I'm going through my whole movie collection right now, I always keep horror & comedy in their own separate spots, and the other general films (classics, rom coms, Pixar/animated movies, action, etc...) in their own shelf. I wanna know y'all's opinion, would you sort these movies into your horror movie stack or "general" movie stack? Shutter Island We Need to Talk About Kevin Gremlins Red Eye Jurassic Park (& sequels) Rear Window Mulholland Dr. I know it's really only up to me, but I just wanted to know what y'all thought! (I just really like organizing my movies by genre and these kind of blur the lines between action/thrillers/suspense films)
If the only two options are horror and general, then the only film on that list I'd put in horror is Gremlins. Maybe Red Eye, too, only I've never seen it on account that the trailer I saw playing in the video store seemed to give away every single plot point and twist in the entire movie, so why bother? But on the surface it seems to conform to the general description of a Thriller. Some people have trouble with distinguishing between Horror and Thriller. I don't. In fact I'd label everything else other than JP as a Thriller and JP as either Action/Adventure or Science Fiction.
you don't think Gremlins could be considered a horror comedy? Of all the films, as maybrick said, it's the only one i would consider placing there.
Oh I totally missed Gremlins. But yeah totally a horror/comedy. The rest, def not. In terms of Rear Window, I'd even argue Hitchcock never made a horror film. His films def inspired the genre, but I don't think any of his films qualify as horror. That includes Psycho and The Birds. ~Matt
A have different sections for my Blu's, having trouble with 'Somewhere In Time' Does it go in Sci-Fi or Drama? I don't have a chick flick section
In cases of a toss-up between "Drama" and another genre, I usually side with the other genre by default. "Drama" is the broadest of all film genres, and winds up as a sort of catch-all for films that don't really fit into another, better defined, genre.
yeah b/c Shutter Island and We Need to Talk About Kevin are at least psychological dramas that walk a fine line between thriller and flat out drama. Categorizing can be so annoying sometimes haha.
Another tough one is 50/50, How would you define it? Because of the subject matter I've got it as drama but because Seth Rogen was in it I was tempted to Comedy it :eek1:
I thought about organizing by genre, looked at a few films, ran into the same problem, put that idea to bed.
I just organize mine by horror and non-horror, criterions and boxsets. It's easier when you have friends over and you want to pick a movie to watch. Nobody wants to feel like they're in fucking Blockbuster. ~Matt
I don't really sort mine anymore. I have cut down my DVD collection considerably. I have maybe 50 blus at best so I can go through them pretty quick. I have about 50 HD-DVDs, too. I used to sort by genre but never had trouble sorting...
Not horror related, but I was watching my VHS of the Canadian teen comedy Breaking All The Rules this afternoon, and the side of the case is labeled as ACTION. There are a couple of criminals trying to steal a jewel from the amusement park, but it's about as much of an action movie as Career Opportunities.

So where do you put foreign language or British horror movies? Anyway yes, I run into this all the time. Not always personally either... the classifications on websites bother me all the time. Like when websites try to describe stuff like Resident Evil, Underworld, Van Helsing, and BloodRayne as horror. Even action-horror is too generous, IMO. It's just "action with monsters that are usually in horror movies."
I have a whole sub section (a shelf each) for British horror & Foreign Language Underworld etc goes into my horror section.
