Olive is releasing The Last American Virgin on blu-ray on May 26th.

And yes, we know, "there's a superior edition from Arrow", "go region free", "this is a worthless release, they should release stuff that isn't already on blu-ray", yada yada, etc, stfu.

Apparently Olive and Kino aren't allowed to do double-features of the MGM films (yet it's totally okay for Shout, for some reason). I kind of wish they would though, because a lot of the MGM films Olive is releasing don't really stand well on their own.

For instance, I recently picked up their release of 1969. It's really a pretty blah movie, and the only extra is a trailer. They should have paired it with something like Heart Of Dixie. Neither movie is great, but putting them together would give you more bang for your buck. And 1969 is on a single-layer disc, so you wouldn't be losing anything. I really can't recommend it for $20.

There are several others I wouldn't mind picking up, but aren't really worth $20 on their own. I do have Ski School, Satan's Blade, and Bio-Dome pre-ordered, and I'm sure Last American Virgin won't be far behind. But even Bio-Dome, I'm thinking: am I really paying that much for that?

Why not? Olive released the Dirty Dozen Blu-ray double feature last month, and it was MGM licensed for both films.

Not sure. Usually when the topic comes up, Scorpion swoops in to explain that MGM doesn't allow their licensees to do double features (like the F/X films, for instance).

Blu-ray.com is reporting 4 Blaxploitation titles coming from Olive Films on 6/9/15. They are separate releases. Diabolik already has them up for pre-order:

    Coffy
    Foxy Brown
    Friday Foster
    Hammer

Never seen any of those, but I never realized that Jack Hill directed Coffy and Foxy Brown, or that Arthur Marks directed Friday Foster. That alone makes these instant blind-buys. Really looking forward to them.

In other Olive related news, I just received my blu-ray of Bio-Dome in the mail...

    seen this online
From Olive Films, regarding their release of TICKS:

    "TICKS DVD and BluRay Moratorium

Effective today, March 23, 2015, TICKS (OF513 DVD & OF514 BluRay) is being placed on moratorium. There are no immediate plans to rerelease the title so it may be to our customers' advantage to keep their current inventory."

Ticks was a day one buy for me. Shame for those who missed it, or those who have never seen it and won't be able to pick it up down the line. Fortunately, I have all of Olive's Paramount / Repubilc releases that I want. Even though I already own Ticks, it does make me a little nervous when these go OOP, thinking "what if something happens to mine?".

As for their MGM releases, I gave Night Game a spin last night, and this was another one that would have greatly benefited from being paired with a similar MGM title or having a lower SRP. The movie is simply not good enough to stand on it's own with such a high price tag. It's a pretty mediocre cop movie, to be honest.

First off, the baseball element prominently displayed on the cover is actually a huge spoiler, since the connection isn't made until the last 20 minutes. The entire plot is even spoiled on the back of the case. The killer's face is shown early on, during the second kill scene, although he isn't assigned a name until the very end when his identity is "revealed". There's absolutely no mystery, because the killer's name and motive come out of nowhere. There are no clues or buildup, they just say "oh, by the way, the killer's name is ----- and his motive is -----". Although I did get a chuckle when Scheider finally confronts the killer and flubs his name. By the way, are we supposed to like Scheider's character? He was a bumbling mess.

Definitely not worth a blind buy. I'm glad I only paid $12.

I just wonder why "Ticks" of all titles is out of print. Did the licensing just run out? Any other Olive releases OOP or potentially going that way?
