The music, is this an old track, or part of the original soundtrack?

Sure sounds fimiliar to me. Either from Escape from New York or They Live. I've definitly heard it before.

I'm with Rhett on this one, going into the theater blind. I did that for Ghosts of Mars and loved it, I'm doing it again.

Bizarre interview with John Carpenter about The Ward and films in general.

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/21647

Maybe Carpenter just wasn't in a great mood that day or the interviewer wasn't to his liking. The interview isn't as bad as the article led me to believe, but he certainly is/was cranky.

What did I miss? He seems fine in that interview. Weird.

Every time this thread bumps, I think it's "John Carpenter's The Wand."

I'm sure the interviewer has never experienced a director before that wasn't talking up his/her film as though it was Citizen Kane. You don't usually see the following quote from a director:

"There are a lot of jump scares in this, which some people may not like", he answered. "But tough shit."

To me, that's refreshing.

Yeah, that attitude is nothing new for Carpenter. It's disheartening in a way - you just want the guy to have a modicum of the passion he used to have for films back in the seventies and eighties, but at the same time, it is refreshing to see a guy who refuses to auto-pilot through the Hollywood PR game. Now, if there's no passion in the film itself, then that's a problem, but if it's just Carp doing the "fuck if I care, give me my cheque" routine that's he's been doing for ages, then har har.

Just saw it. Mediocre and PG. Very safe. Some jumps, though.

Yeah I agree. I'm confused on why he would wait a decade and then choose this as his comeback film. It's was just so generic. Not a very good return.

Just what we feared. Was it in scope, at least? Any strong, witty, Hawksian females? The music?

Yes it was in scope but I wouldn't say he took advantage of it. The characters and music were all very forgettable. Really I wouldn't of known it was a Carpenter film if his name wasn't above the title. It was just a series of predictable cheap jump scares. Again midnight showings are tough on me especially when I was up since 5 am so possibly I'm missing a few nuances that I wouldn't have if the film was playing earlier but to me it felt very disposable. I feel like I'm being overly tough on it as it's not terrible but after not making a film since 2001 this is what he was holding out for? To top it all off he didn't show up because of Jury duty!

Yeah, it is all about "star" power this year. Amber was so played up, yet was not the best actress in the film by far. With Hayden C in the Brad Anderson film the night before, I am convinced this year was about Midnight Madness playing it safe. The horror line up for the festival are of mediocre films that have at least one name person attached. These films are going to get distributed, anyway because they know people are going to see a new Carpenter film, just because.

Don't get me wrong, if you just have to see The Ward, you will get something out of it as a rental, not a purchase. I still found myself routing for the characters, but I just can't believe how poorly crafted some of the scenes were. And forget about graphic violence, good acting, or good dialogue.
