This was a bit of a festival darling last year, finally being released one week from today as a Shudder exclusive.

For six college students carpooling cross-country, a seemingly mundane blow-out is the beginning of a grueling fight for survival. They’re in the midst of changing the flat when they discover a spent slug and realize this was no accident...

Directed by Ryûhei Kitamura (The Midnight Meat Train, No One Lives).

I loved No One Lives and Midnight Meat Train, but since they were both sort of financial flops, it seems like Kitamura had to go back to basics here. This is a pretty minimalist movie, single location, small group of characters, etc. Definitely not as polished as his previous efforts.

This reminded me a lot of a movie from a few years ago called The Anniversary At Shallow Creek. I think I liked Downrange a little better (they're both pretty mean-spirited), but they're both of the same caliber. There was also a similar movie called Roadside, but that one is several notches below these two.

I didn't exactly love this movie, but I did find it very effective, engaging, and at times downright vicious. If you have Shudder, it's worth a look.
