2006: Track The Films You Watch

Although our URL suggests otherwise, us posters watch a lot more than just horror. We've all got varying amounts of free time and taste, and this thread is designed to track everything we've individually watched this year, and how our trends and tendencies change over the course of 365 days. So in this "Track The Films You Watch" thread, feel free to tabulate all your movies watched in whatever organizational method that suits you. Make one post, and one post only, and update that post everytime you've seen another movie that you want to add.

There will be a desire to perhaps comment on other people's movies watched, and that is why for this year I have created a "Comment on the films you watch" thread. This will hopefully provide an opportunity for more discussion with others on just what makes you watch the movies you do.

So reserve your spot now, and get ready for another great year of movie watching. This is the third year Horrordvds.com members have been tracking their movies, and the previous threads can be accessed below:

Scaled on 1 to 5 stars, first viewings are underlined, theatrical screenings are in red.

* vomit stew
** bad film
*** good film
**** excellent film
***** a grand artistic achievement... the 'anti-vomit stew'

JANUARY
  • 1/1 The Kids Are Alright, **** One of the best rock and roll movies ever made. Plenty of video and live footage along with great interview pieces, all culled from various points in the Who's history.
  • 1/2 Lifestyles of the Ramones, ***1/2 A goldmine of Ramones videos lightly interspersed with interview snippets from industry personnel and talent. Would love to see the unedited interviews, but just having all the videos makes this a must have for Ramones fans.
  • 1/3 Curse of the Werewolf, ***1/2 A young Oliver Reed does a fine job in this Hammer production. An involved backstory is given in the first half hour, grounding the movie solidly for what is to come. I personally think this is a plus but can see also how it compromised pace, and that some viewers might get a little restless.
  • 1/3 Black Hawk Down, ****
  • 1/3 Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), ****
  • 1/7 Star Wars Holiday Special, * Exceptionally horrible production. I remember watching this when it first aired (1978) and not being too impressed with it even then, but watching it now through adult eyes verifies that it was indeed an attrocious effort. Still, it's fun to see most of the original cast present and making fools of themselves, not to mention, here is the first appearance of Boba Fett. Must be seen at least once to be believed.
  • 1/16 Blood Simple, **** A lyrically visual masterpiece. The story itself is quite simple which is odd coming from the Brothers' Coen, but therein lies the beauty; you could literally watch this with no dialogue and it would still be a great film for the linear, cohesive storytelling the photography alone conveys. There are scenes reminiscent of the best suspense moments in film from Hitchcock to Carpenter. Really enjoyed this one.
  • 1/29 Network, **** Profound.
  • 1/30 Little Caesar, ***1/2 Edward G. Robinson's landmark breakout role. The pace is a bit stunted and the acting for the most part is only decent, but Robinson is terrific.

FEBRUARY
  • 2/2 The Incredible Mr. Limpet, ***1/2 A childhood favorite which still succeeds in giving me a good chuckle.
  • 2/5 42nd Street Forever, **** Fucking excellent collection of trailers for trash, exploitation, and other such fucked up flicks from the '60s and 70's.
  • 2/6 Venus Beauty Institute, ***1/2 If anything will get me to watch a chick-flick, it's Audrey Tautou; unfortunately for me, she doesn't factor into this one much. Quite the contrary, the primary focus of the movie is on Nathalie Baye's character who has, out of spite, turned her back on love and is now content with stringing along a collection of noncommittal flings when this one dude (incidentally, the lead actor from Brotherhood of the Wolf) comes along and has the unfortunate luck to fall head over heals for her. Said dude subsequently suffers much abuse in helping Nathalie's character find her way back to a meaningful relationship. Okay, not really my scene, right? But I must say, the script was well written and the story was pretty engaging. Don't let the copy on the dvd cover fool you either; this one isn't so lovey-dovey as it would have you believe and it's actually pretty trashy at times. The movie was shot well, with excellent lighting and even a few eyebrow raising (if not exactly eye-popping) erotic scenes, including one with Audrey steaming it up in black lace. Definitely worth a view in my book.
  • 2/19 Marty, ***1/2 Borgnine rocks.
  • 2/20 Good to See You Again, Alice Cooper, **** Excellent vintage footage of the '73 Billion Dollar Babies tour and the legendary lineup. I watched this as it was originally produced, and the only drawback is the scripted scenes they cut away to, interrupting the concert for horribly droll 'comedy' bits, often not even involving any of the group members (thankfully?). There is an option to watch the concert uninterrupted, which I will certainly do the next time I watch this gem.
  • 2/21 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, **** Can't go wrong with Capra and Stewart.

MARCH
  • 3/12 On the Waterfront, **** Excellent character study exceptionally delivered by Brando. Lee J. Cobb is great here too as the corrupt union boss. In regard to the photography, here is beautiful use of contrast, deftly utilizing the multitude of objects and textures found in the urban jungle.
  • 3/15 Five Easy Pieces, ***1/2 Nicholson's turn to perform a first-rate character study. The story itself isn't the most intriguing, but Nicholson keeps you in it. Karen Black turns out a pretty good performance too as the pathetically clingy, manic depressed girlfriend. None of her horror movies have anything on her creepy performance here.
  • 3/15 It Happened One Night, **** Capra does romantic comedy and it works well. Gable and Colbert have chemistry nearing the level of Powell and Loys from The Thin Man (incidentally, both movies came out the same year, 1934).
  • 3/19 The French Connection, **** Great stuff. Very gritty looking film, with matching subject matter. Hackman and Scheider are great, as well as the cinematography and Friedkin's direction. I love these 70's urban actioners, and this is one of the best of 'em.
  • 3/19 Serenity, ***
  • 3/21 Cabaret, **** Excellent production, recreating '30s Berlin very well. I remember seeing some of this on TV as a kid, but of course couldn't really understand all of the Nazi stuff back then. Watching it now, I think the movie subtly illustrates how individual lives were affected by the rise of the Nazis quite well. A very bleak musical.
  • 3/21 The Greatest Story Ever Told, **** Although I really like Max Von Sydow, I wasn't quite sold on him as Christ. Still, he did well enough and this was a terrific production. It handled the continuity of the tale very well and the look of the film was top notch. The cast list was simply insane, with very well known character actors just around every corner and in every nook and cranny. I mean, come on; Telly Savalas as Pontius Pilate? "Who loves ya, baby? Baby Jesus, that is."
  • 3/26 Superfly, **** A classic. The soundtrack alone is worth four stars, and the plot has the feel of Greek tragedy.
  • 3/27 Cape Fear (1961), ***** Superb depravity. Excellent score, photography and execution of plot. Acting is good by all the cast, but Mitchum steals the show.

APRIL
  • 4/4 Gimme Shelter, ****
  • 4/9 In the Heat of the Night, ****
  • 4/16 Masada - Live at Tonic, 1999, ***1/2 Catches the jazz quartet in a very small, intimate setting (John Zorn's own NY club), giving us a close-up look at the band dynamics and interplay. The music sounds great, and the mood, both of the band and of the crowd, is playful and exhilarated. You can't help but get caught up in it.
  • 4/16 AC/DC - Live at Donnington, ***1/2 Great value dvd, with two hours worth of material hammered out with all the energy and force one could expect.
  • 4/23 Ministry - Sphinctour, ***1/2 The music is great, but the constant editing of different footage from several shows for the same song really fucks up any feeling of continuity. Still, a pretty powerful and representative document of the mayhem that is a Ministry show.

MAY
  • 5/2 Shadow of a Doubt, **** One of the few Hitchcocks I've never seen. Excellent treatment of the 'wolf in sheeps clothing' theme.
  • 5/2 From Here To Eternity, **** Fine acting all around by a terrific ensemble cast. Hell, it's even got Superman George Reeves in it.
  • 5/23 Very Bad Things, ***
  • 5/29 A Bridge Too Far, ****
  • 5/29 Hell's Angels (1930), **** No, not a biker movie, but rather a WWI actioner. Great aerial scenes of biplane dogfights and even an attack on a zeppelin warship with a magnificent climax. Some good miniature model f/x too in one major sequence. There is some cornball humor and hammy acting along the way, but that hardly takes away from the marvelous action the film provides. This one really is a spectacle, especially considering the year it was made.
  • 5/30 Eye of the Needle, **** Tight little suspense thriller which gets real claustrophobic at the end with a one on one stand-off for the fate of WWII. Good work by the two leads, plus it's also cool to see a pre-Young Ones Rik Mayall here in a small cameo.
  • 5/31 The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), *** The slightly disjointed pacing knocks this one down a peg, but McQueen and Dunaway are good together, and it's a pretty good caper. Worth watching, just not stellar.

JUNE
  • 6/10 The Demons, **** Medieval torture, witch burnings, and naughty nuns, all brought to you by the stylistic eye of Jess Franco. I unfortunately watched a horribly cropped and edited American release version, a vhs port no less, but the movie gets high marks for visual content and for a few unintentional laughs along the way as well.
  • 6/13 Spirited Away, **** Story is done well and has a good pace, but it's the visuals and characterization here that really makes the movie. They did an excellent job on the lead, Chihiro, giving her facial and body movements that told more about her than any dialogue could. Also, the movie is full of detail, movement and outlandish beings. A feast for the eyes.
  • 6/13 Torn Curtain, ***1/2 Mid-60s Hitchcock espionage pic. Slightly disjointed and a bit surface deep, but still good.
  • 6/17 Hellboy, ***1/2
  • 6/20 Corpse Bride, ****1/2
  • 6/24 He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not, **** Very creepy character study on obsessive behavior. Good use of alternate perspective, the film stopping midway to back up and tell the same story from another character's point of view. As always, Audrey Tautou does an excellent job... but she's certainly no Amelie in this one.
  • 6/26 Three... Extremes, ****

JULY
  • 7/6 Waiting for Guffman, ****
  • 7/12 21 Grams, ***1/2
  • 7/15 Before Sunrise, ***1/2
  • 7/24 God's Gun, **1/2 Lee Van Cleef, Jack Palance, and Sybil Danning... what could go wrong? Well, maybe droll pacing and uninspired direction, for starters. And then there's Leif Garrett. There is however a modicum of near-decent action and plot to keep you in.
  • 7/24 Kid Vengeance, ** Van Cleef and Garret again in this reallll loose sequel to the above mentioned flick. Jim Brown shows up to lend a hand, but the movie just can't be helped. The same problems as above exist. And again, the action can be entertaining at times, but in this one the plot just crawls.

AUGUST
  • 8/7 House of Fury, **** Saw this at the Asian Film Festival of Dallas today. Very fun action pic choreographed by the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping. Stars Anthony Wong (bad guy from John Woo's Hard Boiled) as a widower having trouble relating to his two teenage kids... *mild spoiler follows* oh, and he's a secret agent assigned to protect another secret agent with a price on his head. Of course, his kids don't believe him until they all get caught up in a big revenge/kidnapping drama that the kids ultimately have to figure out how to resolve on their own. Good action, fine pace, and decent acting with some good laughs make this one a winner.
  • 8/7 Caveman, *** Good, not so clean fun.
  • 8/14 Alien Resurrection, extended cut, ***
  • 8/15 Clan of the Cave Bear, ***1/2
  • 8/20 The Skeleton Key, ***1/2 Surprisingly good. Only one actor, the lawyer, took me a bit out of the movie. Other than that, the pace, plot progression and overall vibe kept me in it.
  • 8/22 The Ring Two, ****
  • 8/23 Beerfest, ***1/2
  • 8/25 Pumping Iron, *** Pretty good docudrama about weightlifting competitors holds up well after 25 years. A must see for any self-respecting Arnie fan.
  • 8/26 Taoism Drunkard, ***1/2 Fucked up Asian action/fantasy chopsocky flick from '84. Would get four stars but it gets a little chatty at times getting in the way of the trippy action. Dueling devils, a drunken bum fighter, and a monster who resembles a big, black Pacman with razor sharp teeth who attacks, well, below the belt, as well as other twisted shit makes this a must see.
  • 8/28 Rasputin, the Mad Monk, ********** That's right, ten stars. One of my absolute favorite, if not my utmost favorite of Hammer's films. Chris Lee is wonderful as the mystic man of opportunity and intrigue, and the supporting cast, dialogue/writing and plot/pace move this sucker right along. Not the best set pieces, and certainly not high art, but just a damn well put together spectacle. Grab a bottle of wine ("Boris! Pay the man!"), throw out 'proper history', and enjoy.
  • 8/28 Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, ***1/2 Interesting if a bit one dimensional plot, great Harryhausen f/x work, and it's always nice to have Jane 'may we' Seymour in attendance. Saw this one in the theater when it came out in '77, and it was great to revisit it.

SEPTEMBER
  • 9/6 The Protector, ****
  • 9/16 Kiss Me Quick, *** Back when the humor was corny and the boobs were real. Super-bare plot only serves as excuse to deliver numerous softcore strip-teases. Fun!
  • 9/16 House On Bare Mountain, ***1/2 See above, but this one actually has an involved if sloppy plot about a granny moonshining operation under the guise of a girlschool. We get a drunken costume party run amok, and a werewolf is thrown in to boot! Crazy shit.
  • 9/20 Red Eye, ***1/2 Was pleasantly surprised.
  • 9/21 Appleseed, *** Lots of action, decent animation.
  • 9/26 Borat, **** Extremely vile... and hilarious. The audience was laughing their asses off and so was I.

OCTOBER
  • 10/01 Renaissance, **** Very much like the late 80s Heavy Metal mags. Good action and story. Character animation is a little lackluster but the backgrounds are great, stylistically speaking.
  • 10/05 Major Dundee, ***1/2 Host of rogues from the Civil War era are thrown together to accomplish a non-political mission in attempt to reclaim Apache kidnap victims. Movie has a great cast and some good action scenes. Decent script often touches on various social frictions between yankees, confederates and blacks during, yet outside of, the Civil War.
  • 10/10 Key Largo, ****
  • 10/10 Night Creatures (a.k.a. Captain Clegg), ***1/2
  • 10/11 The Evil of Frankenstein, ***1/2
  • 10/13 House of Sand and Fog **** Pretty damned depressing and grim, but very well done and Connelly and Kingsley turn in excellent performances.

NOVEMBER
  • 11/23 Oedipus Rex (1957), **** Basically a filmed stage play with a minimalistic but eerie set. It is very stylistic in that all the characters wear these fantastic, grotesque masks. All very Rod Serling-ish. The acting was fine if a little over the top (which is to be expected in stage plays).

T.V. sets completed in 2006
Prime Suspect, 3
Prime Suspect, 4
Prime Suspect, 5
Prime Suspect, 6 Excellent series.

7/11: Doctor Who - S14E5 - The Robots of Death -- 5/5 -- C'mon, like I wasn't gonna completely love it with that title and Tom Baker? Bitch, please.
7/12: Spaced - Series 1 -- 5/5 -- Excellent show, can't wait for more!
7/16: Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema -- 5/5 -- Very interesting documentary. Gave me more films to add to my burgeoning "to see eventually" list.
7/21: Doctor Who - S7E2 - Doctor Who and the Silurians -- 5/5 -- "Can humans make peace with their reptilian ancestors?" Yay for reptiles!
7/23: Doctor Who - S7E3 - The Ambassadors of Death -- 5/5 -- "A mad General unleashes killer astronauts from Mars." Seriously compelling plot, very cool soundtrack, sort of like a cross between a giallo soundtrack and Jethro Tull in places. Ah, the early 70s.
7/25: Naked Lunch -- 5/5
7/26: Doctor Who - S22E2 - Vengeance On Varos -- 5/5 -- "The Varosian economy depends on mining and torture movies." Loved the concept of this one, as it was fairly ahead of its time and the little maggot dude who kept laughing cracked me up!
7/28: Doctor Who - S7E4 - Inferno -- 5/5 -- "A dangerous experiment throws the Doctor into a doomed dimension."
7/29: Doctor Who - S8E1 - Terror Of The Autons -- 5/5 -- "The deadly plastic aliens return. This time as daffodils." The scarybigheaded Autons were creepy!
7/31: Doctor Who - S8E2 - The Mind of Evil -- 5/5 -- "Can the Keller Machine really cure all crime?" Well, apparently there were issues with that.

August:

8/4: The Evil Dead -- 5/5
8/4: Midnight Movies: From the Margin to the Mainstream -- 5/5 -- Interesting documentary!
8/5: Doctor Who - S8E3 - The Claws of Axos -- 5/5 -- "The Axons promise Earth a golden age of prosperity and big frogs."
8/7: Doctor Who - S8E4 - Colony In Space -- 5/5 -- "A sinister alien quarry hides the most powerful weapon in the universe."
8/12: Shadow of a Doubt -- 5/5
8/12: Marnie -- 5/5
8/12: Topaz -- 5/5
8/15: The Kissing Place -- 3.5/5 -- Fairly enjoyable in a hilarious Lifetime Movie sort of way.
8/22: With God on Our Side: George W. Bush and the Rise of the Religious Right in America -- 4/5 -- An eye-opener in many respects.
8/23: The Gift (2003) -- 4/5 -- Infuriating documentary on bugchasers, a must see.
8/24: Three...Extremes -- 4/5

September:

9/5: Doctor Who - S8E5 - The Dæmons -- 5/5 -- "The Master raises the Devil. The Doctor becomes a wizard." This had a great Wicker Man vibe to it. Definitely one with plenty of rewatch value!
9/6: Re-Animator -- 4/5
9/9: Open Water -- 4/5 -- Very disturbing film, hasn't lost its punch on second viewing.
9/18: Doctor Who - S9E1 - Day of the Daleks -- 5/5 -- "Terrorists from the future try to save the Earth from the Daleks." Slightly sleepy Daleks still make for a fun time.
9/19: A Nightmare On Elm Street, Part 2 -- 4.5/5 -- One of my favorites. Gotta love the Limahl poster on the wall.
9/20: Female Trouble -- 4/5 -- It made me crave a meatball sandwich.
9/22: Doctor Who - S9E2 - The Curse of Peladon -- 5/5 -- "Can Peladon escape the curse of its cruel god?" Oh my god, could the bouncy, giggly, hermaphroditic alien possibly be more adorable?

October:

10/2: Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell -- 4/5
10/2: Doctor Who - S9E3 - The Sea Devils -- 5/5 -- "A race of underwater reptiles start to attack shipping as the Doctor searches for a peaceful solution." Excellent episode, great Doctor/Master fight scene!
10/10: Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare -- 2.5/5 -- Wow, watching this film again after a decade or more really explained why I never saw that sequel more than a few times at most. I can't hate it, and it does have some good scenes, but damn, that cheese is ripe!
10/11: The Day After -- 4/5 -- Okay, I think Threads was actually better executed, but this one gets nostalgia points for inspiring two decades of nightmares. That has to count for something. Oddly, I thought I remembered more nuclear blast footage being shown on TV when I was a kid... perhaps it's been cut out courtesy of the Sci-Fi channel?
10/12: The Witching -- 3/5 -- Perhaps "Necromancy" was better? This was a bit muddled but still enjoyable viewing for me because hey... 70s witches! How can I complain?

(First viewings in bold, ratings are out of ten and a score of less than five means the movie was disappointing, from five onwards the movie is good, more than eight means a masterpiece)

01/01 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre II (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 6
- Horror-comedy that works and isn't stupid!
03/01 - Lethal Weapon II (dir. Richard Donner) - 4
- The first one's better.
04/01 - Return of the Living Dead IV: Necropolis (dir. Who Cares) - 4.5
- Mmh, brains-off -movie if there ever was one, but not tedious or very boring.
05/01 - Dark Water (dir. Walter Salles) - 4
- An exercise in tedium. Irrelevant.
05/01 - Moon 44 (dir. Roland Emmerlich) - 3
- Horrible script, inept direction and all-around terrible acting.
07/01 - Mad Max II - the Road Warrior (dir. George Miller) - 7
- Good nihilistic atmosphere and well-made in all aspects.
08/01 - Halloween 5 (dir. Dominique Othenin-Giraud) - 3.5
- Director is no good, some nice cinematography, great Pleasance.
09/01 - Dreamcatcher (story by Stephen King) - 2
- i do hate King's "ideas" and writings.
09/01 - il Terrificante Notte del Demonio (the Devil's Nightmare) - 5
- Not great but sympathetic and thoroughly enjoyable.
10/01 - Masters of Horror - the Fair-Haired Child (dir. Matt Greenberg) - 3.5
- Some nice moments but the ending ruined all.
10/01 - Lord of War (dir. Andrew Niccol) - 5
- Dragging bits, and i didn't like the comedy, but was partly very good.
11/01 - Aguirre - Wrath of God (dir. Werner Herzog) - with Commentary
- Got the Anchor Bay boxset, fine thing indeed.
12/01 - Woyzeck (dir. Werner Herzog) - 8
- A small and touching film, unexpected.
12/01 - the Satan Bug (story by Alistair MacLean) - 4.5
- Very typical MacLean-based movie.
13/01 - Friday the 13th V - the New Beginning - 2
- Simply the dumbest slasher i've ever seen.
13/01 - Friday the 13th VI - Jason Lives - 5
- Maybe the most sympathetic main characters in F13th movie ever.

14/01 - Mad Max III: Beyond Thunderdome (dir. George Miller) - 5
- Why does this turn into a family movie at half-way?
15/01 - the American Nightmare -documentary
- The directors' comments were interesting.
16/01 - Bridge over the River Kwai - 5
- Somewhat better than modern war-movies, but also western propaganda.
17/01 - Toolbox Murders (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 7
- Classic horror standing tall in the midst of irrelevant modern garbage.
18/01 - Toolbox Murders (dir. Tobe Hooper) - with producer's commentary
19/01 - Masters of Horror - Sick Girl (dir. Lucky McGee) - 6
- Deserving of the 'Masters' title, extremely well made and good script.
19/01 - Audition (dir. Takashi Miike) - with commentary
20/01 - Night of the Living Dead 30th Anniversary Edition (dir. George Romero) - 8
- Very scary. Now more complete than the original version.
21/01 - the Last Train from Gun Hill (dir. John Sturges) - 5
- By the numbers western.
22/01 - Masters of Horror - Pick Me Up (dir. Larry Cohen) - 2.5
- If i said what i thought of this, they'd put me in jail. Really.
24/01 - Land of the Dead (dir. George Romero) - 8
- Not one of the riff-raff.
25/01 - Escape from New York (dir. John Carpenter) - 7
- Just wish the beginning scene was edited into the movie, too.
25/01 - Puppet on a Chain (story by Alistair MacLean) - 2.5
- Rubbish; a formulaic propaganda "thriller".
26/01 - Gladiator - extended (dir. Ridley Scott) - 5
- Too dramatic and emphatic to be more than 'ok', almost vulgar.
27/01 - Land of the Dead (dir. George Romero) - with commentary
27/01 - Toolbox Murders (dir. Tobe Hooper) - with director's commentary
28/01 - Halloween 6 (dir. Joe Chappelle) - 2
- Bollocks.
29/01 - Return of the Living Dead - Rave to the Grave (dir. Dun No) - 4
- Unfortunately boring at times, other times acceptable brains-off entertainment.
30/01 - Masters of Horror - Haekel's Tale (dir. John McNaughton) - 4
- Despite some good ideas, bad acting and bad ideas took over.
31/01 - One on Top of the Other (dir. Lucio Fulci) - 6
- Competent and interesting giallo, but not as good as his later ones, somewhat dry.
31/01 - Escape from LA (dir. John Carpenter) - 6
- Great rollercoaster-ride.

01/02 - Gladiator (dir. Ridley Scott) - with Scott&Crowe commentary
02/02 - Escape from New York (dir. John Carpenter) - with Debra Hill's commentary
05/02 - Fantastic Voyage (feat. Donald Pleasance) - 6
- Ludicrous but charming.
08/02 - Saw II (dir. Darren Bousman) - 3
- Nothing i ain't seen before: Se7en+Cube+Cardplayer...plus terrible direction & colour scheme.
09/02 - Seven Blood-stained Orchids (dir. Umberto Lenzi) - 5
- Very much just by-the-numbers giallo, Italian cinema can be just as formulaic as Hollywood.
11/02 - Mortuary (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 7
- Genuine Hooper-madness again! i love this movie.
12/02 - When Eight Bells Toll (story by Alistair MacLean) - 5
- A decent thriller, Hopkins could actually act in those early days.
14/02 - Day of the Dead (dir. George Romero) - 8
- Gripping.
14/02 - Corpse Bride (dir. Tim Burton) - 6
- Partly excellent, partly not even charming.

17/02 - Phantom of the Paradise (dir. Brian de Palma) - 4
- Very clever, very well-made, but content-wise what horrible garbage.
18/02 - Mission Impossible (dir. Brian de Palma) - 5
- Doesn't avoid any action-movie blunders, yet well-directed.
19/02 - Escape from New York (dir. John Carpenter) - Carpenter&Russell commentary
24/02 - the Brood (dir. David Cronenberg) - 8
- Low-key, atmospheric, terrifying, intelligent...
24/02 - Day of the Dead (dir. George Romero) - Romero&crew commentary
25/02 - Nosferatu (dir. Werner Herzog) - 9
- Puts the Coppola-version in shame.
27/02 - Nosferatu (dir. Werner Herzog) - Herzog&Hill commentary
28/02 - the Abominable Dr. Phibes (dir. Robert Fuest) - 7
- Not just camp.
28/02 - Dr. Phibes Rises Again (dir. Robert Fuest) - 6

- Typical sequel, less thought and the jokes are bad, but still a lot of nice things, too.

02/03 - the Emperor and the Assassin (dir. Chen Kaige) - 7
- Epic, but narrative a little bit too broken.
03/03 - the Enforcer (feat. Clint Eastwood) - 5
- Dirty Harry -series going downhill.
03/03 - Lethal Weapon III (dir. Hmm..) - 5
- Silly little thing.
06/03 - Django (dir. Sergio Corbucci) - 4
- Nonsense.
10/03 - Hollow Man (dir. Paul Verhoeven) - 4
- Ok, where do i start? Kevin Bacon as a scientist?
12/03 - Phenomena (dir. Dario Argento) - 6
- My favourite from Dario. Fantastical atmosphere.
12/03 - Snake Eyes (dir. Brian dePalma) - 5
- Guess these kinds of movies don't get better than this.
13/03 - Basic (dir. John McTiernan) - 3
- Dysfunctional movie; bad actors and formulaic script. The ending is a choker.
14/03 - Starship Troopers (dir. Paul Verhoeven) - 6
- Extremely fun with tequila shots.
16/03 - the Merchant of Venice (dir. Michael Radford) - 7
- Rather impressive in all respects, even Al Pacino does a fine performance here.
17/03 - Fitzcarraldo (dir. Werner Herzog) - 9
- i usually can't stand uplifting movies, but this is just an artistic masterpiece.
18/03 - Ravenous (dir. Antonia Bird) - 6
- Works mostly very well, but is slightly uneven.
19/03 - Shaft (feat. Samuel Jackson) - 2
- Is this modern blaxploitation?
20/03 - Crash (dir. Paul Haggis) - 2
- Typical Oscar-winner. They'd put me in jail... i'll just say: total garbage.
21/03 - Lethal Weapon 4 (dir. Richard Donner) - 2
- Horrible sequel to a decent series. An excuse of a movie, advertising Chris Rock.
23/03 - Unforgiven (dir. Clint Eastwood) - 6
- Good western, not without shortcomings. Script could be better, and the whole is uneven.
26/03 - Black Hawk Down (dir. Ridley Scott) - 7
- One of the finest war-movies, but i would've preferred a level of realism in cinematography.
27/03 - Fitzcarraldo (dir. Werner Herzog) - commentary Herzog&producer
30/03 - das Boot (feat. Jurgen Prochnow) - 4
- Overrated; atmospheric but ultimately not epic at all.

01/04 - Undead (dir. Michael Spierig) - 6.5
- Actually pretty funny non-serious horror.
02/04 - Mission Impossible II (dir. John Woo) - 4
- Frivolous, just typical.
06/04 - Carnival of Souls (dir. Herk Harvey) - 7
- Fantastical suspense-horror.
09/04 - Drowning by Numbers (dir. Peter Greenaway) - 8
- Pure cinema, one of Greenaway's best.
09/04 - Pale Rider (dir. Clint Eastwood) - 5
- Uhh, misrepresented Christianity, but ok as a light western.
10/04 - Decalogue 1x10 (dir. Kieslowski) - 6
- A bit of more subtlety and ambiguity would suit this well.
11/04 - Masters of Horror - 1x13 - Imprint (dir. Takashi Miike) - 9
- Unbelievably good, plus the most horrifying thing i've ever seen.
11/04 - Face/Off (dir. John Woo) - 4
- Overrated & overblown, frivolous, boring, unbelievable...
13/04 - Hostel (dir. Eli Roth) - 2
- Modern, calculated, propaganda, mindless, easy, forgettable, just like Cabin Fever.
15/04 - Bitter Moon (dir. Roman Polanski) - 7
- Moving experience.
16/04 - a History of Violence (dir. David Cronenberg) - 9
- Unbelievable what he can make out of a almost typical script.
16/04 - Starship Trooper (dir. Paul Verhoeven) - director&writer commentary
21/04 - the Changeling (dir. Peter Medak) - 5
- Starts out well, but poor story. Overrated.
21/04 - the Dead Will Walk -documentary
22/04 - the Great Silence (dir. Sergio Corbucci) - 5
- Klaus Kinski steals the show, but very uneven movie. Good ending.
24/04 - Sin City - recut & extended (dir. Robert Rodriguez) - 6.5
- i like the original cut better, but good added scenes.
25/04 - 3000 Miles to Graceland (feat. Kevin Costner) - 4.5
- Useless movie, but Costner gives a good performance.
28/04 - Sin City (dir. Robert Rodriquez) - director&guests commentary
29/04 - Perfect World (feat. Kevin Costner) - 5
- Again good performance by Costner, dubious movie.
29/04 - Sin City (dir. Robert Rodriquez) - director&director commentary
30/04 - Strangers on a Train (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 5

01/05 - Watership Down (written by Richard Adams) - 7
- Wonderful animation, nice rabbits.

02/05 - Black Belly of the Tarantula (dir. Paolo Cavara) - 4
- One to forget...boring and unengaging. Highly typical.

- Gritty and chaotic.
05/05 - Shivers (dir. David Cronenberg) - 8
- Stylish, substantial, intelligent.
05/05 - North by Northwest (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 4
- Dry, superficial, boring, clinical, academic...Technical mastery no masterpieces makes.
06/05 - High Plains Drifter (dir. Clint Eastwood) - 6
- One of Clint's best movies.
08/05 - Femme Fatale (dir. Brian dePalma) - 4
- Modern Hitchcockian thriller? Stylish, but nonsensical, plus Rojmin can't act.
09/05 - Resident Evil (dir. Paul Anderson) - 5
- Bad characters and inane but very slick and sometimes even atmospheric.
09/05 - i Confess (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 4
- As ever, no sympathy from me.
12/05 - Dragonwyck (feat. Vincent Price) - 6
- Precursor to Price's Poe-movies, but very nice on its own.
12/05 - the House on Haunted Hill (dir. Don't Care) - 3
- Terrible modern mainstream "horror".
13/05 - the Weather Man (dir. Gore Verbinski) - 5
- Turgid and heavy-handed, thus very boring. Above all, turgid.
15/05 - Friday the 13th VII (feat. Jason) - 5
- Ok as these sequels go.
15/05 - the Wrong Man (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 5
- What makes this a little better than most is Henry Fonda.
18/05 - Dial M for Murder (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 5
- Ray Milland is great...
19/05 - Once Upon a Time in the West (dir. Sergio Leone) - 6
- Too many writers so very uneven, yet sympathetic.
20/05 - the Haunting (dir. Robert Wise) - 6
- A bit naive but very atmospheric and frightening.
21/05 - Eaten Alive (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 6
- Tobe Hooper-madness strikes again! Hilarious and terror-filled. Wonderful.
22/05 - the Fugitive (feat. Harrison Ford) - 5
- Don't mind watching something like this once in a blue moon.
25/05 - Vertigo (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 4
- Overhyped and overblown, i just don't get it about Hitchcock.
28/05 - Dawn of the Dead - remake (dir. Zack Snyder) - 4
- Uninspired, really bad "improvements".
29/05 - the Terminator (dir. James Cameron) - 6
- Great in a way, but ideologically totally evil.
31/05 - the Presidio (feat. Sean Connery & Meg Ryan) - 3
- Cheap garbage.

01/06 - a Quiet Place to Kill (dir. Umberto Lenzi) - 4
- Ok, this format is getting boring now.

04/06 - Bounce Ko-Gals (dir. Masato Harada) - 4
- Artificial, workman-like.
05/06 - Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (dir. Hmm) - 5
- Fun garbage, but Jason's "character" is a bad idea, his gestures pure plagiarism.
06/06 - Martin (dir. George Romero) - 9
- Fantastic masterpiece! Romero is a real genius.
08/06 - Bruiser (dir. George Romero) - 8
- This must be undervalued.
09/06 - Battle Royale Special Edition (dir. Kinji Fukasaku) - 7
- Didn't like this at first watching, now saw it with different eyes.
10/06 - Crimson Tide (dir. Tony Scott) - 5
- Turgid.
11/06 - Kamikaze Taxi (dir. Masato Harada) - 5
- Exactly the same as Ko-Gals; artificial and workman-like, no inspiration, no mastery.
23/06 - Patriot Games (dir. Phillip Noyce) - 4
- Unbearable drama.
26/06 - Mission Impossible III (feat. Tom Cruise) - 2
- Worthless sequel.

07/07 - Monkey Shines (dir. George Romero) - 8
- Another masterpiece from Romero, highly literate.
09/07 - a Few Good Men (dir. Rob Reiner) - 5
- Yet another "the system works, only a few individuals are evil"-propaganda movie.
10/07 - Minotaur (dir. Jonathan English) - 5
- Decent small-budget time-waster.
13/07 - Painful Deceptions -documentary (dir. Eric Hufschmid) - 7
- Very convincing.
14/07 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (dir. James Cameron) - 7
- Still a powerful action movie, less credible drama.
17/07 - Fahrenheit 911 (dir. Michael Moore) - 5
- i've no idea if Moore is just misguided or part of the problem.
19/07 - Deep Rising (dir. Stephen Sommers) - 3
- Horribly, horribly formulaic, turgid and "pointless".
21/07 - Cobra Verde (dir. Werner Herzog) - 8
- Uneven for a Herzog/Kinski-movie.
28/07 - Gattaca (dir. Andrwe Niccol) - 7
- Little bit heavy-handed but good overall.
31/07 - Birds (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - 6
- i like Tippi Hedren here, of course the msg of the movie is terrible.

05/08 - Once Upon a Time in America (dir. Sergio Leone) - 4
- Epic masterpiece? Dull obnoxious characters in a technical and well-shot movie.
11/08 - Last Man on Earth (feat. Vincent Price) - 8
- Literate and thoughtful "zombie" horror, pre-NOTLD!
14/08 - Gone in 60 Seconds (feat. Nicholas Cage) - 3
- One of Cage's lesser performances, movie itself turgid bs.
17/08 - Man Without a Memory (dir. Duccio Tessari) - 5
- Another run of the mill -giallo.
19/08 - Masters of Horror - Cigarette Burns (dir. John Carpenter) - 8
- Sophisticated horror, though forgiving some of the silliness in the script.
20/08 - the Crazies (dir. George Romero) - 7
- A good catastrophe movie with relevant social commentary.
27/08 - the Girl with a Pearl-Earring (dir. Public Enemy #1) - 3
- This kind of movies give a bad name to art. Artsie-fartsie.
30/08 - the Long Hair of Death (dir. Antonio Marghereti) - 6
- Extremely successfull atmospheric horror, just a bit "Italian" in a sense.

01/09 - Alien - theatrical cut (dir. Ridley Scott) - 6
- This theatrical release is disjointed.
02/09 - the Village (dir. Night M Shyamalan) - 6
- Partly excellent, but has some strange moralistic nonsense that in the end makes it shallow.
10/09 - Gangs of New York (dir. Martin Scorsese) - 4
- The kind of moviemaking i despise, pretentious and fallacious. Historical revisionism at its worst.
12/09 - Raising Cain (dir. Brian de Palma) - 4
- Also pretentious. Seems like de Palma is running out of ideas and resorts to trickery.
15/09 - the Fog (dir. John Carpenter) - 8
- Excellent lowkey horror, atmospheric and well written.
16/09 - the Fog - remake (dir. Dun No) - 2
- Modern, vacuous and shamelessly formulaic.
22/09 - the Fall of the House of Usher (dir. Roger Corman) - 9
- One of the most sophisticated and intelligent horror movies of all times.
25/09 - Master and Commander (dir. Peter Weir) - 4
- A costume party! Extremely pretentious and turgid. Downward, downward, downward...
28/09 - the Eroticist (dir. Lucio Fulci) - 6
- Fulci on top, outrageously hilarious comedy.
30/09 - Stagefright (dir. Michele Soavi) - 6
- Stylistic slasher.

01/10 - Pirates of the Caribbean (dir. Dun No) - 3
- Typical badly written cheap shallow comedy-stuff.
02/10 - Rabid (dir. David Cronenberg) - 6
- Good combination of "trash" and intellect.
03/10 - Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskerville (feat. Jeremy Brett) - 6
- More of a tv-thriller than a detective story, nice.
05/10 - Peeping Tom (dir. Michael Powell) - 4
- Haha, this is not a masterpiece nor intelligent nor even clever. Contrived.
07/10 - City of the Living Dead (dir. Lucio Fulci) - 7
- Nightmare terror...what an atmosphere of death, what imagery! Also depth.
09/10 - Dr. Who and the Daleks (feat. Peter Cushing) - 6
- Excellent comedy, but somewhat long for the contents.
11/10 - Besieged (dir. Bernardo Bertolucci) - 7
- The main musical piece overshadows everything else. Fantastic.
11/10 - the One (feat. Jet Li) - 2
- Unbelievable crap, and a ripoff to boot.
13/10 - i Walked with a Zombie (dir. Jacques Tourneur) - 7
- Charming and atmospheric.
13/10 - Freddie vs. Jason (no idea) - 5
- Some succesful frights, but graphics don't work.

14/10 - Tomb Raider (dir. Simon West) - 5
- Overblown, but i suppose it's acceptable cheese.
15/10 - Tomb Raider - the Cradle of Life (dir. Jan de Bont) - 4
- What is with all the destruction and mayhem? Crappy.
16/10 - City of the Living Dead - Katriona MacCollcommentary (dir. Lucio Fulci) - 3
- MacColl is an idiot, not understanding anything about the movie, human psyche, or the maestro Fulci.
17/10 - the Mangler (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 7
- Hooper-insanity all the way.
19/10 - Cape Fear (dir. J. Lee Thompson) - 5
- Better than the remake, but quite pointless.
23/10 - 911 Mysteries -documentary
- Bush behind it, you say?
24/10 - Where Eagles Dare (feat. Clint Eastwood) - 4
- Boring and silly propaganda-movie, as these old war-movies often are.
25/10 - Raw Meat (feat. Donald Pleasance) - 6
- A nice little movie, best thing of which is Pleasance's performance.
26/10 - Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (dir. Terence Fisher) - 3
- If i said what i think, they'd put me in jail...
27/10 - Halloween (dir. John Carpenter) - 8
- Seen this ten times and it's still effective.
28/10 - 13th Warrior (dir. John McTiernan) - 4
- Ruined by being made so badly, extremely disappointing.
30/10 - License to Kill (dir. John Glen) - 3
- One of the worst Bonds, not even feeling of 'fun'.
31/10 - Mortuary (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 7
- Once again succesfull horror-comedy craziness.
31/10 - Masters of Horror - 2x01 - the Damned Thing (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 7
- Excellent beginning for season 2, Hooper a bit more restrained than usual.

01/11 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the Beginning (dir. Jonathan Liebesman) - 3
- Modern...bad idea, bad script, badly written characters, hoaky visual style...
03/11 - Murder Rock (dir. Lucio Fulci) - 6
- Quirky and entertaining thriller, very nice and different.
04/11 - Sleepy Hollow (dir. Tim Burton) - 4
- Lessening the red-element in colour scheme is a cheap trick, not a visual style.
04/11 - Masters of Horror -documentary (host: Bruce Campbell)
- Some interesting interviews.
05/11 - Masters of Horror - 2x02 - Family (dir. John Landis) - 3
- Worse than his Deer Woman. Stupid.
06/11 - Arctic Heat (dir. Renny Harlin) - 1
- This is purely idiotic, nothing but propaganda.
07/11 - Meltdown (feat. Jet Li) - 6
- Extremely goodnatured and entertaining.
08/11 - Murder Rock -commentary
10/11 - La Luna (dir. Bernardo Bertolucci) - 8
- Touching, humane and honest. Natural and benevolent, very good for humanity.
11/11 - Die Hard 2 (dir. Renny Harlin) [/B] - 2
- Another idiotic Harlin-movie; cliched, formulaic and vacuous.
13/11 - the Man from Tokio (dir. Seijun Suzuki) - 7
- Highly stylized story-telling, and it works very nicely, not style for style's sake.
14/11 - Masters of Horror - 2x03 - V Word (dir. Ernest Dickerson) - 4
- Scary at times, and the Doom-aspect worked well in places, but terrible "story".
16/11 - Ikiru (dir. Akira Kurosawa) - 9
- Though not as good as Tolstoy's novel, very fine.
17/11 - Ghosts of Mars (dir. John Carpenter) - 7
- Subtle script and stylish execution, too good for GP.
18/11 - Devil's Advocate (feat. Al Pacino) - 4
- Turgid script, but the movie works for a long time.
18/11 - Masters of Horror - 2x04 - Sounds Like (dir. Brad Anderson) - 5
- Deteriorating into just another "horror" anthology series like Twilight Zone
20/11 - Live and Let Die (dir. Guy Hamilton) - 4
- Mmm, typical.
21/11 - Casino Royale (dir. ...) - 3
- Russian montage. Exactly in style of MI3. Convoluted.
24/11 - Doom - the movie (dir. ...) - 6
- Very entertaining.
25/11 - Masters of Horror - 2x05 - Pro-Life (dir. John Carpenter) - 8
- Extremely well made and engaging.
25/11 - Red Dragon (dir. Brett Ratner) - 6
- My favourite Lecter-movie.

01/12 - Texas Chain Saw Massacre (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 8
- Never fails, terrifying as Hell.
02/12 - Masters of Horror - 2x06 - Pelts (dir. Dario Argento) - 7
- Best thing he has done for years.
04/12 - Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring (dir. Peter Jackson) - 5
- Very very commercial.
07/12 - Legend of Hell House (dir. John Hough) - 4
- Silly metaphysical movie, without heads or tails.
08/12 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (dir. Tobe Hooper) - 7
- Succesful horror-comedy, extreme craziness.
10/12 - Lord of the Rings - Two Towers (dir. Peter Jackson) - 5
- Relativelly entertaining but they could've done it more seriously.
11/12 - Saw III (dir. Darren Bousman) - 4
- Best of the Saws, highly convoluted but the ending was better than usual.
16/12 - Die Another Day (dir. Lee Tamahori) - 3
- Tired.
17/12 - Lord of the Rings - the Return of the King (dir. Peter Jackson) - 5
- Viggo talks like the american president.
18/12 - Bird People of China (dir. Takashi Miike) - 8
- Drama without convolution or heavyhandedness, lighthearted and well-meaning.
22/12 - Batman Forever (dir. Tim Burton) - 2
- Tedium. The worst Batman-movie. Low-class humour.
24/12 - Nightmare Before Christmas (dir. Tim Burton) - 7
- Christmas-special.
26/12 - Gremlins (dir. Joe Dante) - 1
- Sickening, couldn't bear to watch.
28/12 - Resident Evil: Apocalypse (dir. Alexander Witt) - 5
- Modern, way too fast, but not unenjoyable.
29/12 - Alien 3 (dir. David Fincher) [/B] - 6
- Love the atmosphere.

Ok billy, maybe I'll last longer than I did last year.

BOLD = First time viewing. I don't really do the rating thing.

*** WARNING - May Contain Spoilers ***

January

1st - Rock 'n' Roll High School - This is the 'Rock On Edition' which came out in December... I hadn't heard anything about the new release so when I saw it pop up on the shelf I had to buy it immediately. I have not seen this movie in years, and oh man I have watched it three times already today. I love it, it's so funny... too many things to list... just a few... the giant rat at the concert, Johnny throwing the pizza at the poster of Mick Jagger backstage, "Who are the Ramoneys?".... too many to list! Great hilarious movie to start off the new year!

3rd - The Grapes of Death - Pretty good zombie flick, yet not really a zombie flick. Some good gooey gore and cheesy gore effects (the decapitation ) Nice dream-like pacing too... it plays out like a bad dream. What I really like about these films are the beautiful country settings. The settings reminded me of other films like Tombs of the Blind Dead and Don't Torture a Duckling.

9th - The New Barbarians - Cheesy 80's Casio keyboard soundtrack. YAY! Craptacular post apocalyptic vehicles covered in tin foil. YAY! Fred "The Hammer" Williamson exploding the bad guys with detonating arrowheads. YAY! Giovanni "BOB" Frezza!! YAY!!! Great use of dummies in the death scenes! YAY!!! Futuristic ass rape! YA...WHAT!!?! I enjoyed the movie overall... the sound on the DVD sucked hard though!

10th - Deep Purple Live In Concert 72/73 - Concert videos of the famous mkII lineup (Blackmore, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Lord). B&W concert from Copenhagen, Denmark in 1972, nothing short of amazing. This was their hey-day, doing material from the famous "Machinehead" album. Also color concert footage from New York, May 1973, on the In Concert show. And there's also an extra on the disc, the mkIII lineup (David Coverdale & Glenn Hughes replacing Ian Gillan & Roger Glover) performing "Burn" at the 1974 California Jam. I'm not too big on the mkIII lineup, but it's still great to see the footage.

11th - Death Race 2000 - Very cool! Very cool! The cars were a LOT cooler than the New Barbarians, that's for sure! Some great dark and outlandish humor. LOVED the old folks home segment! The ending was good, but rather predictable. Interesting to see a few of the actors in here went on to play roles in Rock n Roll High School a couple years later.

12th - Long Weekend - I really enjoyed this. Had nice slow building suspense and very creepy atmosphere. Goes way beyond your regular animals attack movie. Great scenery of woods/beaches/oceans too. Synapse did a great job on this. It looks awesome and sounds awesome as well!

13th - Boondock Saints - GREAT flick. Action packed, and funny. Awesome acting. I loved "Funny Man" Roc. I can't believe he's never acted before or since, although I read the role was actually made specifically for him by the writer/director, as they are friends. Dafoe was great as the gay FBI detective, and Flanery/Reedus made AWESOME brothers. If you haven't seen it, DO SO NOW!

14th - Final Destination - I enjoyed this quite a bit. I like the whole premise, death having a scheme, and cheating death. Pretty good kills with a touch of gore. The only thing I didn't like was "death" seemed to have a little too much personality & power... like when "death" made the water recede after Tod's death to make it look like a suicide....

15th - Shock Waves - Now THIS is how a Nazi zombie (well, undead) movie should be done! Great make-up by Alan Ormbsy, creepy music, spooky undead Nazis, nice Peter Cushing performance, etc, etc, etc! A couple parts actually made me jump too, haven't had that happen in a long time. Blows Zombie Lake out of the water! (No pun intended)

19th - Beyond the Darkness (Buio Omega) - I really dug it... Sick and creepy story, gore, cannibalism, nekkidness, great Goblin score, awesome late 70's dancing..... what more could you ask for? Oh, and Franca Stoppi is hot... in a manly kind of.... nevermind.

22nd - Dolemite - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! ! AWESOME!

22nd - Private Parts - A Classic. I love Howard Stern. I have ever since I used to watch the Channel 9 show when I was younger. Hearing the show on Sirius recently has really raised my interest too!

24th - The Black Sabbath Story Vol. 1 - Documentary featuring interviews with band members and lots of live footage. Gotta love the masters of doom!

24th - The Furious Monk From Shaolin - Average old school chop-socky from 1974. Not anything special in the fight scene department, but the the movie as a whole kept my interest.

26th - Superfriends V2 D1 Ep1 - Rokan: Enemy From Space - Ahh.. classic Superfriends. This is Volume 2, with the addition of lame-asses Zan & Jayna and Gleek the monkey, and without racial friendly superheroes Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, or Samurai (all made just for the show I believe), legit heroes Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman, and the badass Legion of Doom. Oh, Jayna took the form of a seagull and Zan took the shape of an ice gondola so the dumbass monkey could ride along as the seagull Jayna carried them.

26th - Superfriends V2 D1 Ep2 - The Demons of Exxor - Jayna - form of serpent, Zan - shape of ice giant.

26th - Bob Marley & the Wailers - LIVE! at the Rainbow - Classic 1977 concert from London. Good stuff.

28th - The Children - Super cheese-tastic! Had to get the DVD after I realized what movie it was and remembered seeing it quite a few times when I was young. Great cheese, some unintentional laugh-out-loud scenes, and a beautiful ending! The less than perfect print of the Troma DVD only enhanced my viewing, taking me back to the good ol' days! Now I know why I hate those loser freaks at the mall with the black painted nails so much!

31st - Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS - Mmmmmm... Exploitation! Tons of blood, gore, T&A, sex, revenge, and nazis! Everything that makes a good exploitation movie! Admit it, Dyanne Thorne was still friggin' SMOKIN' for being in her 40's!

February

1st - Superfriends V2 D1 Ep3 - Battle at the Earth's Core - Jayna - form of polar bear, Zan - shape of ice sled, Gleek - fucking annoying, Robin - worthless, Aquaman - gay.

2nd - Heavy Metal - The animated movie. I hadn't seen this for years and years, so it was like watching it again for the first time. Besides, I had only seen it on cable in the past so I'm sure it was chopped to hell. Good mix of sci-fi and fantasy, but it seemed to be all over the place. I prefer Bakshi's Wizards and Fire & Ice. Heavy Metal was good though and kept my interest throughout.

3rd - Wedding Crashers - Very funny! I'm not a huge Vince Vaughn fan, and I didn't know if the Owen Wilson/Vaughn duo would work well.... but I was surprised. Quite a few laugh out loud spots. Walken was great as always, and the "Chaz" scenes were great! "MOM! THE MEATLOAF?? FUCK!!"

4th - 40 Year Old Virgin - AWESOME. Carell ruled, as well as pretty much the whole supporting cast. Too many laugh out loud spots to count, and at LEAST three 'laughed till I cried' scenes, especially the waxing scene! Wouldn't you love to work at their electronics store? KELLY CLARKSON!

10th - Dio: Evil Or Divine - Live In New York City - Love me some Dio. Still bringin' the classic metal. Shitty DVD video quality-wise. Awesome DVD music and performance-wise.

12th - Kung Fu Hustle - Eh. It was good, but I wasn't blown away. I'm really not big on the cartoony aspect. Gimme old school chop-socky anyday over this.

13th - Superfriends V2 D1 Ep4 - Sinbad and the Space Pirates - YAY! PIRATES FROM SPACE! Hey! They look just like pirates from Earth! You'd think Space Pirates would have kickass Space Pirate ships. Nope. They look just like old timey Earth pirate ships, except with rocket boosters. Jayna - form of pelican, Zan - shape of water. WATER? WAY TO USE YOUR IMAGINATION, ASSHOLE! Gleek managed to clone (pre-sliced in the peel) bananas. Also, it's fun to listen to Casey Kasem talk like a pirate. Even if he still sounds exactly like Robin.....who is still worthless.

14th - The Hearse - I enjoyed it. Felt like a made for TV horror flick... Had some creepy spots that worked quite well... others seemed rather redundant. The ending seemed pretty rushed though... almost like it was thrown together very quickly.

16th - Weasels Rip My Flesh - Grade Z hilarious trash. Watch it. Your life will not be complete until you see this waste of 1 hour and 5 minutes, which could probably have been edited down to 30 minutes and still been as "effective." Hellspawn's grandaddy!

21st - Eat My Dust! - Fun little 'race 'em, chase 'em, smash 'em, crash 'em' movie with Ron Howard. Not spectacular, but worth the $3.99!

23rd - Dead & Breakfast - Good for what it was. I found it entertaining, but not fantastic. Had a few laughs. But mainly... mmmmmm Portia!

24th - Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror - Oh my, why did I wait so long to see this? It was awesomely cheesy! The zombies looked good, and there was some nice gore... but Peter Bark takes the cake for freakyness! He gives "Bob" Giovanni Frezza a run for the money! "Mama, this cloth smells of death!"

26th - Class of 1984 - Wow. Great movie. Very brutal and violent. I really enjoyed the story, and watching the teacher slowly snap was great. And the ending! Great climax with the orchestra playing below... Roddy McDowall had a very emotional and moving performance as well. I'm not really into Extras on a disc, but I HAD to watch the documentary in the extras after I watched the movie, so you know it was good! Watch it!

March

1st - Gone In 60 Seconds (1974) - First hour... *yawn* Last 38 minutes... yay! CrashSmashBreak! Shitty acting and plot, but great car chases and crashes. Unfortunately they replaced the original soundtrack with really shitty "modern" sounding chase music.... even in parts of the movie that shouldn't even have background music! I have never seen/heard the movie with the original soundtrack, but I bet it used to have a great "CHiPs" feel to it... not any longer.

4th - American Pop - Another great Bakshi flick... watch it! Especially if you're a music fan!

7th - The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior - He sucked in the ring... I never liked the guy, and always knew he was a whacko, but never really to what extent. This is pretty much a slanderfest, but interesting just the same. You make your own bed, you lie in it. No one really has anything good to say about the guy. The general consensus is that he cared nothing about the business, and only about himself. Interesting to hear "inside" views about the Warrior and his career from some of the business' greats.

9th - Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters - Almost a modern "Mr. Vampire" but without 99% of the humor element. The first half seemed a little slow paced to me, but the last half is where it really picked up and I thought it was exciting. Some great action swordplay sequences... If you like hopping zombies and chinese vampires, then give this one a go.

10th - Walk the Line - I've been a Johnny Cash fan for as long as I can remember, growing up with parents that owned a bar with a classic country filled juke. Needless to say I really liked this movie. I thought Reese Witherspoon did a great job acting, and I hated her before this movie! Phoenix & Witherspoon sang very well on the soundtrack also. If you're a fan of country music, or music in general, you should watch this.

19th - The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - See here.

21st - Lord of the Rings (1978) - This of course being the Ralph Bakshi animated version. I enjoyed it, but after seeing the Peter Jackson films, nothing will ever compare. I like the RotoScoping, but I really think they overused it in this one. Like I said, I enjoyed it, but it's probably my least favorite Bakshi effort.

23rd - Cabin Fever - Eh... I wasn't too impressed. Was it supposed to be serious or humorous? The combination didn't really work for me. Especially the harmonica scene... to far-out unbelievable. Also Jeff's "I DID IT! I'M ALIVE!" scene was way to obvious... geeee... what will happen here??? The humorous parts that I DID enjoy though were "PANCAKES!" and the 'nigga' (*gasp!* yes I said it!) scene at the end. So-so film I guess... I didn't fall asleep, so I guess that's good.

26th - Cemetary Man - A friend of mine let me borrow an old VHS of this. I can't remember the last time I watched an actual video tape! Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Some genuinely funny dark humor, gore, and loads of symbolism. To be honest, I really didn't understand it. I read a very good explaination on the IMDB boards (of all places!) that really made it sink in. After reading that it made the movie so much better! If you wanna read it, you can do so here. It might clear things up!

27th - The Ghastly Ones - Ghastly indeed! But what do you expect for something that SWV puts out. Three sisters and their husbands must spend three nights in their childhood home before they find out who inherits it. Two creepy maids and a toothy hunchback help add to this monstrosity. Anyway, a hooded stalker is creeping around killing everyone off. Some hilariously bad gore, unintentionally funny dialog, crew members visible, and a scene where you can hear the director yellling. It was hard to watch, but enjoyable in a... car crash kind of way. If you're into SWV then give it a shot. You know what to expect.

28th - The Long Island Cannibal Massacre - Another piece of Schiff by Nathan Shit. Err... Piece of shit by Nathan Schiff. Hilarious over the top gore... Non-existant acting... wacky twists... gut-bustingly funny scenes and dialog... for example: A police officer (obviously... cop uniform, gun, badge, no doubt about it...) has a guy at gunpoint up against a van: Guy: What are you, a policeman? Cop: No, I'm Batman! Basically a guy hires 2 thugs to kill people so he can feed the flesh to his father who has some leprosy type condition and needs the flesh to live. When you first see the father, he looks like a toasted coconut marshmallow. And then at the end he looks like a giant avacado. If you like your cheese on a bed of cheese with a side of cheese and cheese for dessert, then you STILL might not be able to handle all the cheese here! I will say though, the ending is quite sick and twisted and rather disturbing! IF you MAKE it that far!

April

1st - Satan's Children - It's movies like this that make me love Something Weird Video. Awesome 70's drive-in crap about a kid who hates his home life, runs away, gets ass-raped, and then mixed up with a satanic cult. Highlight would be when he escapes from the cult compound and makes it all the way home in nothing but his underwear. He walks in the house and his sister and father act like there's nothing really out of the ordinary!

3rd - Don't Look Now - Pretty good 70's horror starring Donald Sutherland. Starts out with a pretty powerful scene. Later in the movie you get to see a lot of Sutherland's ass. A little predictable, but I enjoyed it for that 70's feeling it has... kind of like a Rosemary's Baby/Omen/Sentinel type vibe. Check it out if you like those.

20th - Iron Monkey - After getting moved into a new apartment, I started back in the swing of things by watching this. A great modern kung fu flick. Awesome action and choreography with bits of humor. Watch for the final battle on the flaming poles!

24th - Petey Wheatstraw: The Devil's Son-In-Law - Holy crap was I cracking up. Much better than Dolemite in my opinion. A MUST SEE if you like Blaxploitation comedy. SHO NUFF!

25th - Dead Zone - Just wonderful. What can you say about Walken? Martin Sheen gives a great, albeit short perfomance as a greedy politician also.

May

1st - Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - Awesome. Great performance, and a great look into the mind of a killer.

4th - Dead Again - Mystery/Thriller that kept me interested throughout with a few comedic elements thrown in. The girlfriend wanted me to watch this with and I'm glad I did. Not my usual fare, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

10th - Tarkan vs. the Vikins - My first introduction to Turkish pop cinema.... and I LOVED it! Awesome cheese, hilarious costumes, totally unbelieveable effects.... all made this awesome! I loved Kurt, the Octopus, and the trampoline torture! I'll certainly be seeking out more Turkish cinema now!

12th - Gargoyles - One of my all time favorite made-for-tv horror films. I remember watching this many times as a kid. The gargoyle costumes rule. Sure it's got some silly parts, but the nostalgia factor really helps it hold up for me.

17th - The Hills Have Eyes 2 - Two words: DOG FLASHBACK! Pretty crappy, but that doesn't take away any of my enjoyment. Boy that girl can sure get out of the way of danger pretty well for being blind!

20th - Benchwarmers - Cute... that's about it. A couple spots got a laugh out of me...

25th - Four of the Apocalypse - I've had this DVD forever but always held off from watching it. Maybe because I tried watching Conquest once, and it wasn't agreeing with me, so I didn't want to give any Fulci non-horror a chance. Well I'm glad I finally watched this. I really enjoyed it. I really started to feel for the four... I really enjoyed the scene where the baby is born and Stubby leaves him for the men in the town to raise. Bunny was hot. Chaco was an awesome villan. Anyone for a Clem-kabob?

June

6th - Date Movie - I didn't even finish it. I want that wasted time back.

6th - The Omen (2006) - Carbon copy of the original. Stick with the original, although the decapitation scene in the remake is pretty good.

7th - Grandma's Boy - Fucking hilarious. Why wasn't this released in theatres? A MUCH better Happy Madison production than Benchwarmers.

7th - Artie Lange - It's the Whisky Talkin' - I wasn't too thrilled by his stand-up routine, but the extras were good. I'll stick to listening to him chime in on the Stern show. FIYAH!

7th - The Waiting - Pretty grossly funny. I thought it was good, but not as good as everyone told me it was. The rap video in the credits was hilarious though. THE GOAT!

8th - Genghis Blues - Awesome documentary about blues musician Paul Pena going to the asian country of Tuva to compete in a throatsinging competition. I highly recommend this!

9th - Enter the Dragon - Possibly the greatest martial arts movie of all time. My favorite Bruce Lee flick. Plus John Saxon & Jim Kelly!! Bolo too!!! Check out the documentary on the extras disc of the special edition!

12th - Kelly's Heroes - Very entertaining Clint Eastwood war/action/comedy flick about some outcast WWII soldiers making their way to some hidden German gold bars. Great performances by Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland too.

15th - Final Destination 2 - This movie sucked. Some of the deaths were good, but overall it made me feel like I lost some IQ points.

17th - SLC Punk - Very cool and funny movie. Another recommendation!

18th - Thriller: A Cruel Picture - I watched the version without the hardcore scenes. A Weird combination of art and revenge/exploitation, but I thought it was pretty cool. The training scenes reminded me of some kind of weird kung-fu story hybrid. I especially liked the fight/shooting scenes in slow motion.

Between then and September 12th, in no particular order!

War of the Worlds (2005)
