Latex has a finite life span. So nothing you do will make your masks last forever. But a little care goes a long way. And most of the modern indie mask makers use much higher quality latex than the stuff that was used for mass-produced masks from the 70s.

Here are a few very important tips:

1) Keep masks out of direct sunlight and in cool, dry conditions. Direct exposure to sun or heat can quickly lead to discoloration and other issues.

2) Wipe out the inside of your mask every time you take it off. Oils from your skin and moisture are very harmful to latex. Dry it off thoroughly and then lightly dust the inside with powder to keep it dry.

3) Don't fold or crush your masks. If possible store them on styrofoam heads or stands.

Here's a detailed article with additional tips:

With proper care good quality masks will last a long time. My Chewbacca is an original 1977 Don Post. And despite that fact that it's lost a little of its elasticity the latex is still in very good condition. And all of my Myers masks are still in good to excellent shape (cheesy pun intended). My two Cemetery Gate masks (Fear and Sandman edition Warlock) are not quite as soft as they once were. And they appear to have yellowed very slightly. But my Haddonfield Slasher and Nightowl Maniac are pretty much exactly the way they were when I took them out of their boxes. If you're looking for longevity Nightowl seems like a pretty safe bet.

Yea I don't think mask rotting is that big of a concern. As long as you treat them well they should last.

I made it using hi-res images from the 60's Mani-Yak tranfers, printed on iron on paper. You can also see the mock up border I was going to do using images from the 60's Don Post calendar but I still haven't finished that project!

This is my horror room I started in my basement. Didn't bother posting the home theater setup since it's so generic and looks kind of crappy right now until I can upgrade it.

Love your room Myhorror. Cool stuff

Here's a link to some of the videos I've made for my masks. I'd embed some videos in my post but I have no idea how.

Years ago I bought NECA's Chatterer bust. I've had it for awhile and not being as much of a Hellraiser fan as I am a Halloween fan, got a little bored with it so I decided to turn it into something a little different. So I basically took this:

...and turned it into this:

did you recreate that mask yourself? if so, you did a good job. shame the people making some of the masks for the sequels didn't pay quite as close attention...

The mask is the officially licensed Trick or Treat Halloween II mask. I played with the hair a little bit and also want to get it repainted because the aesthetics and accents on the mask aren't that good being that it is mass produced, but there is a great sculpt in there. I wish I could find/afford a NAG/JC H1 mask which is hands down the most perfect H1 mask ever made. This mask makes every other Myers mask made look like a dime store halloween mask. Every time I look at this mask, it makes me look at mine and want to cry.

That's hilarious Mikey Horror That Chatterer bust would have been better had they made it off the original character rather than the later sequel version. You turned it into a nice Myers bust though

For the price the TOTS mask is great but I'd also love to own a NAG/JC H1 mask one day. It's awesome.

Thanks guy!

@ baggio, The eyes really do make these pieces pop and come to life. These are easily some of my favorites in my collection. I'm hoping to have some more goodies in the next few weeks
