This bit of news really made my day. Kevin Greutert, director of last years box office failure known as Saw VI, has just been announced as director of the sequel to last years box office success Paranormal Activity. I really feel Kevin was the best director attached to the Saw franchise and I can't wait to see what he does with PA2. It's gonna be one interesting Halloween season.

here's the official announcement from heatvisionblog.com:

Something’s moving in the “Paranormal Activity 2” house.

Paramount has hired screenwriter Michael R. Perry and director Kevin Greutert to create the sequel to 2009’s biggest surprise hit, “Paranormal Activity,” which scared up $151 million in worldwide grosses in the fall on a shoestring $15,000 budget and a shrewd, opt-in Web marketing campaign.

Significantly, Paramount will unleash it in theaters on the pre-Halloween weekend of October 22, which sets it against that date’s reigning champion in previous years, the next installment in Lionsgate’s “Saw” series (this year would be “VII”). In a symbolic twist, Greutert made his directorial debut on the sixth “Saw” film, which grossed just $31 million worldwide, with observers thinking that the franchise may be bleeding dry.

Jason Blum and Oren Peli, who masterminded the first “Activity,” are producing the second iteration. Steven Schneider will serve as executive producer.

“These guys get it, and the fans won’t be disappointed,” said Peli of Perry and Greutert’s participation.

Unsurprisingly, the filmmakers are keeping the story line — as well as the film’s actual title — hidden in the attic."

A Saw director doing a sequel to a film that doesn't need a sequel? I'll stick to Peli's next film, Area 51.

Heh, I wonder how they justify this. Does a new couple move into the same house? Or does the video camera get sold off to some pawn shop, only for the new owner to discover it is haunted? If that would be the case, I'd hope the store would be Curious Goods. :)

But wasn't the problem in Paranormal Activity not the house but the woman? She said it had followed her from childhood and just got worse and worse. I mean....what could they possibly do with this? SOME MOVIES DO NOT NEED SEQUELS. Jesus.

In Paranormal Activity didn't the Demon jump from that girl in the 60's into her. I guess it will just jump to someone else.

i haven't seen the original, but its more than likely that it may just be an unrelated haunted house picture told in more or less the same style, isn't it? that would probably be the easiest way.

If they go the route of the original ending (not the theatrical) with the cops showing up, they could make it a women in prison flick! That's the only way I'd see the sequel, and if Pam Grier was in it.

    This.

Maybe the tagline for the sequel can be; 'This time, they actually try to fix their situation.'

The Saw films were equally rushed. I don't support this, but then- I didn't support any of the originals to these series either.

Like Paranormal Activity wasn't torture enough on the audience?

Looks like this whole PA2 vs. Saw VII has taken another turn. Here's the latest from deadline.com:

Just read over at Dread Central that Greutert is back on as the director of Saw VII. Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures exercised an option on his contract, forcing him back into the director's chair. He'll now have to walk away from Paranormal Activity 2 to focus on this film. I think this is a terrible underhanded move by Lionsgate to try and throw wrenches at Paranormal 2 instead of actually trying to make Saw VII a good movie and win this "horror war" that way.

It was also pretty underhanded for Paramount to hire the director of Saw VI to do Paranormal 2 and then plan on releasing their film the same day as Saw VII. Both studios are handling this situation badly. It's unfortunate that Greutert and Hackl have to be stuck in the middle of this mess.

Not as much as Lionsgate is. There was probably a sequel clause in Greutert's contract, he probably didn't read it properly. But his anger at Lionsgate is justified.

I'm surprised we aren't seeing Hackl's reaction to the news. Pretty douchey of Lionsgate to remove Hackl from Saw VII and legally forcing Greutert to direct it instead.
