I found this little tidbit in the trivia section on imdb:

"When originally submitted to the MPAA, the film was given an X-rating which would have relegated it to the porno circuit and severely hurt the box-office returns. Craven cut the film enough to secure an R rating, and the original director's cut is thought to be no longer in existence."

If this is true than that relieves me and angers me at the same time. It relieves me because now I know that it wasn't just me who thought the scenes were a bit jumpy and there might have been more footage. Yet it angers me because this means we'll never see this footage. So, can anybody verify this or have any comments?

  2. considering it's identical to vhs releases I'd say be happy....

no use getting pissed off about something you can't change.

Oh no, I'm perfectly content, but it does make me very curious as to what was cut out.

    (Possible Spoilers)

A few bits of the film were cut for an "R" rating and have never been seen since. Unfortunately, the original negative itself was cut (not just CRIs or internegs) and the footage was apparently trashed. We will most likely never see a longer version.

Shots that were clipped include some more glimpses of the father's severed head on the pole, and shots of the family eating human flesh during Poppa Jupe's monologue.

Not bothered at all. "Uncut" to me doesn't mean every bit of film made. The current version is the version I recall - it's what I wanted.

I believe The Last House on the Left also has this problem.

Which is really a shame because I've read about the original cut, which was shown for awhile, and it's a much better film as a whole. I think Wes Craven cut out a lot of good elements and added in a lot of bad elements for reasons I'll never fully understand, which is why he's really not the film maker for me. I just don't dig what goes on in his mind.

  9. The DVD is the version of the film that has always existed, so it's as uncut as it's ever been presented....so I have no problem with it.

No complaints about the DVD here, either. Same goes for MGM's Last House DVD, these releases are as uncut as the films wil ever be. So I'm pleased with them.I was just mighty curious about some missing footage. :D

very good film, but the uncut stuff are crap scenes that didnt work, thats what Craven says on the commentary, this guy is so boring to ear, cant imagine when he was teaching :(

No shit. See his intro to Last House on the Left? he sounds like he's ashamed he ever made the damn film. I can only imagine what a commentary would sound like.

  16. The commentary with Cunningham and Craven on Last House is actaully good, they do have a running joke that every actor in the film has since changed their name so no one knows they were in the film though
