Just a note that the soundtrack has been officially released on CD as a limited edition of 1000.

It's a crying shame that we still have no quality DVD release of this little gem of a film! Code Red? Synapse? Shout Factory?

The fact we are getting a new CD release makes it even weirder there is no real DVD release. It's gotta be done eventually.

Kat - are you getting the CD?

Yes, I currently have it on order. I've always really enjoyed the score and the Mp3 sound samples I heard sounded great. Apparently much of the score was cut out of the finished film.

The film was released the same year (1974) as Black Christmas, but this was actually released earlier in the year. It was also filmed much earlier, in 1972. It's intriguing that the two films have several similarities in their plots. Some interesting trivia facts here.

It's depressing that it's such a solid 70's horror film...which gets better every time I see it...yet we must suffer watching it via these poor degraded transfers! I certainly hope someone gives the film the DVD release it deserves in the future.

I think I'm due for another viewing of "Zora", it's been about 2 years.

I have the Brentwood release of this and it is so dark that I could never follow what was going on on-screen. As such, I have no appreciation of the film. Since many of you seem to enjoy it, I would be willing to give it another chance if I were ever able to find a suitable copy to watch! :-)

Every time this thread gets revived it renews my interest in this. I missed watching this movie this year during the holidays. It's still pretty cold and bleak out though...maybe I will give it a spin this weekend (I still have two versions that I have never watched).

Sadly one reason the film has never gotten a quality release by a major label is that it fell into a sort of public domain hell.So many companies have released shoddy versions of it (usually culled form bad 16mm prints) that the big boys won't touch it,they feel like the money they would spend restoring it wouldn't be made back because so many crappy versions of it are available for just a couple of bucks that they think no one would be willing to pay a decent price for a good copy.

I myself would be happy to pony up for a quality disc of this ,and many other ,public domain gems.

Maybe, but then again films like Messiah of Evil got a full blown special edition DVD. There's plenty of public domain DVD versions out there of that one too.

I still think there are many people out there who would buy a quality DVD release, just from the comments seen in this thread.

If I am not mistaken, this was originally released by Cannon Films, and most of their library is now with MGM. They have released PD titles in better editions before (Bucket of Blood, Last Man on Earth)...but with all their financial issues I don't see this happening any time soon. Probably the best we can hope for is this eventually turning up on in a decent looking form on fear.net.

I wonder if Cannon/MGM still hold the rights though Eric. From everything I've heard the film somehow fell into public domain at some point years back.

Yeah, I doubt they do own the rights, I was more hopeful that perhaps somewhere in their vault lies a print that doesn't look like ass.

As I said,I'd be happy to spend the money to get a nice edition.Perhaps if MESSIAH OF EVIL sells well it might inspire some other companies to take a chance on titles like these.Still, sales are down right now,so who knows.

That's a good possibility. Hopefully if MGM does hold a good print in their vaults they won't give too much hassle licensing it out.
