Phantasm II is a more action packed film than the original. It's very much an 80's horror sequel.

Coscarelli wanted to structure it more like the original but Universal said nope. I love it almost as much as the original.

It's a the most "studio" of the series by a mile. Less quirky.

If I'm being completely honest, Phantasm 2 is my favorite in the series. The original is spooky and Part 3 is a lot of fun, but the second film has it all. Horror, comedy, action, atmosphere, a HUGE increase in production value. I was always annoyed that they didn't keep James LeGros for the sequels. Michael Baldwin was great as a weird little kid, but as his character sort of became a co-leading man with Bannister's, I just prefer LeGros.

I also prefer Le Gros in the role of older Mike. Baldwin was terrible in 3 but much better in that role in Oblivion.

3 on the other hand is easily my least favorite of the series. I find the comedic aspects of it more annoying than amusing. Hate those three stooges like zombies and the unnecessary sidekicks Reggie has.

    Hate that fucking kid.

Oblivion has gotten better with age though. I love how it feels similar to the original film and how it uses deleted footage from the original to tell its story. Also the stuff with Scrimm as Jeb Morningside is great. I remember disliking it when I first saw it but I think it was a huge step up from 3. Coscarelli clearly didn't have a decent budget and used it to benefit the story.

and like I said before I just want Ravager to have a decent story that ends this franchise with dignity.

The original is my favorite, and II is fine. I really like IV, just because it was so earnest. III is the only one where I lose patience fast.

Part 3 is one of my favorites as I orinally taped it off tv for my first time viewing. Plus when I had just started getting into horror I'm pretty sure the trailer for that one played at the beggining of the NOES2 vhs I rented for myself and some friends to celebrate my birthday. It looked really spooky and ominous and had us all very curious to check it out. Good memories.

It's kind of an Alien/Aliens situation, Matt. Everything is bigger and faster in Phantasm II. It lacks the quirkiness of the original and it's pretty much devoid of scares. That said, I find it hugely entertaining--and much more polished than any other film in the series. It looks and plays much more like a studio film, and the acting is a lot less amateurish (outside of the returning players). But it's a totally different animal. Where the original is mostly a straight horror movie, II is an action/horror/comedy hybrid. I wouldn't go so far as to compare the tone to Army of Darkness, but it definitely skews in that direction. It features the over-the-top action scenes you'd expect from the 80s, and Mike and Reggie have a buddy cop movie-type relationship. The exaggerated action movie violence was clearly a huge influence on the old Monolith Build engine shooter game, Blood (one of my all-time favorites). Several of the movie settings appear in the game.

You can also sense the long arm of the franchise mentality at work in II. Freddy and Jason were raking in the bucks, and Michael Myers was returning after a long absence. The Tall Man became a slightly more chatty, campy version of himself--undoubtedly in the hope that he could launch a more mainstream franchise.

As long as you're expecting a sillier, action-fueled ride set in the Phantasm universe, I think you'd enjoy II. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, avoid it. In terms of tone, it's very different from the original.

Universal owns the rights to Part 2 and they are apparently distributing the set with Well Go USA making it highly likely that part 2 will be included.

Isn't it about time to release a new trailer for the movie?

Figured there would one available by now......according to the Alamo Draft House calendar, they're premiering Phantasm Ravager on October 7th as part of a double feature with the original Phantasm (remastered). Then they're showing Ravager on Oct 16th, 17th, and 19th. Not sure if it's getting a wider theatrical release or is this a direct VOD? But I'm going to try and make it to the Alamo on the 7th, because that sounds too cool to miss.

Not interested in the box set? That's what I'm waiting to hear about. Would be great if they released some details about it soon. I feel like there should have been some proper announcement and specs by now unless the set isn't coming this year after all.
