While building your collection what most determines your buying habits and what type of collection are you trying to achieve.

Kind of a combo between the first two options. I originally started out wanting a history of horror films, but now almost a decade later I'm more interested in films I'll watch more than once. There are some films that, while being classics and important stepping stones for the genre, I have little interest in acquiring for my collection, like I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE or LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. I'm not really into rape films.

I picked the "70s and 80s movies" option not because I strictly buy movies under that category but those are the ones I tend to enjoy and purchase more than others.

I voted for: "I want mainly films I will watch often."

But the main goal of my DVD collection is to just be the films I think are the absolute best horror films from the periods in horror that are relevant to when my taste was formed. Which is basically, color only, and Rosemary's Baby to whatever horror films are even watchable from '99 to today (not many). With a few exceptions from the 50's and 60's.

It's small and that's the way it will stay. I'm up to about 315-320 and I'm almost completely satisfied. Just maybe 10, 12 more DVD's and it'll be the collection I really want it to be, save for a few special editions I want to see that haven't been released yet.

Yeah I know - but I don't expect the editions I'd be willing to buy of the movies that deserve better editions...to get better editions. At least, not before Blu-Ray. So hey, until I go to Blu-Ray (which I still don't see myself doing, but I'm not putting entirely out of the realm of possibility), I only need about 15 at the most and that's it.

I just like having a massive collection and buy anything that interests me, whether it be a classic must own film, or a film that I just love to watch. I am very open when it comes to film, and try to check out everything, whether it be a black and white classic, or a 80's forgotten cheesy slasher. Anytime we have get togethers and watch films, it's at my house so... most of them get lots of use. And a lot of time I'll watch a film and not love it, and then over time it will become a favourite so it's hard to judge a film on its first viewing.

It's probably an addiction, but I would never buy a movie that I hated, although it's rare for me to find a movie that I dislike haha. I still have yet to pick up all the cannibal and rape films though, even if they are important films, I don't know if I could watch them. They are on my "Want Lists" though so I'm sure one day if I find them for a good price, I'll probably pick them up and make myself watch them at least once.

Pretty much sums it up for me. I just want a nice collection of movies I enjoy. I don't own or have a million movies. Still the few hundred I have bring me hours on end of joy. I will not buy something or anything just for the sake of being cool. I only buy what I like my way or the highway!

Little bit of everything really, so I guess the first choice best describes me.

I'm collecting on 5 fronts or so, but with one exception all are limited to movies that I enjoy or will definitely watch more than once
    1. zombie movies (I'm skipping the really terrible ones, but have about 25)
    2. "best" horror films (things like the exorcist, psycho, or halloween)
    3. cannibal movies (limited to about 10 - just the 'good' gory ones)
    4. asian extreme (particularly Hong Kong cat. III from the early 90s; but no particular defining characteristic for me, other than being: 'something I enjoy', 'asian' and, well, 'extreme')
    5. French Fantastique (including horror, sci-fi, and fantasy) - going all the way back there are fewer than 500 (depending on how the category is defined); I have about 12% so far... this will take me a long time to finish, if I ever do..

and then there are a bunch of DVDs that I own just because I like the movies, but don't form a coherent (or intended) collection

MAN... I'm sorry if it seems like I'm singling you out, I'm not... Will everyone stop calling Last House on the Left a rape movie. It's not. It features some rape scenes, but they are pretty short and fit into the overall landscape of horrors on display in the movie as much or less as the individual killing, humilation, and torture scenes all-throughout.

    End of mini-rant.

World Domination. It's an extremely complex and elaborate plan full of intricate subtleties and mind-bending deceit.

I never mentioned Last House once! ...Although I was thinking it, so I'll give you this one. ;)

And to be fair, I haven't seen it, but anytime I hear it mentioned, that is usually the first thing that comes up. So although it may not be a rape film, that seems to be one of the most powerful aspects of it. But again, I can't say anything until I have seen it.

Nope. The parents wanted revenge over the killing of their daughter. How did they know about her being raped?

I went with "mainly 70's/80's horror films", but the first option of having a history is somewhat true as well.
