Judging by the screenshots it was shot open-matte as you can clearly see a boom mic in the second-last screenshot in the 10k Bullets review... And if you look at the third screenshot of the couple on the snow covered hill there's a lot of head room there, so this transfer should probably have been cropped to 1.85:1 instead of presented open matte as my guess it was intended for theatrical but might have never actually gotten a theatrical run and was just dumped to video back in its day. That seems to be an oversight by Olive/Slasher // Video if you ask me...

I'm glad you mentioned that. I might make it 1:85 for my first viewing.

The 10kbullets review states this has a 1.35:1 aspect ratio, but those caps seem to present in a 1.185:1 ratio (1280 wide x 1080 high).

He explains in the extras that all of the theatrical release companies that he approached all passed in the film. So then the next option was to release it directly to home video which back then widescreen was not standard.

The film still looks like a shoddy interest, which it has always been, but the transfer is beautiful and will make evaluating it more fair. So many films you miss the full effect of a particular scene because of the video quality. Well the atmosphere appears present in those screenshots, so I expect to by swayed one way more.

The 1.35:1 aspect ratio on a 1.85:1 screen = black borders on both sides.

Which means this should've been matted to 1.85:1 for the Blu-ray. Olive dropped the ball on this, tbh. I'm glad everything else turned out great, though.

Didn't Slasher Video is the one who did everything on it, and just gave Olive their finished HD Master and extra?

I believe Slasher // Video handled the transfer / aspect ratio, so that would be on them.

You should be able to simply press ZOOM on your TV remote and it will automatically crop it to 1.78:1 without losing information on the sides. At least mine does. Easy fix. Considering how gorgeous those screencaps look, I can live with that.

Might be a problem for the casual viewer who doesn't realize though.

I am actually referring to the framing between the pillarboxing bars, but I think I can see where my original post might be confusing. :)

After cropping out the pillarboxing bars, the film seems to be framed to 1.185:1 or 1.19:1 (1280 pixels wide x 1080 pixels high), not 1.35:1 as indicated in the review.

The full screencap with pillarboxing (1920 pixels wide x 1080 pixels high) has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1.

I have own more than a dozen DVD/BD players and never seen a "zoom" option but see it mentioned all of the time.

Some remotes have "Pic Mode" which changed the ratio too. Yours may have that.

It'd be your TV/TV remote that would have the zoom option if it has one, not the DVD/Blu-ray player.

Most BD players have a zoom option.
Sometimes the button has a symbol of an magnifying glass :)

This is one that I will use the zoom option for. I just don´t understand why they didn´t crop the picture. I hate when boom mics are visible, even though it sometimes can add some hilarious moments to a dull scene :D

I like the fact that its in a full screen ratio. I can zoom it up to theatre screen style, or I can watch it in the way that most of us saw it back in the day: full frame open matte mom and pop video store vhsey goodness!!

Got my copy. The framing is definitely more in the 1.19:1 range than the 1.35:1 listed on the cover. I'd have to guess that it's been opened up both vertically and horizontally, though I don't have a VHS copy or rip to compare to. Boom mics appear from time to time and the extreme edges and corners of the picture frame are frequently visible throughout the duration of the film. Framing in the 1.66:1 to 1.85:1 range would have been optimal, IMO.

Framing aside, the transfer is quite nice, though I could see where it may be a bit too raw for some tastes. I have no doubt that this will look better than any standard def sources that currently circulate.

No reversible artwork for this. The Satan's Blade 2 Fan trailer is also MIA, but after watching it on YouTube, it's probably just as well.

Mine just landed on my doorstep. Haven't seen any pics of the back of the case online yet, so here it is if anyone's interested.
