Am I the only one who thinks Fulci's stuff (about 95% of it, anyway) is horribly overrated? I mean sure he has an eye for cinematography and his movies are beautifully-filmed, but the guy CANNOT TELL A STORY. His plots are so incoherent it drives me insane. (And I know it wasn't intentional...his movies aren't art films.) ~Matt
I think you have to keep in mind this stuff was quickly and cheaply written. It wasn't necessarily meant to make sense, but as a vehicle for gore etc. Also, scripts translated from Italian to English (lots were written by Dardano Sacchetti) probably adds another layer to the incoherency. Stuff lost in translation etc.
Exactly, hence the reason his films are so overrated. People refer to a number of his films being masterpieces, when really they're full of plotholes and are at times very incoherent. I don't even think it's a sense of ambiguity, his movies just plain don't make sense a lot of the time. I'm not saying I hate his films, I just think they're extremely overrated. Hmmm...I don't think the issue lies in the translation of his films. They were poorly written to begin with. (Like you stated.) Reason being filmmakers like Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Ingmar Bergman...most of their films were written in their native languages (Italian, French and Swedish, respectively) and there was nothing lost in translation. (Or hardly anything, for that matter.) Fulci's movies are simply poorly written and quite poorly executed. (Aside from his bautiful cinematography. I'll give him credit for that.) ~Matt
Yeah, I totally agree with you - but I'm just thinking of quickly made genre films. For instance, Lamberto Bava's Blade in the Dark had so many baffling mistranslations of idioms and so-forth. A line like "I bet you're great in the feathers..." comes to mind. You know? Anywho, I think the script and story to "Don't Torture a Duckling" is fucking great...so I'm just going to shut up now.
Yup, it all comes down to laziness. However, I've never seen Don't Torture a Duckling, so I can't exactly comment on that one. ~Matt
You know, I love Grindhouse, I really do...but they've been teasing us with this title for so many years now that my response is yeah, right when it used to be ALLRIGHT! I'll definitely be buying it whenever they get around to releasing it but they've worn me out for too long to remain excited.
Hope this means we get a release date in the coming days, and that it's not another tease. Love this movie!!
They've been cranking them out pretty consistently since An American Hippie In Israel last September. Since then, we've had Corruption, The Big Gundown, The Swimmer, and Cannibal Holocaust. So it could be legit this time, as they seem to have figured out the blu-ray thing. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of Pieces, I'd much rather they tackled I Drink Your Blood. Still, I only have Pieces on a cheap public domain release, so I'll definitely pick up this 4K transfer and give it another go.
They just posted that screencap so I'm guessing it will be their next release, probably for October going by the average 3 month gap between releases. I don't know why anyone would think it's just another tease for a release without a forseeable street date - Grindhouse is up and running. Those dark days of nothing happening for years are over.
I really hope that one is coming soon. Didn´t they mention that they were going to re-release the entire library on BD? Really looking forward to Cannibal Ferox, since none of the DVD´s out there was all that great to begin with. Even the Grindhouse Releasing disc that was non-anamorphic, as it was just a port of the LD transfer, which hasn´t aged well at all.
It'll go down eventually. Unfortunately Amazon no longer gives the automatic 30% discount off SRP on pre-orders anymore like they used to, but most pre-orders usually go way down in price before the actual release date. I would guess this will eventually be about $23 or less, at least from retailers like Deep Discount.
