We are beyond excited to announce that our second Blu-ray and theatrical release following THE ZODIAC KILLER will be EFFECTS (1980).

Cobbled together with loose change by George Romero’s friends in Pittsburgh, EFFECTS is a mesmerizing D.I.Y. frightmare that no one talks about, but everyone should. The movie was produced by John Harrison (composer of CREEPSHOW, who also stars) and stars Joe Pilato (DAY OF THE DEAD) and Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD). Landing somewhere between Michael and Roberta Findlay’s SNUFF and a student film by John Carpenter, EFFECTS is a meta-enhanced takedown on the philosophy of horror that doubles as a sleazy and terrifying movie on its own.

AGFA is currently working on a new 4K scan of EFFECTS from our original theatrical print — the only one in existence.

Stay tuned for more info on this summer’s release of EFFECTS!

    -------
I adore Effects (also my favourite Pilato performance), it's a fantastic underseen thriller/horror flick, so this is an easy day-one purchase for me.

I have the Synapse DVD and appreciated it as a one time viewing, but doubt I'd watch it again. Might upgrade if the price is right, but it's a low priority.

Glad it's coming to blu for the fans though.

That trailer looks miles better than the DVD if I remember correctly.

The DVD looks pretty damn good if you ask me since the film was shot on 16mm and Synapse's transfer was from the original 16mm negatives. I have the AGFA Blu-ray on pre-order and am excited to see how it looks and while it is a 4K scan it happens to be of a 35mm blow-up theatrical print and not the original 16mm negatives. And that trailer is a hard judge as to quality since it's a 720p YouTube video and is obviously before any cleanup was done on the transfer since there's scratches galore typical of it being a theatrical print. I'm still hanging onto my DVD until after I check out the Blu-ray personally.

I wonder why the choice to use a blow up print and not negatives?

I think I heard/read that the negatives have since gone missing.

That's weird. Seems like in the post-digital era, you'd keep track of such things.

The Shock Waves podcast had an episode this week featuring AGFA's Joseph Ziemba (also the creator of Bleeding Skull) and Bret Berg.

They discuss Effects briefly for a few minutes starting at 01:09:23. Joseph Ziemba mentioned that the original negatives were lost years ago and that John Harrison had one print that was badly damaged and no longer playable, leaving AGFA's print as the last print known to still exist.

I noticed that Synapse's DVD advertises the transfer as "New 16:9 Anamorphic Transfer from Original Vault Materials." The language, "Original Vault Materials," makes me question whether they had the negatives or if they were working with something else (...perhaps Harrison's now damaged print?). Did Synapse ever comment specifically that they were working with the negatives?

This is very encouraging. I have it on preorder but have been hoping it would be a definitive release.

The booklet that comes with the Blu-ray states that Synapse used John Harrison's personal print of the film for their transfer, which has since been "damaged" since the Synapse DVD release. It then says the original 16mm negatives are currently lost...so it really doesn't sound like the Synapse DVD's transfer came from the 16mm negatives, but Harrison's 35mm blow-up print.

Agfa obviously used a different source. All the scratches on the Agfa captures at Beaver are not on the captures of the DVD.

During the late 1970’s in Pittsburgh an ambitious and intrepid trio of filmmakers pooled their resources together and came up with just enough money to make their first feature-length narrative film.Originally called THE MANIPULATOR, and later re-titled EFFECTS, the movie was finished but sat unreleased for nearly 25 years.

In 2005, EFFECTS was finally unveiled to movie-goers world- wide, and Red Shirt Pictures was brought on to document the movie’s long and winding road to release.

With AFTEREFFECTS: MEMORIES OF PITTSBURGH FILMMAKING, many of the film’s cast & crew re-unite to discuss not only the making of the movie but their experiences in the fledgling independent film industry in Pittsburgh in the 1970s.
