Parts 1, 3, and 4 will be on Amazon HD for $9.99 a whack on 10/4. May splurge for Part 1 considering I'm saving around $50 or so by skipping it tonight.

Spend the $10 (or $30) on Amazon HD before watching it on SyFy. Yuck.

I have no excuse for missing the film here in San Francisco at the Alamo Drafthouse. We're having a mini heatwave, it's beautiful out...but I got so caught up in stupid chores, there's no way I can make it over in 33 minutes. My fault, though.

    So who all went?

I saw it, and it was a good time. Since the theater was so small, it was completely full, with even a few chairs from the lobby brought in to accommodate some more people. It looked fantastic, not overly digital or anything. Definitely looking forward to the upcoming Blu. Also, this micro-theater will be showing Ravager in a few weeks. It does look a bit cheesy in spots, but so what. The cheese is the best part of Phantasm. "We're hot as love, baby" and "There's nobody driving that mother!".

I've seen Phantasm many times and it's never played better than in a theater full of horror fans. The new remaster is beautiful and the rumors of CGI tinkering have been greatly exaggerated. Every time the ball showed up I was looking for anything that stood out and I saw nothing. I know the comparison pics are out there, but in motion it all fits in perfectly. This is a situation like the Evil Dead 2 Blu-ray where wires were removed, but the film was not adversely affected.

That was Saturday night? Dammit...I so wanted to go! I need to pay closer attention to dates for these things; the SF Drafthouse is just a short BART ride under the Bay for me.

Keep an eye on the website https://drafthouse.com/sf/calendar/new-mission as they have some fun horror movies in October.

Well, I thought there'd be more extras for Phantasm....

Pretty sure the dvd had more supplements but maybe they're saving stuff for the collection?

I'm pretty sure Diabolik DVD is the original source of this information. They also have additional specs that weren't posted at phantasmarchives. These will be BD-25's, unfortunately.

Since no one's doing a separate thread for the remaster of the original film... I wonder if Amazon.com is the only site where apparently both the DVD and Blu-Ray are currently out-of-stock...

I believe the Anchor Bay "transfer" is just the 1999 MGM transfer made anamorphic.

    Cheapskate Anchor Bay!!!

Actually, the AB US transfer is marginally better than MGM's:

And the Mono is included! Although lossy.

So, this is the one film from that old "Anchor Bay Collection" Anchor Bay actually worked on? I have a lot of trouble believing that after I noticed no difference between their 1999 Tenebre and Phenomena discs and their 2008 re-releases. (I also don't believe they did any work on Hellraiser, Evil Dead, or Re-Animator when they re-released those films (from the THX 2000, 2002, and Elite Millennium Edition's) either.)

And all of this should only make the Blu-Ray people on this board very happy. I finally agree that there are significant areas where DVD's work needs/needed improvement. (Though, not so much on Hellraiser and Evil Dead. At least until I rewatch the former. But, that Re-Animator 2-disc is a bit too soft.) I have a lot of Anchor Bay DVD's like most anyone else and, I really think they do fantastic work on stuff like Society and The Stuff. I've looked at those discs very recently and my eyes were so pleased at what I was looking at. But... yeah, 5-7 years after these discs, they can't make Phantasm look good (I really did think it looks quite shabby)? How does that work? I also think they did pretty darn good to great transfers of The Initiation, Dawn of the Dead, Manhattan Baby, The Vineyard, House, Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2, The Pit, Halloween, the Halloween sequels, etc- most of the transfers where I believe they were the first DVD company to work on the films for DVD (except Sleepaway Camp- eeee GAD! what went wrong there). (And Spontaneous Combustion lacked sharpness.) (And, if I remember correctly, Creepshow 2. Ehhhh, not great.) For being so early in DVD's history and all.

Anyway: so, of course, I'll get this new disc asap.

I guess they just didn't get enough stock in, or received it late. I received the Phantasm Blu-ray pre-order earlier today from them, but Ravager (shipped earlier today) won't arrive until Thursday.

The Blu-ray Slipcover of Phantasm looks really great, I must say. One of the best I've seen since Arrow's Crimes of Passion.
