There's simply no valid excuses left that hold any water.

People will either upgrade eventually and finally face the future, or keep buying old CRT TV's at garage sales...and then keep complaining that nothing good is coming out in SD.

Not me. I download all the scripts from my favorite films and hire actors to reenact the scenes in my homemade theatre--the way the good lord intended! I've invested all this money on my playhouse and I won't have any movie "studio" force me into buying a flatscreen TV!

    :D

Let´s all go back to watching movies on a 14 inch B&W TV instead.
I won´t tolerate being forced to watch TV and movies in color!!

The Beaver comparison is like an advertising campaign for the Criterion Blu since they compared it to the worst looking Blu of the movie out there. They should have compared it to the German Subkultur Blu which has been the best one so far.

What the hell, the Criterion looks dull and washed out compared to my MGM HDTV rip and the UK disc.

    Just compare these two shots:

    Second Sight

    Criterion
    http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-...blu-ray_/large/large_scanners_05_blu-ray_.jpg

Scanners have always been a very colorful movie (glorious reds) on all formats up until this latest Criterion disc.
Has Cronenberg gone blind, or is he just doing this because he don´t like his earlier stuff anymore?

Sticking with the UK disc. It also has the original cover art, compared to the new horrible Garbage Pail cover ;)
Why can´t Criterion just use the original cover art? At least as a reversal.

Agreed on all points although at this point in time, every newer player that I've seen only has an HDMI output. This may or may not be the case with some budget players.

Wow, I really hope Beaver screwed up the screen captures here. Criterion's looks far too desaturated, like there's a grey layer on top. Flesh tones are very flat on the Criterion, I have no idea where Beaver gets off [snicker] saying "but richer, colors. Flesh tones are much more realistic." These people need to go see a doctor. I'm hoping these impressions came from the viewing screen and not these hopefully bad captures.

Even with the Koch it's admittedly a little hot with some over saturation, but the level of Criterion's desaturation is far more extreme than even Koch's color boosting. (Not to defend Koch, it's clearly terrible in almost every way.)

Eesh...both those BD's in the Beaver review look like garbage...what's the consensus on the Second Sight Steelbook? I have it, but haven't watched it yet.

Wondering if I should cancel my preorder on the Criterion.

Wow, those Criterion screen shots are uncharacteristically poor. Does anyone have a link that compares Second Sight's transfer?

Thanks. I think I'll stick with my SS steelbook. I'm just amazed at how badly Criterion seems to have fucked this up.

Wow I'm shocked. It's not really Criterion though. If that's how David Cronenberg wants Scanners to look then that's how he wants it to look. That being said I think it's an inferior-looking transfer. That German one is just gorgeous.

I want the Criterion for "Stereo". And with the Barnes & Noble sale coming up....decisions, decisions...

After 30 years, I doubt even the directors remember what the movies originally looked like, and they just try to tweak it to look more "modern". It's not the first time a director's approved transfer looks like shit, thanks to a totally different color scheme.

THIS is the reason why I never pre-order stuff, unless it's a label like Synapse, that always keeps us up to date on the transfers.
Get the Second Sight Steelbook. The transfer is amazing on that one.

Maybe Cronenberg has gotten used to how a lot of modern day films tend to look...with their color filters and desaturation filters? I mean that transfer looks like it has a grey blur over it or something. And definitely some DNR going on (look at the grass). It looks horrible...I have no idea how anyone would find that acceptable.

However, I think I am going to keep my preorder for the Criterion BD. Maybe it will look better in motion?

The SS transfer looks like the colors are boosted a little too much... Personally I think the Subkultur looks the best.

I'm happy with the Second Sight release and the packaging is quite nice. If you're region free, then it's worth mentioning that ordering the Second Sight release from Amazon UK and shipping it to the US actually comes out slightly cheaper than ordering the Criterion release from Amazon.com with free Prime shipping.
