I haven't seen either one of these 3-D movies since they were both released to theaters way, way back in 1983. They were so similar to each other that my memory has blurred them together over time into one big boxoffice craptacular. Even at 9 years old I knew they were terrible. Not even the 3-D could save them. (Well, maybe they could have had they actually used the effects to their full potential. I remember them being severely underused). The one image and character that still sticks out about either is Baal, the evil cyborg from Metalstorm that squirted acid from his mechanical arm. He was pretty cool.

I voted for Spacehunter, which had a creepy baldheaded villian with long arms ... I think. Plus it had Molly Ringwald, who I had a crush on as a teen :)

Metalstorm has better action. It had cooler 3-D effects, like the spiked balls being tossed at the camera and the chase through the space gate. I also like the Borg-like baddie named "Bal" who sprays acid from his arm. Jared-Syn is a menacing villain. The race of cyclopes, led by Richard Moll, are hilarious, with one eye obviously covered by makeup rather than placed in the center of their heads. Tons of Star Wars references within as well.

Spacehunter had good stuff too, like punky Molly and her bathing and whining, mutated Michael Ironside with his fangs and bald white head. I liked those little dwarf creatures and the squeaking sound they made. It was a beautiful but deadly planet, and those three princesses needed to be rescued badly.

I barely remember METALSTORM,but I do recall SPACEHUNTER having a strong Elmer Bernstein score,he also did a terrific score for HEAVY METAL.I'd really need to see both of these again to choose which was better.I still have the SPACEHUNTER 3-D glasses !

Metalstorm all the way, baby. I would sure love to see a 3-D flick released to theatres these days that isn't a children's movie.

Metalstorm, vastly superior and it had Tim Thomerson!

I went with Spacehunter. That was a really fun movie. Metalstorm was almost grade Z, not that there's anything wrong with that, but it left me rolling my eyes at quite a few parts of it, especially the ending. Still, I haven't seen it in years and I'd gladly watch it if it was on TV again.

I was going to post the exact thread/poll, but someone thought as I did, a few years back. ;)

Went with Spacehunter, for better production value, better story, better acting. I always liked Peter Strauss, he was great as Wolff; and Michael Ironside as the villain, well, need I say more?

I do like Metalstorm, though...lots of fun from the Brothers Band!

I watched Spacehunter about a year ago, but have never seen Metalstorm. Wish I could find a copy. I can't even find one on the torrents.

My only memory of Metalstorm is me lying facedown in a drive-in movie lot in the summer of 1983 with Moosehead beer puked all over my Police "Synchronicity" tour T-shirt. I think Psycho II was playing on the bill as well, but I can't remember what the third feature was.

Thanks again for that Youtube info. The guy who posted Metalstorm, also posted a ton of cheesy old Scifi like Megaforce and Eliminators. I'm defintely going to be going through the list. A lot of stuff I haven't seen in years, some never.

    Just an update here...

The good news is "Metalstorm" has just recently been released on DVD. The bad news is that it's full-frame! Bastards!!

Saw Spacehunter at a drive-in when I was kid. Wasn't too impressed, but I think it's more fun than Metalstorm which I had only rented on VHS. Can't compare the 3D since I didn't see either that way.
