They've released a lot of very solid Blu-ray transfers in the past... at least for the films that Fred directed.

On DeepDiscount, you can order JAWS OF DEATH from Retromedia on DVD. This release is so out-of-left-field...has anyone gotten it?
I want to see it but I'm waiting for reviews on the internet but there's nada.

I got it, but haven't watched it yet. You're right, pretty under-the-radar DVD release.

I like the movie. I enjoy all of William Grefe’s films. (Sting of Death, Death Curse of Tartu). They all capture the charm of a Florida that is now rapidly disappearing. Can’t say anything about Retromedia’s release though.

Snowbeast is on my radar, but I will wait for the reviews. I was disappointed with the compression artefacts on the Octaman Blu-ray, and I am not convinced that this was the best the movie could look.

I watched Snowbeast on Prime maybe a year or so ago and wasn't into it. But glad it's hitting disc for the fans.

^^ I received Snowbeast today from Amazon, but haven't yet had a chance to check it out.

It should be great to finally see the film in a version that doesn't look like a damn VHS tape though. I plan on watching the baby tonight! :)

I ordered this too, but it won't arrive until Monday. Not expecting much, but hopefully this is a quality presentation of the film. I used to have an old DVD of Snowbeast on a multipack release. Seemed like a cool movie. It was just garbage quality in terms of audio & video.

    Well bad news... sort of.

The Blu-ray has 2 different versions of the film on the disc. The "CBS LATE MOVIE" version (73 minutes) is presented in full 1080p, takes up 13.5gb on the disc, and only offers lossy Dolby audio (192kbps)

The longer "International Syndicated Version" (88 minutes) on Blu-ray is only presented as 720p (not 1080p) and also just offers lossy Dolby audio (192 kbps). It only takes up 7.9gb on the disc.

I suppose perhaps the reason why the longer version is only presented in 720p is that certain scenes appear to be taken from a video source and upconverted.

The "CBS" TV version on the disc is presented in 1.66:1 widescreen. Although this is mostly considered a TV movie, I think it did play in limited theaters...but I'm unsure what the original aspect ratio ever was. The longer "International" version on the disc is presented in a 1.33:1 ratio.

I guess the good news is that the movie looks better now than it has on any previous home video format, but I still wouldn't say the 1080p transfer is exactly stunning or anything. And both encodes are MPEG-4 AVC at least.

The only bonus feature on the disc is an Audio Commentary with Fred Olen Ray and David DeCoteau. I haven't listened to it yet, but their commentaries are usually a lot of fun.

There are also some liner notes on the reverse cover.

The Blu-ray's back cover lists the film as "B&W" in the disc specs. o_O

Yeah, while it's good to know, this still at least eliminates someone asking which cut is it. I am less critical of something like this as it was a TV movie. I'd file this under a better release than I'd expect for what it is. I'll be pretty happy with it. I don't think this will get a rerelease any time soon.

Kind of disappointing news, but I wasn't expecting much. I am enough of a Sasquatch collector to be satisfied with this. Any upgrade is welcome.

True, and it is still the best it's ever looked. It's unfortunate that only the shorter truncated version is in full HD, but the 720p version still looks quite good...except when the reinserted scenes appear the quality goes down to varying degrees. I guess it's the best that could be located, and at least they did re-edit it all together using the HD elements.

The audio commentary was great though, and well worth listening in on. Fred & Dave keep it interesting throughout, even though neither actually had anything to do with the original film. And Fred even states near the end that this is probably the best it will ever look and another release (if ever) will be a long time away.

Sucks but the movie is z grade tv horror. I watched it youtube and it's 100% kitten approved. I'm sure it's definitely worth the blu ray upgrade despite it's flaws.
