Today I was saddened to learn that Robert Z'Dar passed at the young age of 64. What better way to salute his memory than have a poll about that special sub-genre of action and horror, the Blank Cop movie? Z'Dar was in close to half the movies himself, being in all three MANIAC COP films, as well as the bad movie favorite, SAMURAI COP. What's your favorite Cop/Horror hybrid?
I'd have to go with RoboCop (1987) as my personal favorite. Maniac Cop 1 & 2, Psycho Cop and Samurai Cop would not be far behind though...
Heh, it's actually a favorite of mine, but even I couldn't find a way to rationalize its inclusion on a horror site. The rest of the picks on there are pretty dark and gory at least.
Learned something new today. Added Psycho Cop Returns and changed your vote for it. Now I need to find that movie to watch!
The Maniac Cop movies wire formative of my horror fandom. I enjoy all three, but the first is the best. Rest in piece, Robert.
Gladiator Cop: The Swordsman II is pretty fucking hilariously bad. Great fun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ebsTze9jN0
WolfCop is a new fave, but man oh man, Samurai Cop was a revelation. Watched it twice this year. What am I doing with my life?
Thanks! And as for watching it, please do! It's a real hoot! It's got strippers, office hijinks, satanism, crazy kills, and the humor is actually a lot smarter than you'd expect from a movie called Psycho Cop II. Way more fun than the boring Maniac Cop series. Just make sure you get ahold of the Unrated Canadian VHS. I believe all the US releases are the extremely edited R-rated version. There's a BIG difference between the two. There used to be a detailed comparison on movie-censorship.com but it looks like they took it down. I managed to score a cheap copy on eBay a couple years ago. The cover looks like this, so you know which VHS to look out for:
I voted for Magic Cop. You probably need to be a fan of Chinese/Hong Kong films for this one but it is an entertaining and well done film.
The original Robocop, easily. Not any real competition there. I do want to see Samurai Cop, and Wolfcop just showed up on Netflix. :glasses:
Pycho Cop 2 is a lot better than the first. It's much more fast paced and fun whereas I find the original slow and boring for the most part. I'd go RoboCop as my first pick but it's a well known classic compared to most of the others so I think I'd go Maniac Cop.
Oh and Wolfcop was a complete letdown for me. Its effects were great but the script and direction for the most part left me unimpressed and bored. Definitely not the cop movie I was hoping for.
I watched Wolfcop on Netflix, and it's a lot of fun. Though definitely rough around the edges, it succeeds at being both funny and bloody. No way I'm changing my vote from the classic Robocop, but I recommend Wolfcop as a bloody, fun, cheesy flick. I would compare it to a really good, early Troma movie like The Toxic Avenger. (I think most Troma is crap.)
