Another year gone; another year of watching a shit ton of horror movies. For me personally 2013 was a bit on the lackluster side, dishing up some really disappointing horror films. Now I am aware that the indie/film festival scene has mustered up some really great films with plenty of buzz about them (Cheap Thrills, The Battery, The Sacrament, etc.) and I'm looking forward to those next year. But, for now, let us reflect on our favorites from 2013.

Only good ones were Byzantium and You're Next but curse of chucky and warm bodies were fine for what they were

Cold Prey 2 isnt new - there is a 3rd one actually as well - unless you were counting US dvd release years? But it is an awesome movie - just wish I could see the 3rd one

The 3rd one is my least favorite of the series.

I feel like such a curmudgeon at age 29. I have seen a grand total of 0 of the films listed in this thread aside from Crystal Lake Memories which is a documentary.

Then again every review of modern horror movies is love/hate review straight down the line. Am I missing much?

No, not a lot. There's some enjoyable movies listed in this thread, no argument there, but I don't see any true timeless "classics". Of the ones I see listed, I'd recommend American Mary, Maniac, Sleep Tight (which is really 2011), All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (even older), Kiss of the Damned for a retro Euro vibe, that's about it. But really, you're not deprived if you don't see any of those movies immediately. Sleep Tight may be the best of this bunch, again though, it's a few years old. The making-of doc on the disc is highly recommended, as it covers all aspects of the film from concepting to shooting to post-production.

I think Kiss of the Damned and Byzantium both brought enough value to the vampire-horror subgenre that they will be looked upon fondly, not unlike Ginger Snaps in the werewolf subgenre. Classics? Who knows, since it's been less than a year.

    My list:

Kiss of the Damned (top horror film I saw in 2013)

the rest in no particular order:

    Byzantium
    Maniac
    VHS 2
    Evil Dead
    Mama
    The Conjuring
    Stoker

Still need to see the new Chucky :joshua:

I haven't seen a ton of new horror (or any genre really) this year, but my top 5 would be:

Found (Played at a lot of the same festivals as my film The Invoking. Probably the most celebrated indie horror film of the year with around 30 film festival award wins. It should be coming to home video next year.)
    The Conjuring
    Stoker
    Curse of Chucky
    Dark Skies

There were actually a lot of really good horror/home video documentaries this year that I would put on my favorites list. They are:

    Crystal Lake Memories
    Adjust Your Tracking
    Rewind This!

Stoker may be the best film of this year, but I've been hesitate about adding it here because I'm not 100% sure I would consider it a horror film, which is funny because I put Sightseers on here without thinking twice and I'm sure a lot of people would consider that a dark comedy more so than a horror film.

Secondly, is Byzantium really that good? The reason I'm intrigued by the film is because Neil Jordan is directing and he has a pretty good track record.

Byzantium is definitely worth seeing, HW. Be prepared for a very slow burn, tho.

It played at the Toronto Film Fest. I'd say it was good, definitely wasn't disappointed. It's also Directed by Alex Aja who was in attendance
