Wow. Annabelle was the only film on that list that I saw. I haven't heard of most of those films, and I have no interest in the few that I have heard of.

I only saw Tusk, which I'm not going to claim is anywhere close to being the top of that list, but I enjoyed it for the black comedy (the parts with straight comedy not so much).

I'm game for Zombeavers. And I want to check out Horns. I've heard Dead Snow - Red vs. Dead is good too.

Knights of Badassdom is a horror movie? I guess I misunderstood when people said it was horrible.

I've seen 8 titles from the list and would not really consider them to be top notch films. I also have Dead Snow 2 on blu-ray but haven't watched it yet. There are several titles on the list that I do want to see.

I've seen 41 from the initial list, Found from Ash's list, plus a few others that haven't been mentioned. There were a few others I wanted to check out before making a list, but screw it, I'll do my top 10 now.

A lot of the best films from this year are ones that straddled the horror genre, but may not necessarily be outright horror. I'm including them anyway.

    My Top 10 Of 2014:

10.) The Sacrament - While I was a little put off by how closely this followed the Jonestown events, it's still a very effective movie that got under my skin.

9.) Zombeavers and Animal (tie) - Two extremely entertaining "teens in peril" creature features. Animal delivered two things that are extremely rare in horror these days: practical effects and likable characters. I was lucky to catch Zombeavers at a rowdy sold-out midnight screening and had a blast with it.

8.) Coherence - There were three other movies released this year with the identical plot (+1, Mine Games, and The One I Love) but Coherence is by far the best. Entirely dialogue driven, intelligent, and surprisingly tense.

7.) Cheap Thrills - Not really a horror movie, but definitely one genre fans can enjoy. Macabre, funny, and carried by a great cast. See also the similar 13 Sins, a fun take on the same idea.

6.) Cold In July - Another one that isn't exactly horror, but that genre fans will appreciate. The plot is all over the place, and character motivations make little to no sense, but it's never boring and completely engaging from beginning to end.

5.) Creep - A gem of a found-footage movie. I didn't think I was going to like it, but it ended up being my favorite of the film festival where I saw it. Mark Duplass's performance will have you laughing one moment, then seriously creeped out the next.

4.) Wolf Creek 2 - I wasn't a fan of the first movie, so I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this sequel. After a cruel and mean-spirited opening sequence, it becomes a tense and wildly over-the-top chase film in the vein of The Hitcher.

3.) Big Bad Wolves - Yet another that isn't quite horror, but that horror fans should enjoy. Very grim and darkly funny revenge film, loaded with twists and turns.

2.) The Conspiracy - The biggest surprise of the year for me. I had heard next to nothing about this film, so I had no idea what I was walking into. The final 30 minutes were easily the most tense, uncomfortable, and frightening that I've seen in a movie this year.

1.) The Guest - Once again, not quite horror, but close enough. I was very impressed with Wingard and Barrett's You're Next last year, and they may have even topped it this year. Just a shamelessly fun rollercoaster from start to finish.

    Honorable Mentions:

    - The Babadook - While it didn't quite deliver as a horror film, it was a very well done family drama. I was definitely a fan, but I'm not sure about the replay value.

    - Grand Piano and Not Safe For Work (tie) - Two fun, fast-paced, and brief little thrillers in the vein of Wes Craven's Red Eye. The cinematography in Grand Piano was especially striking.

    - Stagefright - I loved this musical slasher flick on the first viewing, but it didn't quite hold up the second time around. The Legend Of Beaver Dam short on the bonus DVD was pretty spectacular.

    - Bloodworx (aka Bloodwork) - Caught this little movie on Chiller earlier this year and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Very fun cast of likable characters who are easy to root for. Chiller airs it as Bloodwork, but it was recently released to DVD as Bloodworx.

    - Tusk - Walking out of the theater, I honestly wasn't sure how I felt about this one. But I enjoyed the awkward humor and the image of what happens to the main character is pretty hard to forget. I'm eager to give it another look.

    - Raze - Even though the ending is seriously lacking, I thought this was a very entertaining little action flick. I was lucky enough to attend the Los Angeles premiere at the New Beverly, introduced by the cast.

    Worst Of 2014:

1.) A Night In The Woods - Found-footage flick where three characters go into the woods... and absolutely nothing happens. Surprised to see Scoot McNairy in this garbage, since he's been turning up in a lot of really big movies these days.

2.) 24 Exposures - Marketed as an homage to '90s Cinemax erotic thrillers, but is basically nothing but 90 minutes of homely topless girls dancing around Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett.

3.) The Ganzfeld Haunting - So boring that I remember absolutely nothing about it except Rumer Willis dancing around in a thong.

4.) Mockingbird - Surprised that the director of the fairly effective The Strangers would stoop to this tedious found-footage flick with a lame cliched twist ending.

5.) Unidentified - Yet another chore of a found-footage film where absolutely nothing happens until the last five minutes. The characters were quite detestable.
