Never knew this film had that many versions and extra scenes (imdb). The Keep is not one of my favorite Michael Mann flicks but it's pretty entertaining , the "creature" looked very cool and the Tangerine Dream score wasn't bad either. This needs to be put out on DVD, even though I'll doubt Paramount would ever release a special edition
This is on my to see list. I love Michael Mann's films, and Tangerine Dream were a great band, so I should get something out of this film. I think Paramount will release this, but given that Mann hates supplements, I doubt we'll see anything other than the film on the DVD.
Yeah, your right. Hence the "Ali" disc, ugh. Too bad though, The Keep's extra scenes would have been interesting to watch.
Amazingly I have never seen the Keep so imagine my delight when I find out it's on the tv over xmas ( Sky Cinema ) unfortunatley I was rather tired that night and managed to fall asleep 10 mins before it started and slept through the whole thing, so a DVD copy would be most welcome.:sleepy:
Read about stars and cars, play electric guitars, cops that work hard patrolin' the boulevard, the heavyweight champ in his craziest bout. Books...Check em out. Books...Check em out. At your local library.
Sounds like an interesting flick. I noticed that actors Gabriel Byrne (as Capt. Sean Murphy on Ghost Ship (2002) and Alberta Watson (as Lauren Murphy on Hackers (1995) was is this movie THE KEEP so I will keep my eye out for this one. I never recalled that I watched this one due to the reviews I was reading about it at IMBD, but it seems to me that this can be a keeper when it comes out on DvD. Does anyone know the DvD release date yet?
If you see the movie on its own, you will probably like it. If you read the series of books, then see the movie - you will probably HATE it. That is the situation for me, anyway. Too bad the books (most of them) are long out of print. Makes them quite hard to come by.
Actually I read somewhere that it was supposed to be released this year but Paramount pushed it back to await involvement from Mann himself. The speculation was that he would oversee the transfer and even re-edit it to be more in line with his original vision. I think I read this over at HTF, but I can't remember and I have a hang-over the size of John Carpenter's bald spot so I can't bother to verify it. Mann is supposedly known for constantly revisiting his old movies.
I think the Tangerine Dream synth scores are entirely inappropriate for period pieces. No problem with the music itself though, it works for modern day settings like NEAR DARK or MIRACLE MILE.
Thanks for the heads up y2d. And I always thought Mann didn't care about his movies being released on DVD ("Ali") ...
Well, they way I read it it's supposed to be more of a thing where Mann re-edits smaller scenes changing how the films lay out. Like Manhunter for instance, where he changed around a couple of scenes both for the first release and then the second, if I'm not mistaken. I think I also read that he did want to edit Ali in some way for the DVD release. I dunno, it's just a recollection of tidbits read here and there as I really like Mann and try to snip up every little bit of info or curiosa I can about the Man(n).
Like I said, I have no problem with the music itself, but it just doesn't work for films like THE KEEP or LEGEND. It's not the right mood for a film set during WWII. It's as unsettling to me as if Spike Lee replaced all the music in DO THE RIGHT THING with bagpipes.
"The Adversary Cycle" series by F. Paul Wilson was awesome. It was hella-difficult to get a hold of copies as they are out of print (with the exception of "the Tomb") These are the books: THE KEEP THE TOMB THE TOUCH REBORN REPRISAL NIGHTWORLD I really enjoyed how most of the books had absolutely nothing to do with eachother until the last couple started tieing it all together. I haven't seen the movie, but if it's anything like the book it'd be really sweet.
