-- I own Exorcism, which is awesome, and I've rented the old Wizard video VHS's of Virgin Among the Living Dead and The Revenge of the House of Usher (I think that's what it's called, anyway). I've also seen the Wizard VHS of Demoniac (another title for Exorcism) which kind of sucked since it's so different from the DVD. There are tons more of his films I am dying to see though.
I recommend "Jack The Ripper" as the best place to start with Jess Franco's films. If you don't like that one chances are you won't like any of his films, because in my opinion that is his best film.
forgot that I owned that and Exorcism. I'll add them into my list. JTR is essential if anyone is just getting into Franco.
Franco is one of my favorite directors. His best films IMO are: SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD EUGENIE DE SADE FEMALE VAMPIRE VAMPYROS LESBOS Ah I could go on...
Here is another long retired thread. I know there are at least a few other Franco fans on this site. Does anyone collect any material from his movies? I would love to see any uncommon Franco items if anyone has some. Here are some Franco books I've recently photographed.
You have a couple I don't have but I have the main library there. Both the original and redux Thrower Franco 1, Franco 2 books. I have Obsession (bought from Fred Olen Ray!) I have "Jeff Franco: The World's most Dangerous Filmmaker" "The films of Jess Franco" by Lazaro-Reboll & Olney 'The Sinister Case of Dr. Franco" the Alan Petit book The Jess Franco Files vol. 1 & The "Bizarre Sinema" Franco book...
Do you happen to collect any other Franco besides movies? I've got a quite a few posters and lobby cards. Here are some of my recent Italian Photobustas. Also picked up a complete set of Sexy Sisters but haven't taken pictures yet.
I've got most of those as well, plus a few others not pictured - so when I've got time later today or this weekend, I'll post them. I've also got a whole storage bin full of original Franco posters and lobby cards.
After all these years I finally got a nice display dome and stand for my Killer Barby doll and took it out of the bag. Managed to very carefully bend the staples holding the card and push them out to keep the Franco autograph in good condition, it fits nicely in the dome too and I'm glad they didn't have a narrower one because I probably would have bought that since this one initially looked a bit big. The card also hides the spot on the foot/shoe that they missed with the paint! lol Looks great, now all I have to do is find somewhere to put it... The rubber band holding her hair appears to have dried out and broken so I'll probably try and fix that sometime soon but for now I'm just glad to have this thing out of the bag and on display.
It's a very cheap doll! lol Super light/thin plastic with imperfections on the sides, a small bit of paint missing, one leg longer than the other, and cloths that are basically electrical tape. Still though, one of my best finds!
