That's lovely. Would be a shame to waste such lovely artwork on a recycled transfer (should that be the case). Any hint as to who is releasing this?

I agree...hopefully they've found a new master to work with but I'm not getting my hopes up. That cover art is sweet.

    I hope it's at least a new transfer/encode.

That coverart is great... so I hope they're not just re-releasing it for the "because we can" dumbness.

On a conincidental note, I actually just watched the film twice in the past week. :eek1:

The German blu was very good, if they use an aged master let's hope for that one.

Awesome new art, plus a steelbook! I'll only buy it though if it has a new transfer or at least something else that makes it worth it.

Since Anchor Bay was involved with the theatrical screening last weekend in Toronto, I'm guessing it might be a Canadian release through Anchor Bay just like the last release on December 2, 2008.

I have the German BD (actually bought 2 copies) and you're right. It is a really nice release and region free to boot. I love that they used the Alamo Drafthouse poster (slightly altered) for that release.

I'm excited, as I just watched the US Blu-Ray (as mentioned in the Christmas viewing thread) and was underwhelmed.

But I'll always hold on to my laserdisc copy, for the cover art alone:

I really hope the next Blu Ray release goes Arrow-esque on the cover art, and makes the original art an option

Is Anchor Bay's Canadian release identical to the US release? Specifically in regards to the 11GB transfer?

I've got the LaserDisc too, Paff. Hard to believe it's been 15 years since it (the LD) was released. I remember that Image Entertainment released it (through Warner Bros.) in 1999 and it was a very limited run. I think only 500 copies were pressed, maybe 1,000. And yes, it's worth keeping for the cover artwork alone. I purchased it on eBay about a year ago for about forty or fifty dollars. Supposedly, the LD was the only time the film was released in the 1.85:1 ratio on home video. Later DVD and BD releases have been 1.78:1. (Not much difference, but still...)

The Collector's Edition DVD released on December 3, 2002 from Critical Mass featured a reversible cover with the original 1974 artwork. Unfortunately, the transfer was 1.66:1 non-anamorphic.

Thanks for the info. I have the Critical Mass Special Edition DVD from 2006, but never bothered upgrading. 11GB for a blu-ray transfer is just pathetic. As much as I love this movie, I'll just wait until they do it right.

The new disc, whatever it turns out to be, probably won't even come out until later next year. Whether it will even be an upgrade is anybody's guess right now.

The current Blu-ray is 6+ years old though, so this was inevitable.

Same here. Though I was actually thinking something like this would happen seeing as it has been in my Amazon wishlist for years. I guess we're to thank for this new release ;) Hopefully it's a nice new transfer, maybe even 4k.

My Black Christmas (1974 and 2006) collection

I wish we could get a US Blu-ray of the 2006 remake with the Unrated cut in 1080p. The Canadian BD is the R rated theatrical cut in 1080i.

Yeah, the 40th anniversary steelbook BD probably won't be released until next December - a whole year from now - I would imagine. I wouldn't expect it until September 2015 at the earliest.
