Sounds like they just needed a cut that's the theatrical with the nature stuff trimmed. I remember there being a LOT of those scenes when I checked this out. It was too obvious that it was padding out the runtime. Just make it short and to the point.
I'd never seen this before, and on a whim went for the theatrical cut. Normally I'd opt for the longer or international cut, as they often tend to be more explicit or complete, but the way this was presented in the packaging made me think otherwise. I'm glad I did, because after watching the gypsy flashback stuff, I really think it adds nothing and completely disrupts the momentum of the film. I really enjoyed the theatrical cut. I love the daylight wilderness slasher vibe it has in parts, a lot like Just Before Dawn. Great movie. Lots of fun. The nature stuff didn't bother me at all.
The nature stuff doesn't bother me either. I think it adds to the film. It's shot well. If it was poorly shot padding I may have thought differently.
Totally agree. And not for nothing, they got some pretty sick footage too as far as random nature stuff. Someone had a Bob Ross passion for it - lol.
I think it's shot really well but my memory is that there is a LOT of it. It stuck out in a bad way when I saw it. Might give it another go for October but I'm not expecting to have my mind changed.
Arrow's two-for-one Shocktober sale: https://arrowfilms.com/shop/shocktober-sale-2019/?pi=1&ps=2147483647 Nothing I need this time. On their last sale my package got "lost", so it was almost 3 months before I received the replacement package they sent out, albeit that was with the cheaper International shipping option.
Nah, they don't really have a US shop. Well they sorta do here, but everything just links to Diabolik to purchase.
Zavvi are also having an Arrow Buy-One-Get-One sale again: https://www.zavvi.com/offers/arrow-shop/offer.list
Hills have eyes comparisons with old blu and arrow blu, as expected quite an upstick in detail, a lot clearer, especially in the night scenes: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=13424&d2=13423&c=5260
Wow, that's a substantial difference. Still not sure about upgrading though, it is Hills 2 after all. LOL
Just wanted to say I absolutely adored the Arrow release of THE PREY - I quite enjoyed the weirdness of this movie when catching it on VHS back in the day, but this release just oozes with love, right down to the little park pamphlet that's included inside the case. I'd never seen the international cut either before this so was very happy it was included. It definitely drags with sex scenes that are too long (I never thought I'd write that) and not one, but two, superfluous dance sequences, but I do think had the sequence been cut down that it would have added to the film proper. As it is, the theatrical cut of THE PREY feels incomplete with the random forest fire footage and no real backstory ever given for the killer. Also, the campfire story (normally a highlight for these kinds of movies like in MADMAN, THE BURNING and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II) feels totally undercooked and barely even makes sense since whenever they cut to wide shots or nature footage the dialogue plays at an almost inaudible level. The way it's edited in the International Cut, the campfire story has weight and feels like it belongs, the Inciting Incident from the past that's basically a requisite for slasher films this time rendered as a campfire story. I'd never lose the nature footage or the bullfrog story to a deer, that's the shit that gives this movie charm. I'm just happy both versions are here though for the first time on any digital format, and that the transfer looks so good and there are so many loving extras. Jeez, that Frightmare audience sure was a dud though, weren't they? They weren't reacting to the movie at all. I'll always champion any release of a retro slasher (excited for Vinegar Syndrome's BERSERKER coming out soon) but this is my favorite Bluray release in years.
FYI - if anyone ordered The Prey through Deep Discount there is a shipping delay. Apparently, the entire stock they received was damaged, so they're waiting on replacements from Arrow.
Arrow are shifting a few titles for £5 each, some good stuff on there, not sure how much shipping is for you guys in US, here's the link to titles available: https://arrowfilms.com/shop/halloween-5-offers/?pi=1&ps=24

If they are thinner like the Scared Stiff Slipcover was, I agree. Hopefully they do a standard thicker Slip this time around. Regardless, gotta have it and it's really no more than the Arrow UK one from their site. I've been waiting on this to be released forever...and I seriously doubt 500 will last too long there, so pre-ordered! It should ship earlier than elsewhere at least...
