I own Pink Flamingos on DVD, and I actually enjoy it. I also own Female Trouble and Polyester. I know I will get some flack for this, but the movies are actually pretty funny, especially Pink Flamingos, and the Egg Lady, who happens to also be in a John Mellencamp video from the early 80s, and the song was called This Time.
Um, ok. The egg lady is one thing, but... Spoiler rape with chickens, tranny bj's, puckering of guys assholes and eating fresh dogshit just to name a few things is not my idea of entertainment. But hey, I'm not here to judge - enjoy!
MP, I have Pink Flamingos on DVD, but I know those things you list are in there, so it still sits in shrink wrap on my shelf.
Nah, one of these days I'll have to watch it, as I admire and respect John Waters and Divine (recently saw a biographical film on Divine, and it was very good). At some point, I'll have to watch their most notorious film. Although a lot of hardcore fans say Female Trouble is better, and I enjoy that movie quite a bit. I guess it doesn't get as much ink as Pink Flamingos because it doesn't have.....it doesn't have....oh, just click on Mutilated Prey's spoiler box.
Can't say I didn't warn ya I was giggling a bit at the ridiculousness in the beginning, I will admit. Egg lady, the bad acting, that 70's California low-budget "je ne sais quoi" - sure. However, when the items mentioned above starting happening I was disappointed and confused - lol.
When I was young, Pink Flamingos was a rite of passage. It was one of those mythical beasts that you simply just had to watch to prove your worth. I can actually still remember the night that me and a bunch of my fellow teens rented it. Such good times. Surprised and happy to hear that it still has the power. For what it's worth, Female Trouble is probably Waters' best and funniest movie. The "shocks" are more good-natured than they are with Flamingos and the social commentary is a bit more focused. If you remotely found even parts of Flamingos entertaining, like "No one sends you a turd and expects to live" then I'd still highly recommend giving Female Trouble a look.
I watched Pink Flamingos for the first (and last) time when I was 13, renting it from a local Mom and Pop VHS rental place. It left scars and stunted my emotional growth for years, if not longer. Even now, some nights I wake up in the dark and can hear the screaming of the chickens.
Rite of passage to what? Being an aggressive hardcore tranny? I Spit on your Grave was more of a childhood rite if passage for young teens in my town. This is the kind of thing that would have gotten us burned at the stake! I would have been emotionally scarred too at such a young age!
Desperate Living is my favorite John Waters movie. It doesn't have all of the shocking elements of Pink Flamingos but it's still so ridiculous and over the top that it's a must watch.
Desperate Living is my favourite Waters film as well. "You lazy bitch! I'm out working my tail off all day, and you're in there fuckin' MIDGETS!"
The police officer is my favorite character. "Ah, these are from Bloomingdales! You've got good taste!" "What are you hogs looking at?!?"
I also think Desperate Living is Waters most entertaining film. I saw this as well as Pink Flamingos theatrically. "who threw that? God damn it." "you have a certain odor about you." "let me sink my fangs into her."
