I'll never understand why some people prefer Death Proof over Planet Terror. I highly prefer QT as a filmmaker to Rodriguez but Death Proof is pretty damn tedious for most of the run time. Most of the characters are annoying as fuck and painful to watch (fuckin' Zoe Bell) and the dialogue for the most part is pure ear rape. Even QT doesn't like the movie. There's definitely quite a bit of greatness in it but Planet Terror is much more entertaining. It's a goofy weird fast paced b-movie and never pretends to be otherwise. I guess it comes down to what you prefer but I still don't get it. Even with that calling Planet Terror garbage is a pretty stupid thing t0 say. It's like calling an extra cheesy pizza too cheesy. That's what is. Either accept it or STFU.
I don't like Planet Terror. In fact, I dislike pretty much everything Rodriquez has ever made to some extent. I do like Death Proof but won't defend it. You either like it or don't.
Understandable. If I got fired from being a background stripper in From Dusk Till Dawn I'd be pissed too.
I don't remember The Faculty, but... other than that, I have nothing bad to say about Rodriguez. Even Spy Kids could have been worse.
Agreed. (From Dusk Till Dawn proves that, single-handedly.) But, there was no CGI in El Mariachi or his Four Rooms' segment. So... I'm good.
A good buddy of mine is nothing short of obsessed with Grindhouse. He saw both films including the fake trailers in the theaters 6 times. SIX times for a 4+ hour theater trip. Kinda insane..... but Death Proof is one of our most debated flicks. He think it's a master piece and I couldn't disagree more. I found it dull and a massive chore to get threw. I'm a huge Jordan Ladd fan and the crash scene is fucking breath taking....... but aside from that one scene, I really can't get into it. Planet Terror on the other hand, is one we both agree on all day. Movie fucking rocks.
El Mariachi was made for something like $5,000 reportedly, so small wonder. The fact that he hasn't made anything like that in 25 years says a lot. I couldn't make it through Four Rooms at all. It was just a mess all around.
I was the opposite. I really enjoyed Planet Terror but didn't care for Death Proof. Unfortunate as Kurt Russell is one of my favorite actors.
I've had to finally wake up to the fact that Rodriguez just isn't very good. I agree Planet Terror was better than Death Proof, but even still there's a lot of even modern zombie movies I'd watch over Planet Terror. It can't even compete in its own weight class, none the less the entire division. (I will say this about Death Proof, the live stunts at the was cool. Probably my favorite thing in Grindhouse. I wish he had a better film to put them in.) Lot of my friends are fans so I've had to sit through my fair share of his resume, but his films are pretty much an outright mess. He writes, directs, DP's and supervises CGI on all his films and one can tell because it's all sub-par. There's nuggets of brilliance in there, the music (which he does too) usually is stand out, but overall there's just not a lot of replay value. Once was enough and lately I've questioned if seeing it the once is all that necessary these days.
I love Death Proof. I love it so much I prefer the Extended version. I love the dialogue, the slow character build to total fucking carnage, and then that chase scene is glorious. I love all of it! Planet Terror is also a treasure, but totally agree with X-human on the overall assessment of Rodriguez's catalog.
Aside from Rita Hayworth, Gilda is a disappointing film with a terribly thin plot where three characters do shitty things to each other because they are shitty.
I'd be on the same page as you if the characters were worth watching. But for me they were unlikable pieces of shit not worth investing in and took too long to be killed. Trust me I adore QT's collection of excellent characters but these are the absolute worst he has put down on paper.
Disagreed on El Mariachi, his segment in Four Rooms (which is excellent), and most of the first half of From Dusk Till Dawn. The second half, however...
