Mickey (Bill Skarsgard) and Jules (Maika Monroe) are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret, and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners (Jeffrey Donovan, Kyra Sedgwick) who will do anything to keep it from getting out.

Gunpowder & Sky will be releasing this dark comedy home invasion horror in the fall.

No trailer at this time, but there is a clip from the movie available.

I have a ticket to an advanced screening next week.

I might check that out since Maika Monroe is in it. She was awesome in It Follows.

I saw Villains at a midnight screening last night.

I liked the movie, but I didn't love it. The cast is great, especially Kyra Sedgwick (also terrific in The Edge Of Seventeen, which I re-visited last week). The movie also has a really cool premise, but I didn't feel the movie made the most of it. A big complaint of mine during the torture-porn craze is that we got a bunch of boring movies of people tied to chairs. This isn't a torture film, but there's maybe a bit too much of "people tied to chairs" here. Even during these stretches, the cast manages to keep it afloat. Nearly the entire movie is these characters in a single suburban home, so I guess there's only so much you can do?

Since the movie doesn't push the premise much further than it is required to, it ends up feeling like something we've all seen before. I suppose the fresh tilt here is the movie's deadpan quirkiness. There's definitely a dark sense of humor here, but it's always played with a completely straight-face.

This certainly isn't a bad watch, but I don't think it's one that will make a huge long-lasting impression. This was the festival screening I was most looking forward to, and I ended up enjoying Extra Ordinary (which I had seen right before) way more.

Gunpowder & Sky is releasing Villains in theaters on September 20th. It says nationwide theatrical, but there's not even a trailer yet.
