2009 was a relatively quiet year, but we still saw some pretty major releases in the horror world. Since trying to give you options from all the discs released this year would be nuts, I'll just put my top ten list (full article here) and you can pick out your favorite. Use this thread to talk about which one you actually liked most, even if it wasn't on my list. Here's to 2010!
First! The My Bloody Valentine dvd was not only great but something we have waited for for what seems like forever. I t has to take the #1 spot for me. I also loved the Friday the 13th reissues, but would have really loved to see the missing gore from parts 2 and 5. Night of the Creeps was also classic, and you have to put Trick R Treat on there since it only came out on disc.
Hardware, easy. Sure, we got NotC finally, but most of us had already seen the crystal-clear MonstersHD print. Repulsion finally got a quality R1 release, but anyone that's a fan of the film already imported the Anchor Bay R2. And while it's always great to finally get a film uncut, I'm not a huge fan of MBV, so it didn't have a huge effect on me. Severin's Hardware release though was an absolute revelation. You can finally see what goes on in the apartment now, you can see how incredible the compositions and lighting are, you can see the oppressive radiation wastes of the deserts; without question the most important cult release all year. Although a close second runner up would be the Tromasterpiece Combat Shock release, which gives the film, one that's nothing short of a masterpiece, the royal treatment it rightfully deserves. I think The Hanging Woman deserves a special mention too, as Troma really pulled out all the stops for it and served up a package that I don't think many expected to be so complete. Plus, it's like $10!
Hmm, I went with Night of the Creeps, because that's the only one of these that I bought/saw. It wasn't my favorite DVD of the year, but it was ok.
Tough choice between Hardware and Night of the Creeps Blu-rays. So I flipped a coin and Hardware got it. :eek1:
Night of the Creeps is my favorite. Also very happy with Stepfather 2 and My Bloody Valentine. Haven't gotten the William Castle Collection yet.
Night of the Creeps for me. To me just getting the uncut Bloody Valentine wasn't enough to make it #1, it needed some decent bonus features as well.
Of the ones listed MBV definitely. It was great to see the film with the added gore scenes. For second I would probably have to agree with KamuiX and go with Combat Shock. Amazing DVD for an amazing film, EVERYONE who hasn't seen it needs to!..NOW!
Night of the Creeps wins out for me, Hardware is a close second. Never understood the ravings about MBV.
My Bloody Valentine and Silent Scream are virtually neck and neck...but I went with MBV because of blu ray availability.
my 3 favorite discs 0f 2009 are in order 1.Night of the Creeps blu-ray and dvd both which i own 2.My Bloody Valentine uncut dvd and blu-ray 3.the Stepfather dvd i think the first film should be on the list alongside part 2
In the poll it was hard to choose between Night of the Creeps and Cat in the Brain but ultimately I went with Night of the Creeps because it was BD. A DVD release alone was long overdue and to put it out on both DVD and BD was above and beyond. There is actually a tie between 2 that aren't included in the poll, a tie between The Living Dead and Manchester Morgue and The New York Ripper, both on BD. I thought they both looked pretty good when I got them on DVD years ago but these are incredible!
Repulsion. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter had a good featurette about the making-of, but that commentary made me want to beat the crap out of Barney Cohen. Even more than I already did.
