Lovely Molly (2011)

I thought this film was nice and creepy when I saw it last year at the Toronto Film Fest and it was probably one my favorite horror films I caught last year. Seeing that it's been released on DVD/Blu-Ray. Anyone else get a chance to check it out?

Yeah I guess It does have a Tuesday release date. I actually saw it for sale at Walmart on Tuesday. I guess they got it early.

Reading around it seems to be a pretty divisive film as evident by the ridiculous IMO 5.2 IMDB rating. If you're the type that looks for good Atmosphere, mood and tone and aren't as worried about whether or not the story connects all the dots I think you'll enjoy this one.

I really want to see it. I did spot it at Wal-Mart, but it was DVD only. Couldn't find a price, the label in front said $9.96 but it was for a different movie.

The BWP filmmakers have made consistently interesting and original horror films, and I expect the same from Lovely Molly.

Pretty bizarre about co-star Johnny Lewis.

Watched it last night and absolutely loved it. One of only a handful of modern horror flicks to successfully creep me out. Some of the scenes in this (particularly ones that take place in a basement and right at the end) are freaky as all hell, and I'm still thinking about them the next day. The lead actress, Gretchen Lodge, is excellent. Director Eduardo Sanchez is quietly turning out to be one of the best horror directors that flies under everyone's radar; certainly better than the bulk of the more high profile genre directors that seem to get all the work these days. This one is wide open to interpretation, so if you like a horror film that blurs the line between reality and fantasy and forces you to draw a conclusion or two yourself, you're likely to dig it. Definitely couldn't have asked for a better film I'd never seen before to kick off the month.

A friend of mine, the program director of the local gay/lesbian film festival said he rated it a C-, but that there was good nude scenes of the lead actress.

Should I trust his C- rating, and how weird is it that a gay man is commenting on the quality of female nudity in a film?

Person goes crazy, may be being haunted by a ghost, may be possessed, sort of horror flick. It's one that's sort of open to interpretation. If that's not up your alley, I'd say skip it, as it doesn't completely tie everything up for you in a nice, neat package. But if you're open to that sort of thing, I'd highly recommend it. It's got some incredibly creepy scenes and very solid sound design.

I wouldn't trust the C- rating or the fairly low score on IMDb. If you look through the reviews and message board there, most people that didn't like it complain about it not making sense or not tying everything up in the end. This is one of those films that's all about getting immersed in the atmosphere and mood, and if you don't buy into it, you might not like it. If you find yourself gravitating to films like that, I'd say it's worth a shot for sure.

"Making sense" is important to me, so I'll probably skip this one. There's no reason something can't be creepy and atmospheric and still make sense. That's the difference between Suspiria and Inferno for me. They're both nice to look at, but Suspiria has good characters and story, while Inferno is just random stuff happening. A movie that doesn't make narrative sense is pointless to me.

I think it make sense. It just leaves certain things to interpretation.

LOVELY MOLLY is a strange, weird, creepy film. It starts slow and builds nicely to a violent conclusion.
I would definitely recommend adding this to your October watch list.
