This was just brought to my attention. http://www.fangoria.com/new/rest-in-peace-jesus-jess-franco-1930-2013/ Another one of the genre greats has passed on. (and maybe I should have posted this in the Euro horror section, but well....)
Sad news. Jess Franco was one of the Greats! From Great Horror and Sleaze Classics, he was a fine Director who was often overlooked. I'm proud to say that many of the Movies in Collection are from Franco! He had a style all his own, and watching one of Franco's Films was always an experience. RIP Jess Franco, you will be missed.
Very saddened to wake up to this news this morning. Jesús Franco Manera is, and will always be, my favourite filmmaker. A huge loss to cinema, Franco was an auteur unlike any other, an outsider who lived and breathed filmmaking and would not compromise his commitment to the camera no matter if he had a budget or not. If there is an afterlife of some kind, I hope he's still making movies and is reunited with Soledad and Lina and Howard and everyone else he captured with his lens. RIP Jesús Franco Manera.
How much time do you got, buddy? I have a ton of his movies, but the only one I've seen that is revered at all is Virgin Among the Living Dead, which I enjoyed. I really need to watch my DVDs of Vampyros Lesbos. I've seen more of his stinkers, unfortunately. Not enough hours in the day!
R.I.P. I personally own just three of his films, but there's a ton of his films that I still have yet to see.
He has a lot of stinkers, but even in those you kind find some value. Other than the ones already mentioned Venus in Furs, Diabolical Dr. Z, Succubus, Eugenie... the Story of Her Journey Into Perversion, Eugenie de Sade, Lorna, Female Vampire, Erotic Rites of Frankentsein, and Bloody Moon are some of my Franco favs. There are a bunch others I enjoy, but these are the ones that get the most rotation in my players.
Most well known would be Oasis of the Zombies, Bloody Moon, Devil Hunter, Faceless, Jack the Ripper and Virgin Among the Living Dead.
Here's a somewhat complete list of his horror (and horror-related) films since a lot of his films were re-titled and re-edited in various forms and countries: The Awful Dr. Orlof Blind Target The Blood of Fu Manchu The Bloody Judge Bloody Moon Bram Stoker's Count Dracula Broken Dolls Cannibals The Castle of Fu Manchi The Corpse Packs His Bags Countess Perverse Daughter of Dracula (Dracula's Daughter) The Devil Came from Akasava Devil Hunter Diabolical Dr. Z Diamonds of Kilimandjaro Dr. Orlof's Monster Dr. Wong Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein (Dracula vs. Frankenstein) The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein Exorcism Faceless Female Vampire Helter Skelter (2000) Incubus Jack the Ripper Killer Barbys Killer Barbys vs. Dracula Kiss Me Monster Lust for Frankenstein Lorna the Exorcist Macumba sexual The Manhunter Mansion of the Living Dead Mari-Cookie and the Killer Tarantula Night of the Skull Nightmares Come at Night Oasis of the Zombies Red Silk Revenge in the House of Usher The Sadistic Baron Von Klaus Sex Charade Sexy Sisters The Sexual Story of O She Killed in Ecstasy The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orlof Snakewoman The Story of Linda Succubus Vampire Blues Vampire Junction Vampyros Lesbos A Virgin Among the Living Dead Voodoo Passion X-312 Flight to Hell
I don’t know why people rag on Oasis of the Zombies…I watched the BD a couple of weeks back and really enjoyed it. Sure the acting is terrible, the over dub is hilarious, the lighting is questionable, but there are some fine European women in that flick. It also seems Franco was in an “ass phase” when shooting Oasis because there are some choice shots of a couple of nice derrieres. Or maybe Oasis just felt like a great film because prior to that I just had finished watching The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff. Eeeesh…definitely not the best film in the Orloff saga.
Thought of MorallySound when I heard the news. Was a true titan of world horror. Will be missed, he brought a craziness to cinema that's long since been missing. I always liked his VENUS IN FURS. Rest in peace you little pervert!!!
I've enjoyed most of the Franco films I have seen. As for those I did not like, none were easily forgotten. Currently I own around two dozen Franco dvds, mostly from his horror films. Vampyros Lesbos, A Virgin Among the Living Dead, Venus in Furs, Ilsa the Wicked Warden, and Female Vampire are probably my favorites. Rest in peace.
Terrible news!! I wanted to meet him so bad, but sadly now i never will. I remember many, many years ago, a friend asked if I liked Franco movies and I replied "no". his response was. "dont worry, you will". He was right. Once you discover the wild world of Jess Franco, it's easy to become obsessed. I currently own more than 40 movies on DVD, and tonight I'll break one or 2 out in tribute. RIP Jess Franco.
Sad that another great director has passed on. His movies were great and I own many of them. He will be missed.
