2004: Track The Films You Watch

I think this thread could maybe act as a seperate entity than the "What Will you be Watching Tonight" thread. Possibly, the moderator or administrator could sticky this, since instead of making a new post every time you watch a movie, you can continually update it. Here's a disclaimer, from another site. I think both threads can co-exist peacefully.

DISCLAIMER: Please post only your list, no off-topic posts please. These only make the thread long and cluttered. Also, when you see more movies, edit your original post rather than making a new one so that we can keep the thread as short as possible.

Personally, i'm going to rank the films out of 5 stars, and every title will be in bold, not just titles I have seen for the first time. Depending on their running time, I may include documentaries. I think it would be a good idea to reserve a second spot under your name, assuming that you may run out of room.

Suggestion: Explain your reviews. Asterisks mean nothing to me.

Out of 5

1/2
Birth of a Nation(@@@)-Great domestic propaganda. Sadly, some boring parts slow it down.
Legend(@@@)-Not as great as I remembered it. Awesome visuals but overdrawn film in the end. Tim Curry steals the show as "BEST SATAN EVER!"

1/3
The Fast and the Furious(@@1/2)-Good for all the wrong reasons. Awful script saved by awesome car scenes. I'm still trying to figure out how Vin Diesel can actually save face after this.

1/4
The Longest Day(@@@@)-I had no idea the title was literal. A 3 hour widescreen B&W WW2 epic. Reminded me of Tora!Tora!Tora. The action is more intense in this one.

1/5
Lolita(@@@@)-Sexual innuendo to the extreme. At midpoint the film loses a bit of steam since the viewer knows the conclusion before hand. Other than that the film is an amusing romp through the mind of Michael Jackson...I think.

Beauty and the Beast SE[Disney](@@@1/2)-Good songs for the most part. The art is pretty crappy when it doesn't concern the main characters. Looks straight to video for some reason.

1/6
Wes Craven's New Nightmare(@@@1/2)-Great concept and awesome in design. If you take it as a supernatural thriller you should be happy. Surisingly there isn't much gore in it and only 3-4 scenes stand out (one recycled from the first movie). California rocks as they seem to give NOES 24/7 on tv.

1/10
Dodsworth(@@@@)-Moving story about a bitch getting what she deserves for being a bitch. I loved it.

1/12
Jaws(@@@@)-First time I've ever seen it in widescreen. Rocks even more. That last death scene was gross out awesomeness. Thanks Spielberg!

1/13
Terminator 3(@@1/2)-My second viewing since the theater. It's still stupid but at least it's entertaining. Arnold sold us out.

1/16
The Ghost and Mrs Muir(@@@@)-Another classic love story involving the ghost of a swarmy sailor. Too bad I saw the ending coming from a mile away.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space(@@@@)-I've never seen the whole thing. I really hope they don't screw up the sequel.
UHF(@@@1/2)-Kentucky Fried Movie is better but this one has so many memorable scenes in it. I only hope it holds up with future viewings.

1/19
Empire of the Ants(@@1/2)-Someone decided to make a giant ant movie in the late 70's using the same techniques from the early 50's. Fun but the sound effects gave me a headache.

1/23
All About Eve(@@1/2)-Good on paper, crappy in execution.
The Conqueror Worm(@@@@)-OMG! Best ending ever! "YOU TOOK HIM AWAY FROM MEEEEE!!"
Black Sabbath(@@@)-The middle story sucked. Maybe I missed something.

1/24
Treasure Planet(@@@1/2)-Better than Atlantis. The movie falls apart at the end and Martin Short just queers the whole thing up.

1/25-1/31
Singing in the Rain(@@@@)-Great dance numbers and catchy songs. I'm not into musicals but this one changed my attitudes a bit.
The Man Who Knew Too Much(@@@@)-Jimmy Stewart is great in anything he's in. Ending felt a bit rushed.
El Mariachi(@@@1/2)-Inspirational. Something feels wrong while watching it though.
Desperado(@@@@)-Excellent bullet ballet. Nice job with the recasting.
Once Upon a Time in Mexico(@@@1/2)-I must've missed the part about his hand. Fun like the other 2 but needlessly confusing.
Parents(@@1/2)-Entertaining but takes so long to get anywhere. The payoff is weak.
Assault on Precinct 13(@@@@)-Awesome. Top5 Capenter material here.

I can't keep up with this for a whole year. Lates.

I actually started doing this last year, but a bit after-the-fact so my viewing log is incomplete, sadly. But, I've done the best I could.

Viewing logs:

I stuck with it all the way for 2003, and I have the list on Microsoft Word. I'll put it on a site if you are interested.

EDIT: McChrist, here's my 2003 Track The Films You Watch: http://www.freewebs.com/2003trackfilms/

12/31 - The Long Goodbye (1974) - ****

January

1/1 - Taxi Driver (1976) (dvd) **** Still waiting to hear the Criterion commentary track.
1/2 - Deliverance (1972) (dvd) **** A film that I can watch anytime. The acting and atmosphere still hold up very well.
1/7 - X2: X-Men United (2003) (dvd) ***1/2 Much better than the original. The lack of more Kelly Hu and some groaner throwaway jokes keep this from getting all 4 stars.
1/7 - The Princess Blade (2001) (dvd) *** Yumiko Shaku and great swordplay lift this film above its formulaic roots. Gotta find the soundtrack somewhere too.
1/8 - The Fly (1986) (dvd) **** Wanna arm wrestle?
1/8 - The Fly II (1989) (dvd) *** Was the MPAA sleeping when it previewed this one? How this got away with an R rating is beyond me.
1/9 - Scanners (1981) (dvd) ** Maybe Cronenberg could have scanned some acting talent into his leads? Just a thought...from a non-scanner........
1/10 - Royal Warriors (1986) (dvd) ** Cheesy, but Michelle Yeoh saves it.
1/13 - Yes, Madam (1986) (dvd) ** Good beginning and great ending....but the middle is a chore. Did anybody else catch the stolen snippets of John Carpenter's Halloween score used here?
1/14 - Blue Velvet (1986) (dvd) *** "It's a strange world, isn't it?"
1/21 - Blood Work (2002) (dvd) **1/2 Clint Eastwood and company go through the motions again, but they do it so well that you may not mind. And who was the killer again?!
1/21 - The Two Jakes (1990) (dvd) *** Sequel to Chinatown. Harvey Keitel and Jack Nicholson chew the scenery up. Good stuff!
1/25 - Mulholland Dr (2001) (dvd) **** "A man's attitude... a man's attitude goes some ways toward how a man's life will be. Is that somethin' you agree with?"
1/26 - Memento (2000) (dvd) ***1/2 Tomorrow's tattoo: "Remember to revisit Memento in the near future."
1/26 - Four Rooms (1995) (dvd) **1/2 A very hit-or-miss affair. Although "The Misbehavers" practically steals the whole movie and brings a * 1/2 to the rating by itself.
1/26 - Night of the Living Dead (1968) (dvd) ***1/2 The final five minutes alone pack more punch than most feature-length films.
1/26 - Dawn of the Dead: Director's Cut (1978) (ld) **** The rare sequel that surpasses the original. Essential viewing.
1/27 - Sleepaway Camp (1983) (dvd) *** Trying to stay in that little fantasy world of mine, where sequels like Return to Sleepaway Camp don't exist....
1/27 - Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982) (dvd) ** How many more times can I be satisfied with watching this guilty pleasure in only 2D? Not many.
1/29 - Charlie's Angels (2000) (dvd) *** Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore.....for those times when your brain needs a rest. Try and count all the fetish costumes....I dare ya.
1/30 - Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003) (dvd) *** If you liked the original....... Oh, and the end credit outtakes set to Journey's "Anyway You Want It" are priceless!

February

2/3 - The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) (vhs) **** My favorite Miyazaki film happens to also be my favorite version of Lupin the 3rd. A timeless action classic that I can watch anytime! (Streamline dub)
2/8 - Ballistic: Ecks VS Sever (2002) (dvd) ** Actually, it's "Ecks VS Sever" for the first half of the film, then it's "Ecks and Sever Join Forces and Blow Stuff Up Real Good!" for the second half. Predictable and thankfully short. Strictly a rental.
2/8 - So Close (2002) (dvd) *** Much better than I expected! The comparisons to Charlie's Angels are wrong: this action piece is about two sister assassins and the cop on their trail...and it is more somber in tone than C.A. . The action scenes, while sparse, are very well done and memorable. And the scene at the grave got me misty-eyed....I must be getting soft in my old age.
2/8 - Hang 'Em High (1968) (dvd) *** "You made two mistakes : you hung the wrong man, and you didn't finish the job."
2/9 - Donnie Darko (2001) (dvd) *** Teen time travel angst. Still trying to make all the pieces fit on this one, although I'm not sure that is possible.
2/10 - Master of the Flying Guillotine (1975) (dvd) *** The Flying Guillotine takes on the One-Armed Boxer. Sure some of the effects are hokey (like we can see the "one"-armed boxer's good arm hidden underneath his shirt), but some of the other effects (like the arm-extending yoga master) still hold up. And the final fight scene is a must-see!
2/11 - Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) (Madstone) *** Bruce Campbell, as an ageing Elvis Presley protecting his rest home from a soul-sucking mummy, is very good here in a film that runs out of gas about 2/3 of the way through. Forget the showdown with the mummy though: this is a story that is at its best, when it touches on issues such as mortality, dignity, and regret. Ossie Davis' JFK is a perfect complement to Campbell's Presley.
2/12 - Ice Age (2002) (dvd) *** Not quite as accessible to adults as Monsters, Inc. or Toy Story, but still very enjoyable. Sometimes, predictability can be forgiven when the execution is so well-done.
2/16 - Something Wild (1986) (dvd) *** Jeff Daniels as the stuffy safe corporate robot who meets his catalyst in Melanie Griffith's wild child. Ray Liotta nearly steals the film as Griffith's psychotic ex-con husband, who is not too fond of her current choice in men.
2/17 - Returner (2002) (dvd) *** Take The Terminator, Independence Day, Trancers, Back to the Future, Escape from New York, Transformers, E.T....throw them all in a huge blender. Blend for 116 minutes and serve. Predictable, but tasty treat.
2/22 - Cowboy Bebop Marathon (2001,2003) (dvd) **** Only the strong survive: all 26 sessions AND the movie (which is technically an extended session). Marathon ran from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm. My player is still being iced.....

March

3/5 - Intruder (1988) (dvd) ** Slasher set in a supermarket. Really is a cheesy crapfest...that would feel more at home in a beat-up VHS ex-rental tape, than on dvd.
3/7 - Evil Dead Marathon (1981, 1987, 1993) (dvd) *** The entire trilogy...one right after the other. I watched the Director's Cut of Army of Darkness instead of the theatrical version. Good, groovy times!
3/8 - House of 1000 Corpses (2003) (dvd) ** My brain asked for the night off, so I obliged.
3/16 - Demons (1985) (ld) ** People are given comp. movie tickets to a mysterious theater and when the show starts, all hell breaks loose.....literally. This is the kind of film that was scripted over an alcoholic binge one night.
3/19 - Dawn of the Dead (1978) (2004 AB Divimax version) **** Listened to the new commentary track featuring George and Chris Romero and Tom Savini. The addition of Perry Martin to moderate the proceedings was a great idea. Great audio track with enthusiastic and informative exchanges from all the parties involved.
3/21 - Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974) (laserdisc) ** 1/2 Kung fu and vampires. Nuff said!
3/22 - Noir: Shades of Darkness (Vol. 1) (2001) (dvd) *** Vol. 1 covers the first five episodes in the 26 episode series about two young female assassins brought together to unravel the mystery surrounding their missing past. So far, so good! Very dark with nary a touch of humor.....and atmosphere on top of atmosphere. Awesome music backs up the great animation.
3/29 - The Company of Wolves (1984) (dvd) *** 1/2 A metaphorical take on "Little Red Riding Hood", where a young Rosaleen learns about "staying on the path" and watching out for the "wolves" as she enters womanhood. Very surreal fable with some great set deigns and atmosphere. Sarah Patterson is just exceptional in her role as Rosaleen and Angela Lansbury has a nice turn as Rosaleen's grandmother. (A Hellbilly Pick)
3/30 - Cabin Fever (2002) (dvd) *** Five teens partying at a cabin come across an infected bum, who is carrying an extremely contagious flesh-eating virus....and you can guess where the film goes from there. Extremely black horror-comedy with the emphasis on the yucks in the second half. I want to deduct half-a-star for some groaner homages (read: blatant ripoffs) from some horror classics, but the movie had me on the floor laughing out loud so much, that I'll give it a pass, for now. I'm off to have some pancakes and lemonade. (A Hellbilly Pick)
3/31 - Heaven (2002) (dvd) *** Cate Blanchett stars as a British teacher living in Italy, whose miscalculated assassination attempt on a drug dealer (she ends up accidently killing four innocent bystanders instead) lands her under arrest and under interrogation. Giovanni Ribisi is a young policeman/interpreter who falls for the teacher, and risks it all to help her escape. Heaven is beautifully shot and the performances are truly great, but the second half loses steam and the ending (which is somewhat predictable for those using the full-circle pattern of storytelling), however appropriate in a allegorical sense, still feels like somewhat of a cheat.

April

4/2 - Something to Scream About (2003) (dvd) *** Entertaining documentary with interviews and clips from 9 Scream Queens, including the hostess herself, Brinke Stevens. The lineup includes Ariauna Albright, Brandi Burkett, Debra Deliso, Denice Duff, Judith O'Dea, Debbie Rochon, Felissa Rose, Lilith Stabs, and Julie Strain. Surprisingly frank and revealing interviews from all the actresses about the business, raise this feature above the usual fandom fare.
4/4 - True Romance (1993) (dvd) *** 1/2 Christian Slater plays a lonely fanboy, Clarence, who meets his soulmate, Patricia Arquette's Alabama, one night while attending a Sonny Chiba triple feature for his birthday. And from there on, a rollercoaster ride begins (literally at one point) that involves a vicious pimp, a suitcase full of cocaine, and drug dealers hot on the trail of our star-crossed lovers. Funny, violent, AND sweet, True Romance is loaded with star power (Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, and on and on) and the contributions all work perfectly: it's never overkill for the sake of marquee vanity. And while Director Tony Scott's visual style is a bit trying at times (does the man have a fetish for fans and venetian blinds, or what?), True Romance is all about the great performances and Quentin Tarantino's sharp writing. (Group Therapy: A Hellbilly, onebyone, and Paff Pick)
4/6 - Comic Book:The Movie (2004) (dvd) * 1/2 A mockumentary about a comic book geek (Mark Hamill) trying to keep the history and integrity of his favorite comic book hero, Commander Courage, from being tainted by the greedy filmmakers looking to bring the superhero to the big screen. Virtually every joke falls flat, and the predictable storyline always feels one-step behind the viewer. With the exception of a few forced cameos (Kevin Smith, Bruce Campbell, etc) and footage from the 2002 Comic-Con, there's not enough in here to recommend to comic geeks, nor to general audiences for that matter. Half a star is given out of charity, just for a Captain Carrot spoof. A very tough film to finish otherwise....
4/7 - House By the Cemetery (1981) (ld) * "Ann? Mommy says you're not dead. Is that true?" I think that quote about says it all, huh?
4/12 - Identity (Extended Cut) (2003) (dvd) **** Ten strangers stranded in a isolated motel during a thunderstorm. The bodies begin to pile up, as do the suspects. If the first half of Identity seems to be a little TOO familiar, then it's only because of the method behind the madness. Identity is the type of film that one will appreciate more after they've had some time to go back and piece the clues together more. One of the best films of 2003.
4/14 - Reservoir Dogs (1992) (dvd) **** "Was that as good for you as it was for me?"
4/14 - Pulp Fiction (1994) (dvd) **** "Get it straight, gentlemen: I'm not here to say please, I'm here to tell you what to do. And if self-preservation is an instinct that you possess, you'd better do it and do it quick."
4/15 - Jackie Brown (1997) (dvd) **** "Half a million dollars will always be missed."
4/16 - Kill Bill:Vol. 1 (2003) (dvd) ***1/2 "You call that begging? You can beg better than that."
4/16 - Kill Bill:Vol. 2 (2004) (Garner Towne Square) ***1/2 The Bride continues her mission of vengeance, and Tarantino forgoes the kinetic action orgy of Vol. 1 to deliver a more personal and low-key conclusion. The dialogue is so vital, and the performances hit all the right emotional notes. Vol. 2 would be superior to Vol. 1, if it only had a few more cuts. I am looking forward to seeing how well having both Volumes combined into one film will be.
4/19 - Street Trash (1987) (dvd) ** I can tell you that the film takes place in a salvage yard and follows two young homeless brothers. After that, it's a strange concoction of angry bums, bad fight choreography, necrophilia, rape, Nam flashbacks, STD, flatulence, wiseguys, a coroner's sculpture, puking, severed penis keep-a-way, a flying propane tank, more puking, a femur bone knife, and.....oh yeah...a strange drink named "Viper" which has all the bums who drink it, either melting down to their shoes...or exploding! Strangely entertaining at times.
4/23 - Noir - Hit List (Vol. 2) (2001) (dvd) ***
4/24 - Noir - The Firing Chamber (Vol. 3) (2001) (dvd) ***
4/25 - Noir - Death Warrant (Vol. 4) (2001) (dvd) ***
4/25 - Noir - Terminal Velocity (Vol. 5) (2001) (dvd) ***
4/26 - Noir - Cloaks and Daggers (Vol. 6) (2001) (dvd) ***
4/26 - Noir - The End of the Matter (Vol. 7) (2001) (dvd) *** While not technically the end, there is a little bittersweet finality to the struggles of Kirika, Mirielle, Chloe, and Altena. I was really surprised by the depth of this final Volume: it took some bold turns that I wasn't expecting...and I admired that the creators took some chances with these characters, and with the underlying theme. Overall, a very good series. If you can suspend your belief for some of the over-the-top (albeit poetic) action scenes and stay with the story, then you will be rewarded with a memorable-but-somber lesson on redemption and friendship. (A Paff Pick)
4/27 - Enter the Dragon (1973) (dvd) *** "We are all ready to win, just as we are born knowing only life. It is defeat that you must learn to prepare for."
4/27 - Fists of Fury (1971) (dvd) ** Low..low..low budget Bruce Lee chop-socky fest. Dated, cheesy, and predictable, this revenge yarn still goes down rather easily thanks to Lee's great presence and some eye candy from Maria Yi! Rrrrrrrrr!

May

5/1 - The Mechanic (1972) (dvd) *** Charles Bronson plays the seasoned hit man who agrees to train the young newcomer Jan-Michael Vincent in the ways of the "mechanic". The opening ten minutes are worth the recommendation alone.
5/2 - Blood Simple (1984) (dvd) **** A bar owner hires a sleazy detective to make corpses out of his cheating wife and her lover, a former employee at his bar. Let's just say that things don't go according to plan. A very black comedy of errors that may take more than one viewing to piece together the puzzle. Highly recommended.
5/3 - A Fistful of Dollars (1964) (dvd) *** "When a man's got money in his pocket, he begins to appreciate peace."
5/4 - Daredevil (2003) (dvd) *** A pleasant surprise all the way! I really enjoyed the romantic angle of this superhero yarn. And Colin Farrell's turn as the deadly "Bullseye" hit the mark, pun intended.
5/5 - Jason and the Argonauts (1963) (dvd) **1/2 Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion effects carry this sword-and-sandle Greek Mythology epic. Although the acting and some of the effects are dated, there still enough good moments to qualify this for at least one viewing. The stop-motion skeletons, brandishing shields and swords, still impresses!
5/6 - Five Deadly Venoms (1978) (dvd) *** "Poison Clan rocks the world."
5/16 - Conan the Barbarian (1982) (dvd) *** "Do you want to live forever?"
5/17 - Wolfen (1981) (dvd) ** 1/2 A group of deadly supernatural wolves (no, not werewolves) protect their sacred grounds in NYC from developers, by killing all those who threaten their sanctity. Great premise starting out, but the film starts going against its own rules (some of the wolves' victims are innocent targets, for example) and the ending feels way too predictable and easy. Not bad for horror completists, but definitely a missed opportunity.
5/18 - Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) (dvd) *** James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) teaming up with Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh)! All is good in the world!
5/20 - Resident Evil (2002) (dvd) ** Predictable, safe, and boring. Not good traits for a zombie movie to possess.
5/21 - The Fog (1980) (dvd) **1/2 As the small fishing town of Antonio Bay gets ready to celebrate its 100th birthday, a mysterious, glowing, green fog starts rolling onto shore and bringing with it the ghosts of some pirates seeking revenge for crimes long-forgotten. The Fog seems to quit right as it is getting started. I wanted more! The resolution felt rushed and too easy in relation to the build-up for it. On a sidenote, Adrienne Barbeau does have quite the radio voice, eh?
5/22 - Yojimbo (1961) (dvd) *** Later remade as A Fistful of Dollars, Yojimbo ("Bodyguard") tells the story of Sanjuro Kuwabatake, a drifting "samurai with no master" who comes upon a small town besieged by two rival gangs. Sanjuro uses his great cunning to work both gangs to destroy one another, all while he makes a nice tidy profit in the process.....and enjoys some sake on the side! A little darker in tone than its sequel, Yojimbo still delivers the action and the always great acting of Toshiro Mifune as Yojimbo.
5/23 - Dawn of the Mummy (1981) (dvd) * Just as bad as I remembered.
5/24 - Hidden Fortress (1958) (dvd) **** "Hide stones among stones, men among men."
5/28 - Phenomena (1985) (dvd) *1/2 Jennifer Corvino (Jennifer Connelly) is a young transfer student to a Swiss boarding school. Oh, and by the way, Jennifer has the ability to communicate with, and control, insects; a gift that may later come in handy in finding a serial killer who has been terrorizing the locals. There were so many unintentional laugh-out-loud moments in this epic, that I honestly lost count. The helper monkey chasing after the killer and holding onto the roof of the getaway car is an image that I will take to my grave.
5/29 - Goldfinger (1964) (dvd) *** "My dear girl, there are some things that just aren't done, such as drinking Dom Perignon '53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That's just as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!"

June

6/2 - Lady Snowblood (1973) (dvd) *** Destined from birth to avenge the crimes committed against her deceased mother and family, Yuki ("Lady Snowblood") spends her childhood in training and her adulthood in tracking down those responsible. A source of inspiration for Kill Bill, Lady Snowblood has a surprisingly modern feel to it.....along with some strong graphic violence....which may be all the recommendation needed for some. Meiko Kaji also brings great intensity to the title lead!
6/2 - Lady Snowblood:Love Song of Vengeance (1974) (dvd) ** Lackluster sequel has Lady Snowblood caught in the middle of a political struggle for power, while doing an assassination job to fufill her pardon from a death sentence. A well-made film that strangely seems to abandon it's most important element throughout: Lady Snowblood. Fans of the original may feel cheated this time around, as the titular heroine is treated like an afterthought in her own film.
6/5 - Dementia 13 (1963) (dvd) *** An axe murderer is stalking a family around Castle Haloran. Francis Ford Coppola's feature debut is a stylish, absorbing one.
6/6 - They Live (1988) (dvd) *** "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum."
6/9 - Switchblade Sisters (1975) (dvd) *** "You can beat us, chain us, lock us up But we're gonna be back, understand? And when we do cop, you better keep your ass off our turf, or we'll blow it off! Ya dig? We're Jezebels, cop. Remember that name. We'll be back!" (A Hellbilly Pick)
6/15 - Soylent Green (1973) (dvd) *** "He'll like you. You're a hella piece of furniture!"
6/19 - Logan's Run (1976) (dvd) *** "Let's take our clothes off before they freeze to us."
6/24 - Ikiru (1952) (dvd) **** Kanji Watanbe is a 30-year government worker at Tokyo City Hall, spending his working hours stamping request forms useless and directing citizens' problems down an endless bureaucratic pipeline that never seems to get anything of real substance accomplished. Until one fateful day at a doctor's office, when Watanbe learns that he has stomach cancer and, at best, a year of life left. Faced with his mortality and regret over a lifetime of wasted opportunities, Watanbe sets out to make a difference. This is, quite simply, one of the most powerful films that I have had the privilege of seeing. The film doesn't pull any punches in its delivery. There are no easy answers, but the final message is one of hope for the individual human spirit...if not for the system itself. And you will never look at a child's toy rabbit in quite the same way again.

July

7/ 3 - Sanjuro (1962) (dvd) ***1/2 Sequel to Yojimbo, has the drifter Sanjuro helping a group of young samurai misfits to rescue a kidnapped politician. While many perceive this sequel to be below Yojimbo, I was more engaged with the Sanjuro character ...and found the humor more potent and welcome here.
7/ 8 - Bad Taste (1987) (dvd) *** "I'm a Derek, and Dereks don't run!"
7/ 9 - Floating Weeds (1959) (dvd) **** The leader of a struggling Kabuki troupe, Komajuro Arashi, returns to the fishing village where his ex resides....along with his son, whom has been deceived to believe that Komajuro is actually his uncle. When Kamajuro's current mistress learns of the ex, her jealousy culminates in a plan to get back at Komajuro through his son. Very moving drama that ends on a perfect note, and not with any false notions about easy fixes.
7/10 - Tokyo Story (1953) (dvd) **** An elderly couple travel to Tokyo to visit their children and are met with the reality that their children have grown apart from them. Quiet, understated film feels more like a snapshot of family relations, than a sermon on it.
7/12 - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Extended Version (1966) (dvd) **** "You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig." This may very well be the greatest western ever made.
7/13 - From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) (dvd) *** I listened to the commentary track. Great commentary track with QT and Rodriguez!
7/14 - Samurai Fiction (1998) (dvd) **1/2 An obvious homage to Kurosawa, this is a fair samurai flick. What it lacks in action, it makes up for in little comedic touches, like the elderly ninja adviser who emerges from the ceiling tiles when called upon. And Tamaki Ogawa (who plays the elder samurai's daughter and love interest for our hero) is impossibly gorgeous...even if she has a weird knack for giggling at nosebleeds.
7/20 - Night of the Demon (1957) (dvd) *** Professional skeptic Dr. Holden (Dana Andrews), is cursed by an occultist trying to persuade the Doctor to drop his crusade to debunk the black arts. Dr. Holden is marked for death and only has a set number of hours left until he is to be visited by a demon. A fun story to follow, but nowhere near the scarefest that it's reputed to be. The seance scene almost takes the film down another notch.
7/24 - Phantasm (1979) (dvd) *** I listened to the commentary again. One of the better commentary tracks out there. Very informative and a great reunion-type atmosphere to the proceedings.
7/26 - Todd McFarlane's Spawn (1997) (dvd) ** "Bring me his bones in one bag and his organs in another."
7/27 - Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) (dvd) ** Let's see. How would you lessen the destruction caused by one giant monster on the cities of Japan? That's right: build a mechanical equivalent of said giant monster and have TWO giant monsters out among the natives duking it out. THAT will save some buildings, I'm sure. Not that I was looking for logic in a film of this nature, but I also didn't get my fill of monster mayhem anyway.
7/28 - Futurama:Volume 1 (1999) (dvd) *** "Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you."
7/29 - Futurama:Volume 1 (1999) (dvd) *** "Yeah, well I'm gonna go build my own theme park, with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the park!"
7/30 - MST3K: The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1996) (dvd) ** An average MST3K outing: some fair yucks here and there, but it never quite gets into a consistent groove. "Jan in the pan" is a great line though!
7/31 - MST3K: Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues (1993) (dvd) *** An instant MST3K classic. This backwoods travesty takes awhile to get going, but once our hapless Bigfoot hunters come across the OTHER Missing Link known as Old Man Crenshaw, the laughs come fast and furious.

August

8/2 - MST3K: Space Mutiny (1997) (dvd) **** I laughed so hard that I coughed up spaghetti. What more recommendation do you need?
8/3 - MST3K: The Hellcats (1990) (dvd) *1/2 So bad that not even MST can save it.
8/5 - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) (dvd) ***1/2 "Still 'old friend'. You've managed to kill everyone else but, like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target."
8/7 - Frailty (2002) (dvd) **** Bill Paxton directed and stars in this unnerving thriller as a father who professes to his two young sons that he was visited by an angel from above....with instructions to seek out and destroy "demons" disguised as humans. Very impressive directorial debut from Paxton touches on sensitive issues like family loyalty and religious fanaticism, while layering on the suspense and creepy imagery to great effect.
8/8 - Detroit 9000 (1973) (dvd) **1/2 The film's tagline: "Visit the murder capital of the world--where the honkies are the minority!" should clue you into the blaxploitation vibe coming from Detroit 9000. As action films go, standard fare which has its moments, but just not enough of them to make it memorable.
8/9 - The Street Fighter (1974) (dvd) *** Sonny Chiba's violent chop socky actioner will more than fit the bill for those going in with the proper expectations for this type of fare. The brain punch is an unforgettable scene!
8/20 - The Matrix (1999) (dvd) **** "Never send a human to do a machine's job."
8/21 - The Matrix:Reloaded (2003) (dvd) **1/2 "Denial is the most predictable of all human responses."
8/22 - The Matrix:Revolutions (2003) (dvd) ** "Still don't recognize me? I admit it is difficult to even think encased in this rotting piece of meat. The stink of it filling every breath, a suffocating cloud you can't escape. Disgusting. How pathetically fragile it is. Nothing this weak is meant to survive."
8/24 - The Last Samurai (2003) (dvd) *** Set in 1870's Japan, Tom Cruise play Captain Nathan Algren, a washed-up, alcoholic shell of a former leader who is given a second chance at redemption when he is hired on to help bring Japan's current army of samurai up to speed in the ways of modern warfare. The Last Samurai is wholly-absorbing up until the final thirty minutes when the film plays it safe by shoveling the tougher storylines to the back and serving up another predictable and safe Hollywood ending instead.
8/25 - The Animatrix (2003) (dvd) **1/2 A collection of nine animated shorts ( from various artists using anime and computer generated art ) brought to us from the creators of The Matrix trilogy, this set is inspired by and ties in to the popular Matrix universe with varying degrees. Unfortunately, the shorts themselves usually result in more eye candy than compelling storylines.
8/27 - Bio Zombie (1998) (dvd) *** In this comedic asian tribute to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, two video store slackers find themselves trapped in a shopping mall afterhours with a small group of survivors fending off the undead. Goofy, harmless fun for most of the running time, although some may be startled by the sudden shift in tone during the final moments.

September

9/2 - The Godfather (1972) (dvd) **** "In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns."
9/3 - The Godfather:Part II (1974) (dvd) **** "I don't feel I have to wipe everybody out, Tom, just my enemies."
9/4 - The Godfather:Part III (1990) (dvd) **1/2 "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"
9/9 - The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) (dvd) ***1/2 Quiet, visually arresting film follows the training of a young girl, 10 year old Mui, as a house servant in 1950's Vietnam. Easily of the most meditative films that I have ever seen. A film about the beauty of the "mundane" and the life experiences that we have taken for granted over the years. Highly recommended.
9/17 - Ginger Snaps (2000) (dvd) *** Sisters and high school outcasts, Ginger ( Katharine Isabelle ) and Brigitte ( Emily Perkins ) are attacked by a werewolf one fateful evening and manage to escape with their lives. Brigitte emerges unscathed, but Ginger suffers a vicious bite from the attack.......and Horror Fan knows all-too-well where the film is headed at this point. Bolstered by strong performances and a nice coming of age metaphor ( lycanthropy and a girl's first period do seem plausible partners in crime ) carry Ginger Snaps well above other films of its ilk.
9/25 - Stray Dog (1949) (dvd) ***1/2 Engrossing noir from Akira Kurosawa involves a young police detective, Murakami, ( played by the always compelling Toshiro Mifune ) getting his pistol pickpocketed from him while on a public bus, resulting in a frantic race to find the thief and the weapon before lives are lost.
9/30 - Cannonball (1976) (dvd) ** Mr. Uber-Cool Racer Coy 'Cannoball' Buckman ( David Carradine ) enters the annual secret Trans-American outlaw road race, where the only rule is that the first one to finish is the winner. Cross-country race picture has all the ingredients common to the subgenre......speeding cars, auto pileups, fistfights, etc etc....and not much more beyond that. Only for Carradine completists.
9/30 - Circle of Iron (1978) (dvd) *** A young martial artist, Cord (Jeff Cooper), goes out on a dangerous journey (aren't they all in these films?) to find the much-coveted Book of All Knowledge, which is possessed by the all-powerful and all-knowing Zetan. The quest is one that will have Cord coming in contact with many different characters and many different trials that will test both his will to survive and, more importantly, his willingness to learn and accept himself. Quiet, effective film with some of David Carradine's best characters.

October

10/5 - The Dirty Dozen (1967) (dvd) ***1/2 "You've seen a General inspecting troops before, haven't you? Just walk slow, act dumb, and look stupid!"
10/12 - Najica Blitz Tactics: Vol. 1 (2001) (dvd) * Anime (with fan service overload) centers its story around young heroine Najica Hiragi, a world-famous perfumer who is also, of course, a top-secret agent with 007-like gadgets and adventures.....and her unlikely pairing with a cute (but still learning on the job) android Lila. Some fun fish-out-of-water moments, courtesy of Lila, help salvage what is basically a panty-fest geared more towards 13 year old boys with raging hormones.
10/13 - Day of the Dead (1985) (dvd) *** "This is one big, long 16-mile wide tombstone!"
10/22 - Horror of Dracula (1958) (Horrorama 2004) **1/2 Extremely plodding and predictable Hammer fare. Lee and Cushing on screen received great applause from the Horrorama audience: their star turns were the saving grace here. The print was pretty good, considering the age of the film.....although therewere a few spots where the color was faded-out badly.
10/22 - Toss of the Coin (2002) (Horrorama 2004) *** - A 12 minute short that was pretty impressive! A man dies from an accidental electrocution in his own bathtub (i.e. plugged-in radios perched on bathtub ledges and cats don't mix). Shortly thereafter, both a demon and an angel arrive on the scene....and both parties want to claim the man's soul. Predictable ending, but still has some cute moments and great dialogue.
10/22 - The Thrill Killers (1964) (Horrorama 2004) *1/2 - Awful Steckler opus about escaped mental patients threatening malt shop cariactures. Cheesy! At this point, the audience had to bond together and go in the Mystery Science Theater mode to survive this puppy. Which was good, because the next film was....
10/22 - The Demoniacs (1973) (Horrorama 2004) *1/2 - Wow! What a piece of mind-numbing crap! The audience was ALL over this strange French concoction! Take Ronald McDonald, the Olsen twins, angry rapist pirates...and throw them into a film that looks like it was edited by a some poor soul in the midst of an alcoholic binge and you START to get an idea of how bad this was. The entire audience was in laughing fits all the way through! We are talking tears streaming down the face here folks. How bad was it? Well, after the film was over, they held a contest for audience members to come up and summarize in one sentence what they learned from The Demoniacs. Let me just say that all the responses were negative...and a good portion of them are not repeatable in public.
10/22 - Burial Ground (1980) (Horrorama 2004) ** - Easily the crowd favorite! It was going onto three in the morning, but everyone got their second wind watching a great print of zombi-fu! Yes, people still applaud decapitations and disembowlments heartily. And of course, the greatest audience reaction came from that historic moment at the finale, when zombie-fu took on breast-fu in a climatic battle to the finish.
10/26 - Hellspawn (1993) (dvd) * My personal introduction to the work of the Polonia Brothers comes in the form of what can kindly be considered an 86 minute instructional video in how not to make a good film. Mind-boggingly inept in every area of cinematic technique, the mere existence of Hellspawn as a commercial property should at least give hope to future filmmakers that there is a spot in the marketplace for just about anything. Just awful. (A Luna Pick)
10/29 - Superstition (1982) (vhs) ** Family moves into a house with a pond out back that just happens to have been the drowning pool/execution site for a lynched witch back in 1692.....and the witch appears to have come back from the watery grave for some revenge. I hate seeing new homeowners struggle with land issues like that! At any rate, gorehounds will want to tune in for some rather creative mayhem.
10/30 - Audition (1999) (dvd) *** "Words create lies. Pain can be trusted."
10/30 - The Omen (1976) (dvd) *** "Look at me Damien! It's all for you."
10/30 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) (ld) ***1/2 "My family's always been in meat."
10/30 - A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) (dvd) **** Stellar South Korean film that deals with two sisters coming home to live with their father and stepmother after a brief stay in a mental institution. Soon, unresolved tensions resurface between the sisters and their stepmother.....and there is a past event alluded to in hushes, that nobody in the household seems to want to revisit. Beautifully-shot with strong performances across the board, A Tale of Two Sisters is surprising in its emotional depth and the issues it covers, as it emerges as a film that is equal-parts both terrifying and heartbreaking. Highly recommended. (A Paff Pick)
10/30 - The Sender (1982) (ld) *** "Your dreams will never be the same."

November

11/1 - Night of the Living Dead (1968) (dvd) ***1/2 "We may not enjoy living together, but dying together isn't going to solve anything."
11/1 - Dawn of the Dead: Director's Cut (1978) (ld) **** "The only person who could miss with this gun is the sucker with the bread to buy it."
11/1 - Day of the Dead (1985) (dvd) **1/2 "They are us."
11/26 - Hellsing: Vol. 1: Impure Souls (2002) (dvd) *** Horror anime about a British task force, the Hellsing Organization, assigned to destroy vampires. The main weapon of the task force, which is led by the daughter of the late Prof. Van Helsing, is an Uber-Vampire named Alucard. Sporadic bits of violence and sex pepper this fairly-engaging (albeit short) series. Worth checking out for vampire completists.

December

12/4 - Hellsing: Vol. 2: Blood Brothers (2002) (dvd) ***
12/6 - Hellsing: Vol. 3: Search and Destroy (2002) (dvd) ***
12/8 - Hellsing: Vol. 4: Eternal Damnation (2002) (dvd) ***
12/12 - Shogun Assassin (1980) (dvd) *** New World Pictures' mixing of the first two Lone Wolf and Cub films works surprisingly-well on its own because of a great new electronic score and an added-emphasis on keeping the action flowing. Never would I dream of recommending Shogun Assassin over the actual Lone Wolf and Cub Series, but as a separate entity with its own strengths, it serves well as an introduction and complement to the original Lone Wolf and Cub films.
12/18 - The Shining (1980) (dvd) ***1/2 "Some places are like people: some shine and some don't."

Ratings:
**** = Excellent
*** = Good
** = Fair
* = Poor

All film titles in BOLD represent first-time viewings.

Scaled on 1 to 5 stars, first viewings are underlined.

* vomit stew
** bad film
*** good film
**** excellent film
***** a grand artistic achievement... the 'anti-vomit stew'

Haven't watched a dang thing yet this year. No wait; when I got home at 6:00 am New Year's Day, I did pop in a Motorhead dvd and pissed off the neighbors... does that count?
  • 1/1 The Best of Motorhead, video = ***, sound = ***, content = ****
  • 1/5 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1932, video = ***1/2, sound = ****, content = *****
(Great movie! A bit over the top in the drama/romance, but hey, that's how they did it in the '30s. The action was over the top too, and it kicks ass. Fredric March really lets it all out here. The only drawback to the dvd is that the print, while having fine contrast and brightness levels, and very little print damage at all, is a bit dirty with slight grain and fibers throughout the film. Other than that, the new Warner dvd is great!)
  • 1/10 Zatoichi 4; The Fugitive, video = ***, sound = ***, content = **1/2
  • 1/11 The Castle of Fu Manchu, video = ***, sound = ***, content = **1/2
  • 1/11 Love on the Run (from The Adventures of Antoine Doinel Criterion box set), video = ***, sound = ***, content = ***
  • 1/13 The Blood of Fu Manchu, video = ***, sound = ***, content = ***
  • 1/14 Check and Double Check with Amos and Andy, video = **1/2, sound = **, content = **
  • 1/16 Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy, video = **, sound = **, content = Off the charts!
(Post-production bullshit kills this otherwise classic film; endless voice over narration, weak dubbing (not to mention a virtually non-existant script... except for the fuckin' narrator), and some cheap assed graphic effects really took me out of the film at points, but otherwise, this is a fine example of the lingerie murder party genre - recommended!)
  • 1/17 The Who - The Kids Are Alright, video = ***, sound = ****, content = ****
  • 1/18 Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii, video = ***, sound = ****, content = *****
  • 1/18 Snatch, video = ****, sound = ****, content = ****
  • 1/25 Borderline, video = ***, sound = **, content = ***
  • 1/30 Once Upon a Time in Mexico, video = ****, sound = ****, content = ***1/2
  • 1/31 The Bloody Judge, video = ***, sound = ***, content = ***1/2
  • Sometime between Jan. 31st and May 30th (graded simply on artistic merit alone)...
    Fear in the Night ***
    Rosemary's Baby ****
    The Point ****
    Kill Bill ****
    Kill Bill part 2 ****
    Home on the Range ***
    Scarface (Pacino) ***1/2
    The Last Samurai ****
    Bubba Ho-tep ****
The Marriage of Maria Braun ****
  • 5/31 Lost in Translation ****
  • 6/5 Hong Kong 1941 ***
  • 6/8 WIZARDS, (Ralph Bakshi's) ***** One of my all time favorite movies.
  • 6/12 The Italian Job ('69) ***
  • 6/13 Magnum Force ****
  • 6/19 SS Hell Camp (a.k.a. The Beast in Heat) **
  • 6/19 Crippled Masters **
  • 6/20 Lola ****
  • 6/22 Picture Claire ***
  • 6/24 Die! Die! My Darling! ***1/2 Fine pace, plot and acting. Quite good!
  • 6/25 Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell ***1/2
  • 6/26 Shaolin Chastity Kung Fu **1/2 Decent chop socky flick, with some great, brutal action... but the Wu Tang edition dvd sucks ass, being zoomed in on. Several times people would be speaking off camera, making it painfully obvious you were also missing a quarter of the action. Fuck cropped films, fuck 'em right in the ass.
  • 6/26 Godzilla (original) **** Sure, I've seen the dubbed version before, both with and without Raymond Burr, but this was the original, unedited version in Japanese with English subtitles on the big screen! Truly an exceptional experience. It is slightly slow, and Godzilla doesn't go on a rampage until the film is well into it's second half, but the photography is great, especially if you love '50s Japan like I do, and the acting, while not anything exceptional, is quite good. The main thing here is that hearing the original Japanese dialogue, the movie loses the hoaky, schlocky vibe due to atrocious dubbing. It comes off much more believable and serious with the original voices. Highly recommended if it's playing in your area.
  • 6/27 Secretary **** Great movie!
  • 6/29 Salon Kitty *** Twisted, and visually striking.
  • 7/1 Nightmares Come at Night **1/2 Some decent eye candy scenes, but just not a whole hell of a lot else happening here. Luscious Soledad Miranda is hardly in the film, so don't get sucked into it for her. If you dig Jess Franco and late '60s lesbianism lite, check it out.
  • 7/3 Spider-man 2 ****
  • 7/8 Schtickmen *** Slightly uneven but humorous mocumentary about aspiring stand-up comics, shot in Dallas, undistributed. Caught this at a special screening.
  • 7/8 Based on a True Story **1/2 Technically good indie thriller. Acting and dialogue left a bit to be desired, but it was shot well, and it had a fine pace. Undistributed, seen at the same screening as Schtickmen.
  • 7/9 The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 ****1/2 A gem of an action/suspense thriller. One of my favorites.
  • 7/10 Ghost Dog; Way of the Warrior ***1/2
  • 7/12 Dracula Has Risen from the Grave ***1/2 Some killer scenes in this one - it's always been a fave of mine. It is a bit slow, but the imagery makes up for it.
  • 7/15 The Ladykillers (the original, w/ Alec Guinness) **** Classic heist tomfoolery. Haven't seen the Hanks remake, but how can you go wrong with Guinness, Peter Sellers, and Herbert Lom? Also, the old lady was great. Check this out if you dig vintage Brit comedy.
  • 7/15 The Man in the White Suit **** Alec Guinness again; Interesting premise. Pokes fun at corporations and workers alike, with progress and innovation caught in the middle. Slightly preachy, but interesting, funny, and just plain well done.
  • 7/16 I Spit on Your Grave ***1/2 Technically well done slice of '70s sleaze. I went into this thinking it would probably be a cinematic failure, and that it had gained notoriety soley due to it's subject matter, however, I was really impressed with the filming, editing and to a degree the acting. The story itself just steamrolls right ahead, with little time for introspection or character development... which is fine for this movie. The legendary copy for the film promises nothing more than it is; rape, revenge... and we're done.
  • 7/18 The Name of the Rose ****
  • 7/24 Army of Darkness ****
  • 8/1 Helter Skelter ***
  • 8/7 Terminator 3 *** Don't understand why everyone hates this one so much. I thought it was a pretty solid action flick. Not great, but good. Definitely not suck-ass.
  • 8/8 Zatoichi ('04) *** Decent. Kinda disjointed and drawn out, and CGI gore keeps this one from being really good. The main story works though. I could see cutting out about 10 or 15 minutes. And wtf was with the Broadway musical finale?
  • 8/18 Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidora: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack ('01) **** Great modern effects, good pacing and camera work. Plus, an all-star monster cast - what more could you want?
  • 8/20 Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ('02) ***1/2 Again, great flick on a technical level, but it drops a little under GMKGGMAOA due to the low monster count. It almost makes up for that though in the characterization (of the human characters) and their plot devices, something these films aren't generally known for. And Mechagodzilla looks great!
  • 8/24 Spaceways **1/2 Oof! What a turkey! Sure, the Hammer legends are there behind the camera, but this crazy flick offers a hodgepodge of plotlines none of which ever get developed much. For Hammer enthusiasts/completists only. I can't say it was a complete waste of time, or that it was terrible (technically, it was pretty good), but a non-Hammer or 50s sci-fi fan would have big trouble with this one.
  • 8/29 28 Days Later ***1/2 Cool flick.
  • 8/29 Assault on Precinct 13 ***1/2 Classic.
  • 9/3 Donnie Darko, Director's Cut **** Great atmosphere.
  • 9/4 The Testament of Dr. Mabuse ***1/2
  • 9/6 Hero ***1/2 Exquisite looking film.
  • 9/12 Ilsa; She-Wolf of the SS **** Graded more for it's place in film history than it's actual artistic merit. The acting is horrible, and the graphic situations are notoriously worse. Technically decent, the film is a true, honest to badness landmark of trash/sleaze grindhouse cinema. Must be seen (at least by those strong of stomach).
  • 9/23 Bad Taste ***1/2
  • 9/24 Heavy Traffic ***1/2 Cool flick!
  • 9/30 Picnic at Hanging Rock **** Beautiful and creepy film... very haunting.
  • 10/1 An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe ***1/2 Price narrating Poe... perfection. The video quality is pretty bad, but what can you do? It's a television production from '72, and the source elements simply haven't held up. But nevermind that, Price's performances more than make up for it.
  • 10/2 Blood for Dracula *** Very stylized, good looking film.
  • 10/3 Dances with Wolves ****1/2 Truly a great film. I usually can't stand Costner, but he did well here.
  • 10/4 Primer **1/2 Well done, but kind of ambiguous and seems unfinished.
  • 10/8 Ramones Raw ***1/2 Kicks cretin ass.
  • 10/9 Team America ***1/2 FUCK YEAH!!
  • 10/15 Shaun of the Dead *** More fun than you can shake a severed limb at!
  • 10/16 Girls School Screamers ** Why did I watch this again? Technically decent editing, a couple of halfway decent kills, but pretty much boring as hell.
  • 10/16 Tomb of Ligeia ***1/2 Really good looking Corman/Price Poe adaptation, and unfortunately their last.
  • 10/17 End of the Century ***1/2 It was great to see the Ramones in all their glory. Great, incredible vintage clips. The interviews were revealing - sometimes fun, sometimes disturbing, and sometimes just sad.
  • 10/23 The Grudge ***1/2 Creeped me out pretty good.
  • 10/24 Day of the Animals *** Classic '70s survivalist cheese. WARNING; DVD is crap pan & scan. I didn't find it too distracting from the movie, but still, there were a few scenes where it's just painfully obvious, but which, thankfully, mostly don't happen during important scenes.
  • 10/29 The Prodigy *** Technically great, hardboiled action flick, but the dialogue and story was just decent. Still, it's got several good action scenes filmed really well... very violent. Saw an extended cut at a preview tonight, which was overlong at damn nearly two and a half hours... at midnight... oof.
  • 10/30 The Toolbox Murders ** Feh. A couple of decent kills but no plot development for the first half of the movie. This is actually a good thing though, considering that the movie plays like a horrible made for TV movie during the last half. Only worth watching for the sexy bathtub scene and the following frantic kill, the rest is blah.
  • 10/31 Flesh for Frankenstein *** Great looking film, and entertaining, if a bit disjointed. Then again, maybe that's part of the point.
  • 11/9 Onibaba **** Good looking, deep, interesting film.
  • 11/13 Kwaidan ***1/2 Eerie, phantasms galore.
  • 11/19 Pieces **1/2 Decent. Better than Toolbox Murders anyway. The story actually had some plot and was decently constructed.
  • 11/23 The Convent **1/2 Starts off dumb and bland, but gets pretty funny as it goes along. The neon demons are pretty hoaky at first too (looks like a bad 80s music video) but they get nastier and more evil as the movie progresses. Not too shabby, good for a laugh. Plus, you get Adrienne Barbeau kickin' ass, which is always a bonus. DVD has some pretty decent extras.
  • 11/27 Veronika Voss ***1/2
  • 12/10 Entrails of a Virgin ** Not half as good as I expected from the things I'd read about it over the years.
  • 12/10 Even Dwarfs Started Small *** Captivating film, but just not as tightly woven as Herzog's later works. Still, it's fucked up enough to hold your attention.

T.V. sets completed in 2004
SOAP!; 1st season... classic.
SPACE 1999; the megaset (full series, 1st and 2nd season) - Mehhhhmories... great shit, I tell ya.
Family Guy; 2nd and 3rd seasons. Family Guy fucking rules. nuff said.
SCTV; 1st season, vol. 1... such good stuff. John Candy, you're missed!
The Avengers; '67, through vol. 3. Simply exquisite.
Danger Man Very impressed with the fleshed out storylines told in tight half hour spots... and shot on location all over the world. Great series.
